  • In this free mix masterclass, Adam "Nolly" Getgood walks through his mix for the Periphery song "Wildfire". There is however a slight twist - the main drum performance has been replaced with a programmed version using the P V: Matt Halpern Signature Pack.

This is such a fantastic tutorial about not only mixing but just general musicianship and how to treat performers in a band!
Basically Nolly is the Rick Beato of mixing. In under 2 hours this guy has touched on so many things and although I love the turbo option for quick jams…this walkthrough shows how badass Nolly is. Keeping all the sounds from all the band in a world where we are constantly told to have di’s is just great. Sometimes having the choices taken away means you work with what you have and you just get it done. Awesome job 🤘❤️

Ive heard other music producers here on YT criticizing Nolly for being responsible for creating a wave of "generic sounding" musicians, as everybody had the "same" sound after watching his mixing and mastering tutorials.
That maybe true, but Nolly never said everyone should use the same settings and tools.
But the way Nolly explains why something is done in a certain way make me understand how to approach sound and what to aim, in symbiosis with what I feel and like about music, thats priceless!
I dont see other investing this much time and energy to create a free, in-depth, complex tutorials about anything, let a lone how to mix and master metal music.
Thank you Nolly for everything you have done so far... be it releasing great plugins for creating music or tutorials like this,Im sure most people really appreciate it!

My favorite parts are when Nolly is just listening because it feels so good to listen to. I was experiencing the same thing. Thanks for that reminder of why I make music. I was taking notes on PV and one thing I wrote was "Don't have too much low end on kick during fast parts." Then I realized that low end was the thing I actually really liked about some of the kick sounds on PV. That "pummeling" effect that a thick kick has during fast parts sounds so much better to me than clickiness. I don't really care if the attack is completely audible because the feeling of the mix being slightly overwhelmed with low end is just so much more satisfying to me. Also, I've never gotten my toms to sound how I wanted and I did it for the first time here. Wheeze vs. Flappy attack vs. attack. Genius. So much of what I was focusing on was removing low end from everything for clarity, but it takes away so much from different parts of the mix. Definitely changed my perspective on a lot of things here. Again, thank you so much!

Just commenting because I saved the video for later. I was one of the people asking for more in depth tutorials in the GGD surveys. Thank you for listening to our feedback. I guess I have a new GGD kit to buy lol.

He delivered! Can’t wait to check this out. Funnily enough, I was actually hoping Wildfire would be the song too.

considering they have been teasing about wildfire for several years, i think they'll be releasing it as the free stem.

In the original track there is my favorite drums sound ever! Happy to see this tutorial! Library is awesome too.
Btw, I personally prefer instrumental bus with only first compressor.

I love the Fabfilter eq3 trick using the visualizer to even up the top end to the bottom. Can you tell us which tilt setting you are using within the plug-in? That would seem to make a drastic difference in perceived visualization of the top end, using this method.
