- Address: 805 SB at Plaza Blvd, National City
Agencies: NCFD, SDFD, NCPD. CHP
Interviews: Driver Mr. Parra
Dispatch Time: 2:00pm
Driver stated a mattress flew off of the back of a truck, and he hit it. It got stuck under the Semi-truck, and he tried to moved to the shoulder but couldn't. He stopped, got out and the fire began. Fully engulfed, heavy smoke, several explosions, SIG ALERT for hours, traffic was backed up for over 10 miles at one point.
I've gotta applaud the videographer: Clear, steady filming, and the proper orientation too. THANK YOU!!!!
Bakarin aja
R.C. Collins, this video man should be getting a ton of job offers. He's one of the very best! Amazing just how he was able to capture every detail. Camera very stable, zoom excellent, panning top notch, everything well captured. I applaud his skills!
Tejer a palitos
R.C. Collins that’s his job that’s why lol. He sells this to the news
Lol I'm also surprised no told him to get further back. He seems like he's a safe distance away, but I've seen it before where police or others don't favor people near the scene at all.
Love how the cameras doesn’t move while the smoke and fire progressively gets closer to him
That's not true. Look here: 5:20. Scientific source: Institute H. Kloettenschreck (Berlin)
I’m no expert, firefighter, or first responder, but even I know two things: The highway should have been shut down. Secondly, any fire which has grease, oil, fuel, or chemicals needs something to ”smother“ it.
Steven, I also wonder how far away is the police car behind it? That’s one hell of a hot fire to do what it’s doing to the cab. Isn’t anyone worried the gas tank will blow just as they are passing it? Smh
Lol! Just after I finished this, the gas tank DID blow. I see the camera person moved pretty quickly. Dummy
@@chriscooper7642 hwy backed up for miles , water is all they have it does work and its a perfect world we take chances. You must be a democrat
Robert Biondo , you must be an idiot . You need to utilize some punctuation in order to make sense. And no, I’m not a Democrat. I’m a Republican.
From what I remember the foam tank or whatever didn't work so the only option they had was water
Chris Cooper actually they didn't need to close the highway down, they just needed to leave 1 or 2 lanes open, now if it was a Tanker Truck on fire, then that's when they have to close the highway down but its not a tanker truck
I love how every time I see a vehicle fire and people are still driving close to it like nothing is wrong.
Why police don't stop the traffic???
Dios los cuiden a todas los bomberos
IKR!
need to move the car so fire truck can get to the fire
That's because they are STUPID!
The videographer did an excellent job in focusing on the fire and not the side distractions. Concentrate on the event now no matter how chaotic; you can always review the video later to see in greater detail what actually happened.
Can't believe traffic continues to pass by that closely....😨😨😨
Urea, I said the same thing.
Betty they shit themselves when the tire blew when passing by
World has to keep turning, I guess. I'll keep my slow paced island life ( even though I moved to the country).
That's what I was thinking ..wow
People are stupid the ones driving on by.
I know that’s what I was thinking the full time
I am a prof. firefighter for 20 years. Never seen a sloppier job than this. wow.. just wow..
I'm not a firefighter but I was wondering why they weren't using the foam to put it out. They almost caught their hoses in fire a few times and in the beginning, I was wondering if they were gonna put it out or stand there and watch it. Like damn, are they gonna handle it or just let it burn?
Yeah and they knew it was a fuel fire and used water on it, and even worse at one point one hose was used in a way that blew the fire into the firefighters on the other side. They are lucky nobody didn't get seriously burned! This should be a training video about how NOT to fight a fire!
I was trained n used foam n 2001, why didn't they have foam? Was hard to watch:(( hope my house doesn't catch fire..😆
Agreed.
@@rgarito besides that you always start to fight a fire from the ground up to give the air feeding fire lots of humidity.

I seen that too lol.
Paybacks a bitch!
Is somebody in that truck
It’s not like he did that on purpose, so why would you say that?
Can't believe it was 2017 , such an amazing video captured on camera. Time sure flies so quickly .
That truck driver was the most chill dude. I'm glad that this won't ruin his lively hood since he was driving for a company rather than his own truck. Guess this is why insurance is so important.
Yeah man, I appreciate his company looked out for him
sad that this is so surprising
As far as I know, so that the fire doesn't spread or spread, it's best if it is flushed first that has not been exposed to the spread of fire, or flammable materials, not directly to the hotspots because when flushing the fire points, the fire will spread to other parts of the truck due to the water pressure is so great, so the fire is too fast to wipe out a truck and it only takes a very short time to save a truck so big, just a suggestion from me thank you, greetings from Indonesia😊

I remember being stuck for hours after work when this happened , I saw the aftermath. I’m glad I was able to watch your video

Where was the foam? They were spreading fuel, ashphalt, liquid rubber and plastic back and forth into their working area and on the lines??? Police never stopped traffic, traffic passing by within 20' of tires exploding, high pressure air tanks exploding, fuel tanks exploding, toxic fumes from burning fuel, rubber, aluminum, magnesium, vinyl, plastic, tar.....Would make a great training video on how NOT to attack a fuel fire !!!
Exactly!!! My Fire Cheif would have our ass if this shit happened
I said the same thing, WHERE'S the foam truck. Anywhere else would have used foam, too put it out. Especially if they aren't going to shut down the freeway. They are just putting more people in jeopardy. Smh.
right on....some simple sense PLEASE
Yea I was wondering about the foam as soon as I saw the water hoses. But I was like well they're the fire fighters I'm not. Then the second hose comes in and the dude is hitting the chemicals with high water pressure shooting flames directly at the other dude. Then I was like holy shit lol. Then I'm watching all the chemicals go down the water drains. 🤷♂️
so many experts here lmao
The very first thing we learned in Navy Firefighter school , you NEVER spray water on a fuel fire!!!! You gotta use FOAM... Everytime you hit it with a stream, it just flairs, making for a worst situation........
Yeah, I think those guys know about that. You use what you have in the moment. Don’t be such an idiot.
No first lesson should be the pipe should not put on that side since the flow will be to that side.. it should be opposite side, then the water pipes could have been saved from the fire
@@AchayanIn yeah, but Much safer to be on the side of the truck where the traffic dont float

In my state that big of a fire they would have shut the highway down for safety reasons. Dumb that people would drive around it that close.
You and your state and besides your grandma fuck it !!
I'm not American, I'm from Canada and I'm assuming they didn't shut this highway down becsuse the frigging state has 41+million people.. think of all the traffic that would have left..
Yes that close while it exploded more then a few times . Senseless
@@NickyD and that's why you are a mediocre pussy. Diesel fuel is barely flammable only thing that can explode is the tires. Stop believing what you see in the movies and start living in the real world. No risk equals no reward. If in California the most densely populated state they shut down the highway every time a inconsiderate truck driver failed to use his fire extinguisher to take care of a small issue. The state would have standing still traffic every other day state wide. Like 15% of all Americans live in that state.

It's simply STUNNING to me to see how quickly eighteen-wheelers like this one can go up in flames! Same thing goes for car fires - once fire really gets a foothold on a vehicle, it becomes NOTORIOUSLY hard to extinguish - not even foam, never mind plain water, seems able to put out an inferno like this one. Here, the fire departments were left with little choice but to allow this tractor-trailer rig to burn itself out and focus instead on keeping the flames from spreading.
BTW, I loved the interview 911 VIDEO NEWS had with this rig's driver who, thank goodness, escaped unharmed. He did the best he could to get his rig safely off the highway. I really liked his cool manner and gracious good humor. Long may this fine man continue to drive his rigs safely, and may he NEVER AGAIN have to go through another episode like this one. Bravo to you, Ernesto Parra, for your quick and decisive action, as well as to you, 911, for videoing this event as well as you did!

UK they close the freeway and the the other side too. Car fire today on Motorway all stop even when put out took ages to reopen.
My question is why was traffic not stopped?! Especially the traffic coming onto the freeway!
Somebody didn't want to call back up to get out of the cruiser he was at a hotspot
Where it is it’s not worth closing he was almost on the shoulder
@@brennancrumb835 it is ALWAYS worth shutting down. Period.
I’ll bet Jeremy Dewitt would have stopped the traffic.

Where is a fireworks???
After the end of everything they show up see??
FD must have still been in the middle of their lunch. My estimate, maybe 8+ minutes to arrive after the assignment was dispatched? Great video Doug! I was hoping they'd get more foam on the ground for the fuel fed fire, but don't know if they had it available. Good work from those firefighters though, nice quick attack.
Love how the foam was used after the fire was out....
The people casually driving by this thing must be on their way to cash a $1,000,000.00 check!
Why else wld anyone just “drive by” a potentially explosive fire?
As I wrote that, the sucker exploded!
Geezuz!!
And then exploded 3 more times!
They shoulda STOPPED traffic!
WTF?
Phat Girl Gotta keep that traffic going. If people don’t go to work theres no money

My exact thoughts because those passing on the right we're lucky
Pine City Apiary true because explosions are every where block all of the highway

For such a big fire right on a highway, it's crazy that traffic was allowed to continue right past the danger zone..so many things could have gone badly wrong there.
I’m sure it was closed as soon as possible. They can only get there so fast
This is the Southland. Drivers will do anything.

Hahahahah.....first thing I thought of mate...firefighter on right pushes blazing water onto left side firefighters...hose burning...lol...
almost a shit-show...5 tenders...2 dude working....lol
Kinda what I was thinking...
I was going to add a comment, but . Couldn't even save the trailer .
Agree bro thay did a idiot wash .
You must not know difference between a truck company that has “no water” and a engine pumper which has water. There is no visible hydrants in the area, so water conservation is number 1, while a water tender that has durrrrrr water for the fire trucks comes and relays ! Idiot
I hope the guy who didn't tie mattress realized what he did.
If you look closely about at 1:51, you can see the pieces of foam etc... in the lanes of traffic, behind the truck. I can see an orange colored car driving over it, along with a white SUV that kicks up a piece at 2:07.
The man who dropped the matress is going to have to replace the truck.
This fire could've easily been prevented. The guy carrying the mattress should have known that there is a law about unsecured loads and tied it down better or use a trailer. And the driver of the truck should've slowed down and backed off if he knew it was an unsecured load.
Hell he ain't stopping until he gets to mexico.
They fought the fire and the fire won...
"What was your first thought. when you got out of the track and saw the fire? Not much really. You know, I don't get impressed too easily." LOL.
I think he meant to say I don't get upset too easily he sure has a good attitude his Composer was spot on and his Company is lucky to have him very loyal👍
One of the scarier fire videos I've seen. Knowing the fire was hot enough to melt steel like butter...plus seemed like the firefighters were fighting a losing battle for a bit but I'm glad things were brought under control.
"Oops, there´s burning fuel on the ground"
"No problem, just give me more water!""

Crazy people don't call the fire truck

A lot of errors being made in this footage. Good example on what not to do in situations like this
Maybe this WAS a training video.
Praise God that the driver got out of the truck virtually unscathed, and that there were no serious injuries.
I don’t fault the firefighter, they tried what they could. I fault whoever trained and sent them because either they were never trained not to use water on a diesel fire or they were sent out without the proper equipment to fight it.
Let's start with the fact that almost every firetruck in Europe is equipped with One-Seven and in the US almost none is. Keep wondering why the evolution of firefighting doesn't seem to cross the pond....
With literally millions of EMS staff in the U.S., there are hundreds of videos of sloppy work and mistakes. If you assume that means the majority are just inept or unable to preform like the "European" fire service that just makes you naive. Europeans are so ignorant of the environment in the U.S. in general in my experience. Like a wealthy imperialistic nations tend to be about societies they barely understand.
Oil fire means must use foam compound....fire fighter r total wrong
What’s the correct way it should be extinguished?
@@jasc3294 Foam, which sits on top of the oil and removes oxygen therefore extinguishes the fire. Water just makes it worse - as can be seen in the video. Plus it horribly contaminates the sewers or worse, natural watercourses, with the run-off.
I'll give kudos to the shooter as well: nice footage. Steady. Nice ambient sound of tires exploding. Some stuff could be edited out if this on the 10PM News, but overall a decent story if someone was a commuter. And even got an interview of the driver. Handled like a true news photographer which I did at one time. Good job. Though I'm sure how a fire stated from running over a mattress. The idiot who lost it needs to have their ass kicked. Just my opinion.
I find it insane that although traffic sees a semi on fire, they continue to drive by. That’s INSANE!!! One blow and your toasted!

Im a firefighter and never once have i let my hose catch fire or be in the path of flammable liquid flow paths
Well then, firefighter, you should know that this is a combustible liquid and not a flammable liquid. And you should know the difference and why it is important.
EngineerDude
*Maybe he's the brother of the guy who sells the hoses...*
*This is united states, remember?*
I wanted to know.... Why did the water cut off so many times?
Actually they left the hose to contain the liquid from going down the drain and causing fire to travel down the storms drains, they had no other option at that point.
Why wasn't foam used? In fuel fires its standard practise in the UK.
I also note that there wasn't a coordinated effort to push the fire back to source using the pressure of water alone. Seems to me that this video could be used as a training aid in the future.
Firemen attend fires; firefighters fight fires!
I'm sure more than one of the people driving by at 3:56 had a new brown stain on the seat.
If you’re gonna give a time stamp... stamp it before the event occurs

And the heat from their cheifs!
Big mistake that they made is not shutting down the traffic SMH
If that truck would of really exploded you be hearing all the lawsuits files from families of the drivers that kept on passing by when they should of been shut it down
Maybe I'm wrong, but if traffic was halted too early wouldn't that create a standstill traffic situation preventing emergency equipment from reaching the fire if it relied on using the highway to get to it?
@@rayford21 usually they have emergency lanes for that reason so the emergency services can use them to bypass the traffic

Stefan S. Did the driver film this??
Why did the cops not stop the traffic and why have firefighters on opposing sides of blaze blowing ignited fuel into his fellow crew members? What would have happened if lighted fuel had flowed into traffic and not gone the other way. Poor incident control and traffic control in my book.
You can fight a liquid fuel fire with water by using two lines on fan nozzles coming from 90* to each other. Doesn't work on straight stream, and not well when surface is slanted.
the cops were obviously dickheads.
Pluto they didn’t want to stop traffic. You should become a firefighter and write a how to manual

Your a freaking joke dude ! Why would the be in a hurry to spray water when the main Concern is to keep the fuel out of the storm drain plus the semi is a total loss
Probably their objrctives was to control the fire from spreading by not wasting water. From what I can guess they have only that water which they brought with themselves

those explosions were the 6 tires on the vehicle as well as the gas, oil, and radiator blowing out.

There was a truck on fire on the right shoulder and police or firefighters hadn't arrived at the scene yet but everyone slowly got in the far left shoulder as they passed the truck since the wind was blowing East to West. As I passed I could feel the heat from the blaze from INSIDE MY CAR!! Even though I had the windows up and AC on! Early 90’s I saw an old Ford Ranger pull over across from a new fire station with smoke coming from the hood. The fire became much more intense once it reached the dashboard.
Early 2000’s I bought a 1983 F350 chassis cab truck that some vandal set the cab on fire. Nothing in the cab left but metal. It was quite a mess to cleanup. I was going to rebuild the truck with a cab from an F150 but changed my mind after I looked into the over complicated MnDOT inspection process.
I feel bad for those firemen trying to put out the fire.

Excellent coverage and video. You can tell the pros from the amateurs without doubt. Nice job 911...
That is an alarming amount of explosions, at first I thought it was a crazy coincidence that as I scrubbed the video it seemed within a minute of stopping to watch I'd hear an explosion. Crazy to see how response times are and how long a disaster can manifest before any responders can be present. It's a good thing to be mindful about, like you might think calling an emergency response might quell a situation but you have to account that it's probably gonna be an hour before anything substantial is accomplished.
not really an alarming amount, the truck itself has 10 tires, so that's at least 10 explosions.
Disaster?
