RIGA, LATVIA city decorations - in 24 hours (all photos at F2.8)
LOCATION: This gallery shows the beautiful Riga, Latvia during New Year's 2024/2025. You will see the ST. Peter's Church, the views of old town and city center of Riga. A prominent part of the video shows the Riga Christmas Market. Toward the end you'll see some of the best art examples from the Latvian National Museum or Art.
TECHNICAL: Most photos were taken in the dark. I used Fuji XF 27mm lens always at F2.8 (wide open) with Fujifilm X-E2 (handheld). All photos were shot as JPEGs using the Standard film simulation. My most common settings at night were DR 400%, Highlight Tone -2, Shadow Tone -2. Sometimes the tone curve was slightly altered in GIMP.

What is your opinion: D700 vs D610 for a non professional hobbyist?
Hi! Thank you for asking. The D610 is a better camera in every aspect. The D700 is even lacking video. I'd say that the D610 is a clear winner. The only reason to prefer the D700 is price. However, this is not to say that the D700 cannot be used to take great photos. Kind regards!
Thanks a lot… i understood how to use this lense before.. but after 1 year i didn’t use it, i forgot how to use it… hahaa .. you save my life
Hi! I'm very glad my video helped you. Kind regards!
i have the 35mm and 23mm, among 10 lenses in total. the 35mm i love and use most. the 23mm is excellent, too, but just a little heavy and large. the 27mm was my first prime lens and back then i couldn't get used to it and eventually sold it. regrettably. thank you for the comparison and great photo examples
Hi Martin! Thank you so much for watching and providing feedback. Kind regards!
Thanks for sharing your point of view! I own a later version of this lens (a black one, very plastiky, not the popular "zebra") and just found your video by searching for some review. I absolutely agree that it´s a fun lens with its own character, maybe even for portraits on FF. This massive loss of contrast (around 5:50) at f 11++ might be caused by the highly reflecting aperture blades (as seen at 2:44), since there seems to be no coating even at the front glass.
Hi! Thank you very much for your feedback. Yes, I agree with you about the contrast. Kind regards!
What LUT are you Using ?
Hi! Thanks for asking. For some parts of the video I believe I used something called "Street Car". When I show camera I tend to use Pro Neg Std film simulation. Kind regards!
Hello! Do you recommend this one or the X-T20? Trying to buy my first camera here, and I'm confused with too many Fujifilm models, I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, which of both cameras do you recommend in this case? Do you also recommend buying them used on Ebay from Japan? Thanks :)
Hi! Thank you for asking. Am I understanding you correctly that you're choosing between X10 and X-T20? Just double checking that you didn't mean X10 vs X20 because the X10 and X-T20 are incredibly different cameras (th-cam.com/video/cdqteCyNwdc/w-d-xo.html). The X10 is an wonderful camera for its soul. The Fuji users know what I'm talking about. However it does not take very high quality photos in the modern sense. It has a fixed zoom lens and a relatively small sensor. The X-T20 is an interchangeable lens camera with a much larger sensor. You will likely like its photos more; but you will need to buy lens(es) for it. You can certainly buy them from Ebay but get then from a reputable seller. It is rare to find them unused these days. Kind regards!
@@tom_photo Oh wow thank you so much for these details, I was just searching different Fuji models to see which one is the most appropriate for a first camera. Now, between the X-S10 and the X-T20, which one do you recommend? I saw an X-T20 with a 16 to 50 mm lens kit at 800 USD approx, I'm not quite sure if this is worth it or maybe the X-S10. Again, thank you so much for the response.
@@perop6788 Hi! Both cameras are great. I personally like the handling of the X-T20 more but the X-S10 has image stabilization and might be more advanced. The X-T20 + XC 16-60mm pair is nice but at 800 USD a bit over-priced. You may also want to look into the XF 18-55 mm kit lens which I really like (th-cam.com/video/xCRm00S_IWU/w-d-xo.html). Cheers!

Great photos and presentation, Tom. I was also happy to read about the equipment that you used with which I can relate. Mike
Hi Mike! Thanks so much. Kind regards!
Wonderful photos. You have a super steady hand. E2 + 27mm does not seem to make you regret your defunct A1 travel camera. Why do you prefer the E2 over the X-T20 for travelling? Maybe one day you can make a video on how you hold your camera and take photos by night and obtain these very sharp photos without IBIS and OIS?
Hi Alberto! Thank you very much. Indeed, getting sharp images is bit a tricky in these conditions with he the setup that I have. You gave me a great idea - I think I will make a video on how to get night photos sharp without IBIS or tripod. I used my X-E2 because it has become my dedicated camera for the XF 27mm lens and it's very small. On top of that I just love my X-E2, it feels special. I enjoy minimalistic setups. It was great to hear from you!
Thank you Tom
I take your stated intentions at face value, so don't take this personal. I find AI imagery to be gross, creepy and borderline dystopic, so I'm confused as to why anyone would find a video based on that uplifting, regardless of how it was meant to be perceived. Have a nice day!

23mm(35mm) is my favorite focal lengh, but the 23/f2 is the worst Fujinon lens I own.
Hi! This is interesting. What makes the lens the worst for you and what lenses do you consider much better? Kind regards!
@@tom_photo At first I thought it was broken, but I tried another one and it was exactly the same: it´s hard to get a sharp photo, not only wide open and it´s only ´alright´ in perfect conditions. It´s useless in any low light situation. I prefer character over sharpness when it comes to adapted lenses, but the 23/f2 has none as a quality. The 35/f2 is a much better lens, the 18/f2, the 27/f2.8 and the 27/f2.8 WR are all better, too. Even the og 23/f2 lenses of the early X100´s is WAY better imo, even tho people think it´s not sharp. It was a bummer for me, because I love my setup to be as small as possible, but I´d rather stay with the bigger 23/f1.4 any day. This is the only lens Fuji needs to update.
@@eklatist Hi! Thanks a lot for this very valuable feedback. Best of luck to you!
Weird. Yes. It’s prolly broken.
@@Barry-Sweaty Hi! I would guess the same. It's possible that that particular copy had a problem. Many people like this lens a lot. Cheers!
i'm confused about the purpose of this video.
Hi! Thank you for your comment. I don't know if you had a chance to watch the entire video (until the end) where its purpose is revealed. This video is a New Year's special for my viewers. It really has nothing much to do with the lens; it was my attempt to cheer up the viewers before the year is over :). I've been producing a lot of serious technical lens reviews over the years. With New Year's just a few days away, I thought it would be a great time to do something lighthearted for a change. Thank you for watching, Happy New Year!
I paired this lens with the X-T1 to have a weather resistant combo and emulate the X-100 experience somehow. I haven’t used it much yet, but I am still very excited by this combination. I don’t think you have a weather resistant Fuji camera, and you already own the f1.4 version of this lens. Therefore I am a bit puzzled as to why you would be interested in the f2 WR lens.
Hi! Alberto. I think this lens should work very well with your X-T1. I'm interested in this lens because it's very small and weather resistant. I know several people who declare that, everything included, this is their favorite Fuji lens. Cheers!
I've got the d3300, I never knew that, so would this be better for the colour science.. With the WB thing going on, just looks better, but everyone has their own thing.. 😊😊
Hi! Thank you for watching. Indeed, all cameras are different and different people like different options. Out of the D3*** series the D3300 is probably my favorite. Kind regards!
Where can I buy the lens that struggles to distinguish a cats head from its back end? 🤔 Need it to take pictures of my wife.
Hi! If you need it to photograph your wive then the lens should be absolute top quality :). Thanks a lot for watching!
I've used the lens for a few years. I've never liked 35mm focal length that much, but many of my favorite images of are shot with it and nowadays it is on my camera more often than not. It is sharp, compact and the WR is very handy in a snowstorm for example. It has a pretty strong vignette at wide open though, which is a bit of a bummer, as up here in the Nordics it's rare to be able to close the aperture much. The build quality is solid, the autofocus motor is way better than older Fuji lenses and it feels very nice to handle.
Hi! Thanks a lot for sharing this. Kind regards!
It is not that I disagree with what you say but the think is that tools make better photography since they give more options to manipulate light the way you want and not the way you can or not. In good light even a phone can take decent photos but what can you do when youo need specific artistic result or the light is not good? Thanks for your video and POV.
Hi! Thank you for making this very valid point. Kind regards!
Since you are using the D610, perhaps you can answer this question? Is it true that one can view Live View in G, but not in D?
Hi! Thank you for asking. Live view works very well with both lenses. Kind regards!
@ I have the D and Live View won’t work with it.
@@chakwong Hi! Do you have another lens that you can test it? Has the Live View ever worked with another lens? Try this. 1) Remove lens, clean the connections and put it back on, 2) Make sure the LCD brightness is not turned down, 3) Check that the Live View switch is in the correct position, 4) See if some camera menu choice is not conflicting with Live View, 5) Is battery sufficiently charged?, 6) Maybe try a firmware update, 7) See if Live View is possible in video, 8) Do a factory reset. Let me know how it goes.
@ Hi, the problem is only with the D600 and D610. I have a D600 and 7 or 8 D or AI lenses. Live View doesn’t work on any of them. However I do have DX G lenses. Live View does work with them, albeit in reduced image size. I am thinking of buying a f1.8/50 G FX lens for my D600 to use in difficult exposure situations, eg, nighttime. I want the WYSIWYG LED screen Live View gives me.
Hi! This is very surprising! Did you try hardware upgrade?
Very hip, Tom. The moving camera with the constant exposure but shifting aperture was really well done. I wonder if you used the body to change the aperture. There's 28 minutes of Christmas left here in S.F. The western evening sky had a brilliant Venus in the southwest and nothing else, and Mars in the eastern view, also completely by itself in a fading dark blue clean sky. Made me want to have astronomy software on my Imac like the old days...
Hi! Thanks so much! I think for most shots I actually used the aperture ring of the lens to change the aperture. The skies can be amazing, indeed. I've been using Stellarium on my Linux to track planets and stars in the sky. I'm quite certain Stellarium also works on Mac. Cheers!
Yes, you are right. It is wobbly because it comes from Valdai factory. In one week's time my Krasnogorsk-made 44m-4 will arrive and I will check how solid it is.

I recently got the XT20 for Christmas today! I love using it with the 18-55mm lens, but I'd love to know what lens you're using? It looks very compact.
Hi! Thank you for asking. The lens you're seeing in the video is Fuji XF 35mm F/1.4 R (th-cam.com/video/TsyVkPuo5mM/w-d-xo.html). It happens to be my favorite Fuji lens so I prefer to us it whenever I can. The kit lens you are you're also very nice. Kind regards!
AT 1:33, you mention that VR iwas turned off with both lenes. I did not fine a way to turn off the VR on the AF-P & d3400
Hi Gert! Thank you for asking. With this lens you need to turn off VR via camera menu. Kind regards!
I'm thinking of getting the 50mm F/1.8 D as its one of the cheaper lenses I could get for my D5300. It has the hard stops & distance scale for focus and the manual aperture ring which I would like to have as the AF-P 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 the D5300 came with lacks both. The infinitely spinning electronic focus ring of the AF-P lens in particular bothers me and wastes my time when trying to photograph things in darker areas around sunset or astrophotography. I won't know if stuff is in focus until I do a test shot and the electronic ring is so touchy making it easy to go past my intended focus point with just a little movement of the ring. Another plus with the 50mm F/1.8 D would be that I'll be able to use the passive lens extensions that were given to me with the D5300 with no issues when it comes to focus or aperture control. The wider aperture would be a nice benefit too since F/3.5 tends to be a bit dark for my liking necessitating a higher ISO and/or longer shutter speed to compensate.
Hi! Thank you for making these very valid points. They serve as good guideline for someone considering buying this lens. Kind regards!

Thank you! Check out the interview that Barbaralee Diamondstein did with photographer Gary Winnogrand. He had strong views about photo meaning and his motivation for taking pictures. It’s called: Visions and Images Gary Winnogrand 1981.
Hi! Great suggestion, I'll check it out. Cheers!
All true - painting and drawing are very direct art forms. For example you could put paint on canvas with your fingers. I think the directness of painting is the reason “fine art”paintings sell for much higher prices than photographs. Photography involves the use of equipment. The equipment stands between the artist and the image. With painting, not much stands between the artists and his or her output. I’m a photographer but have no illusions about photography being seen as high art (expensive) like painting, drawing and sculpture.
Hi! Photography is certainly an art form, equal to painting. However, some people think that it's the camera, not the photographer, that does most of the magic. Photos tend to sell for less than paintings because you are not limited to how many copies you can make. Ansel Adams was an exception because he put original art into each of his print and that could not be reproduced. But in digital era things are different. Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughts!
Great tips! A small, lightweight, simple to operate camera with a pop-flash is my personal favorite for travel or most all casual situations. Most any contemporary cameras will take good pictures. Go to a physical store and find something that is comfortable in hand and fits your personality and interests. Think about how the camera feels around your neck. A camera that isn’t physically comfortable to carry and operate is a no-go. Find something inexpensive. If you drop it in the sea or on the floor you won’t be so bummed out. A cheap camera will take great pictures and leave you with money for other things.
Hi! Yes, exactly. The camera is overemphasized in photography. It's the person behind it who decides what to do and how. The best camera in the world is always the one you have in your hand (and not the one that was left at home because it was too big). I've been enjoying reading your comments. Thank you!
Right on! I’ve taken some great pictures with 90 year old Kodak Brownie cameras. Unless a lens is damaged or full of debris or fungus they all can have a look that might be interesting. I really don’t want clinical sharpness - I want an interesting picture.
Hi! Great to hear that you think the same way as me. Cheers!
This reminds me of variations in sound signatures when comparing copies of the same turntable phono cartridges. Two of the same brand and model can sound different for whatever reason. There are a lot of variables when manufacturing any physical device.
Hi! Indeed. I was quite surprised to see how different the three copies turned out to be. Thanks a lot for watching!
It’s my favorite Nikon lens for most situations. I’ve used these lenses for years and years. Lightweight, not so expensive that I worry about damaging it, great color rendering and beautiful images with a Nikon film camera.
Hi! Yes, and what's most surprising is that you really don't expect this high photo quality based on the looks. This lens is better than many people suspect. Best of luck to you with your photography!
I use Nikon D850 and Fujifilm XH2. I like them both. The Fujifilm is fun with film simulations built into the camera. The Nikon is a beast when used in manual modes. I love them both.
Hi! I agree with you. I also like both Fuji and Nikon, and for different reasons. Thank you very much for your feedback!
