  • At 7:24 am Monday North Montgomery County Fire was dispatched to Old Highway 105 at Metts Road. Units arrived on the scene to find a Santek garbage truck on its side in a ditch and ravine and against a large pine tree. The driver who operates the truck from the right side was entrapped. Crews immediately went to work. A heavy-duty wrecker was requested to the scene to assist. Milstead Heavy Duty arrived and was able to hook to the rear of the truck. The driver was so wrapped in the cab that firefighters had a difficult time even getting tools into it. Crews worked with what they had for two solid hours. A medical doctor had already been alerted for the possibility of having to do a field leg amputation. The driver's leg was under the dash and behind the steering column. What made matters worse was where he ran off the road in the deep ditch there was a cross ravine the nose of the truck went into before striking a large pine tree. He was finally freed and transported to HCA Conroe in critical condition. Diesel fuel spilling started flowing into the creek. Commissioner Metts assisted Milstead at putting pads and booms down while waiting for a Hazmat team to arrive. Milstead Heavy Duty removed the truck however Sam Houston Electric was forced to cut power to about 1000 homes due to power lines directly above the scene. The driver's family arrived on the scene along with co-workers as they watched crews work to remove the driver. DPS is investigating the crash. Old 105 will be closed the remainder of the day between Metts and California as HAZMAT crews work to clean the spill.

Glad your OK! March 15, 2021 I got run off the road with my garbage truck. God was with me, I should have made it. Still not 100% but wouldn't trade my job for anything. First few weeks after the crash was the hardest, had flashbacks every night. Make you appreciate all the little things much more.

There is so much weight to a garbage truck. Besides the truck itself, you have the garbage. When the load shifts there is no stopping the truck from flipping over. Prayers for the driver. Thank you so much EMS, Fire, Police, Heavy Rescue and anyone else.

That truck was no where near fully loaded, had it been....driver probably wouldn’t have made it.....luckily for him it only had about 2-3 tons on it.

I drove garbage truck and many other types of trucks. Garbage is compacted, so it would not have the ability to shift. Not so with concrete mixer.

    Bless the Driver's Heart,
and all who worked to free him.
    Goodness.
I hope he is able to recover quickly and fully.
    These 1st Responders,
    and all related life-savers,
    are true Heroes.
The whole operation to free this poor Driver was RISKY for all involved, from what I can see,
and what I read in Mr. Engle's description.
    Wow.
    Just Amazing....

It's wonderful to see all those people working so hard to save just one man's life. The funny thing is that if you walked out there and told them that they were all fired not one single person would walk off until that driver was safe.

well duh. people who AREN'T paid to do this do it every day. and they don't get paid to *start* with. and if you fire someone, yeah they do have to leave immediately and are replaced right in the middle of whatever they're doing. it's not optional. so, lol.

eh. too bad firefighters think they're so special. if they were reasonable and realistic, people would actually respect them. they just do stuff people do every day for free, except they get taxpayer money to do it. it's not heroic at that point. it's just a job. time to clue in, bois.
