As much as I like Rantaro, if you have to wait until the bonus content is unlocked to properly develop a character, that doesn't say much about your writing abilities.
I think it's less of the ability to write and rather the stress of writing so many different characters each time that need to have their own distinct personality, talent and doing so with little overlap. Compare Danganronpa to some other series with large casts and there's a noticeable quality difference in the characters, Mayoiga comes to mind instantly. I think one of Rantaro's biggest faults is we knew the least about him as a person among all of the Chapter 1 deaths. For example, small details like Leon's struggle between music and sports, just knowing he wanted to go somewhere in his life gives another dimension to his death. We just needed to learn who Rantaro was as a character for the 53rd game, none of the details of 52 were really needed for that. One could argue him being a throwaway death adds a layer to the twist behind it and the plot as a whole, but I don't think giving the player more to care about with him would have taken away from that. That said, creating 16+ unique characters each entry and not struggling to have some weak ones here or there or two that are extremely similar is tough. That's not even including possible scrapped ideas.

not that much in the anime’s. the anime’s are pretty kid friendly imo and all of the blood in pink in the anime’s. the cursing is minimal and it isn’t that brutal. but in the games i do think that the cursing and sexual references are a little bit more. and in the games (for me v3) are pretty brutal
