I work in a local authority Child Protection team. Our work increases 15 - 20% annually. Any extra resource our senior management team is able to offer is nowhere near enough to keep pace. Every day is extremely stressful as the backlogs increase no matter how many extra unpaid hours you work (extra hours/overtime is non-existent in our LA, because it cant be funded). We're on our knees
The thin rationale that was given to Austerity as we were all worried about what was termed 'swingeing cuts' to public services was that it would be short to medium term, and definitely not forever. I think we can safely say that promise was a total lie and it was always intended to become the new normal. It was the opportunity they thought they would never get again to enact their purely ideological view that government should be as miniscule as possible, without ever really applying that ideology to real world logic, such as: Perhaps the small state envisioned by Conservatives in the last century no longer makes sense when applied to a country with a vastly bigger population, that depends so much more on a variety of services that only the government could provide, or that the private sector really shouldn't have anything to do with. Services which are proven to benefit society, improve people's lives and promote healthy economic activity that far outweighs the cost to the taxpayer. If political ideologies fail to evolve alongside the changing realities of a modern society then they just become dogma and lose any intellectual value they may have once had.
But even that ideology is built on sand, because they never have trouble finding the money to fund a nice, juicy government contract for the private sector. The ideology is that the private sector is always better, but never so good that it can actually be left to the free market. Modern conservatism is basically socialism for the already wealthy, which is why we've seen the biggest shift in wealth from the middle classes to the ultra rich in history.
The Tories: Oh, all these woke snowflakes can't take a joke. Also The Tories: Waaaaah, the BBC is biased against us because they made fun of us! Maybe they shouldn't be so breathtakingly incompetent and callous and maybe there wouldn't be as much material for the comedians to use?
I mean also just the very fact that you're in government. Of course most of the jokes are about you. You're the ones making the decisions. I've got to say, the most painful part of every BBC comedy show is the rehashed jokes about Keir Starmer being boring and having no policies because we need it for 'balance.' Or once in a blue moon, a joke about the Lib Dems being irrelevant.
On the subject of increasing council tax, I think it’s important to consider the nationwide variance. I’m in Cardiff and pay £2k per year, my sister pays £700 in London. A 10% increase would impact me more from the pounds and % of income perspective.
Yep force the councils to go bust, then legislate to force them to sell valuable assets and infrastructure to the private sector. You’d almost think the Tories have planned this.
That is exactly what I think. Also don’t forget getting their cronies to come in and rescue all the failing services which they have deliberately run down by underfunding.
If you're looking for love in the TH-cam comments section then you're looking in the wrong place, mate. I'd recommend your local Weatherspoons or perhaps try sparking up a conversation with someone at the market. 😉
it still breaks my mind a little that david cameron is active in politics again - I thought he screwed up britain so thoroughly with the brexit debacle, there is no way he will be back - shows what I know I guess
Joe and Zoe were great guests. Walkers stating their snacks are 'poppadoms' because that's what they called them reminded me of the government's new legislation stating Rwanda is a 'safe country' because they say it is.
Hello, 27M living in New Cross London. Im Bi - I like philosophy, politics and religion. I would like to meet someone with a high libido, intellectually interested in the same things as me, who likes going to the gym and out on walks and additionally is looking to settle down in the next few years. Must be emotionally available and able to handle banter. Thank you.
I can't tell if the MP complaining about a satirical news show lampooning the government is serious. I assume he is, so in the off chance he reads this: *_It's the government that will be made fun of in a political satire. That's the whole point._*
Can I just say, I don't understand the UK, what is the point of being a government if you can't tax your elected population. US property taxes while still regressive are miles better than UK council tax and we have actual local control

I demand Pod Shag the UK updates
I haven't, but then I don't get out much.

Lib Dem council leader on the show talking about only knowing austerity - don’t ever let them forget they helped to enable that austerity.

Austerity came in in 2010, when he was 17. I think he gets a pass.
