Describing Rishi Sunak as a "craven, weak minded coward" is the best way I've heard him described because that's what he is. Also the rise in far right parties all across Europe is quite worrying for reasons that should be pretty obvious.
Btw, now I just think of plumbers and tradeys as British slang or euphemisms for something Coco withdraws £300 for that is highly illegal... Nish, please never stop heckling Coco! It's utterly delightful.
💯💯💯 Helping to undo the economic, social, political and environmental damage the west has perpetrated around the world is the moral thing to do anyway. Yes it would have the side effect of reducing the refugee crisis, and immigration to the UK.
if "Pod shag the UK" start offering the indian match making services beyond UK, let me know❤😂 love how unconfortable Nish deliberately made himself feel 😅 love from Vienna
As one of the major issues in Rwanda is the death threat to homosexuals, are they checking that those trying to immigrate to the UK are not homosexual? Is that why they need to leave their point if origin?
It's not a surprise for Italy considering their last major election. Denmark does surprise me, though. I don't remember hearing about their latest political movements, and usually if you get the far right or far left in office, there it begins to invade even America's media.
th-cam.com/video/uVZPkw9_XIo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=v9dK5MDjNrCWI9tN This is where I first heard about the other schemes. I've since verified the information through Reuters, BBC and Irish Times articles.
Rwanda hasn't been safe for a long time and are they sending just Rwandans back or any refugee??? Oh yeah, I love Nish!!!! Love his comedy and his reaction to humor!!!!
It's crap. In Canada we keep them and let them freeze (no joke - we have no housing for anyone be they unhoused, drug addicted, or refugees). It is a sad state of affairs still it is better than being LGBTQ in places like Uganda. There they put you to death.
It's fascinating to compare British politics with American politics. What Nish said about how people couldn't care less about the clown show going on at Downing Street when so many British folks are more concerned with paying for heating bills, food, etc, and the US where the economy is, by all metrics (though maybe not felt quite as keenly by the average American) on the upswing in terms of inflation, wages, etc, but the heavy influence of right wing media has taken a hold of the narrative for so many people that 60-70m Americans would still vote for a man who tried to blackmail Zelenskyy for political dirt (illegal), was accused of 10 cases of obstruction of justice by special investigator and former FBI agent Mueller in an official government report, nearly 30 women have accused him of sexual misconduct/assault, consistently sides with right wing, fascist strongmen like Putin, Erdogan, Kim, etc, tried to illicitly negotiate the lifting of Russian sanctions even before he was elected, left Peshmerga allies high and dry and for dead, taken millions from foreign governments *while in office* along with his family who also received, billions in some cases, stole crates and crates of top secret, nuclear documents - some of which are now missing - and, oh yeah, incited an insurrection against the US, its citizens, the government and attempted to overturn the election across multiple states like Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, etc... But, if you have a powerful, loud enough speaker, you can still convince a massive number of people regardless of if the economy or things are looking so much better than before (at least in the case of the US) and Clive is absolutely spot on when he says that we are facing fascists and fascism already. I would be curious to see just exactly what Germans thought and saw in Germany in the early 1930s... Feels like we never see it coming until the boot is on our necks, but a large portion of people are sounding the alarm, but it's so very disheartening to see so many not express any sense of urgency or alarm at what's happening beneath our very noses. I hope that the UK can correct its course b/c a lot of what you're experiencing feels like what conservative politicians have done in the US as well. Erode support and finances for the post office (the NHS in the case of the UK) and, in general, gut various institutions that would otherwise be helpful to all Americans then point to it as an example of how government can't work or is dysfunctional or otherwise privatize government functions that will, in turn, be motivated solely by profit margins. The time to act is now, not when the boot is on all of our necks.
As someone whose profession has involved reading the Data Protection Act 2018, broadly speaking, information can be use either if it is "necessary" for a competent authority to use or it is with the owner's consent. What I guess I'm saying is that Pod Shag the UK is GO!!! The submission of a profile, with the goal of being setup to get laid by a like-minded person certainly constitutes informed consent! As with any reasonable Dragon's Den investor, I'd like to give you £5 for 100% of your business!
Quote of the episode: Sometimes, I need cash! Sometimes!! I just do, alright?? ("Stop judging me!" Ok, maybe I just imagined her saying that last part in my head...)
I can't speak for you Nish, but as person of Asian descent, I often hoard the love of all my single friends b/c of the lack of parental affection I was shown as a child (which may also give away which region of Asia we are talking about, at least according to stereotypes)... your shows are not only fun and informative, but strangely therapeutic. But, perhaps I should seek professional help. 😝
And unlike Israel, Caribbean nations would NOT invest reparation funds in apartheid and genocide - surely that adds to the points in favour of (rich Brits and corporations) paying up
Doesn't EVERYBODY know this? After hard-boiling an egg, you give it a little bash to crack part of the shell. Then you can easily distinguish the hard boiled ones.
After that entire conversation, the revelation at the end from Coco that, in fact, Coco just boils the entire half a dozen eggs at once... I can only assume this is due to some deep, childhood trauma/resentment against scrambled eggs, sunny-side up eggs and any baked goods for which they could be used instead... 😂🤣
I submit myself to Jay(J?) from Yorkshire as a fellow fantasy novel fan looking to, if not to partake of coffee, at least tea (or more preferably Masala chai or variants thereof) at various locations and for chatting as a friend (I'm afraid I do not qualify as a potential candidate for her) until we can find her someone she fancies.
I won't lie, when I went overseas, I always make a point to try local food. One Christmas my family was able to go to London, and our hotel offered a special black pudding, so of course I tried. To this day my sister does an impression of the face I made when I put, what I described as, "it's as the memory of every nasty, terrible thing I've ever tasted suddenly come back to me in a flash of culinary horror." Given, my mom is from the southern United States so I won't pretend we don't have our dishes that are definitely "a developed taste", but at least it's only because of the pure amount of butter and/or sugar we pour in those.
We almost always boil eggs by the dozen, if I'm working hard I'll often eat several for lunch. I used to boil 3 at a time when I lived alone, so I could bring them to eat, boiling one seems like going for a hair cut and only trimming 1/12th of your hair! I usually like to carry some cash, but you shouldn't carry more than a small % of your total cash assets, unless you're a pimp, they need to carry a bill roll iirc. Wait, is Coco a pimp!? It's a bit of a moot/dumb point, but I think it's worth remembering that the colonial powers did not need explicit slavery to exploit a local economy completely, the real issue was that they restricted those countries ability to invest in their own infrastructure/future, as well as restrict very heavily all trade that wasn't with the parent country. I suppose I shouldn't leave out that the colonial powers also made a point of playing the subgroups of their colonies against one another, not unlike how the modern right uses racism among the poor to further empower the wealthy, borders were deliberately set up so the locals would always have an 'other' to hate, as well as the horrific brutality designed to traumatize whole cultures for centuries. Those things resulted in brutally stunted economies that by definition cannot ever catch up to their former colonial oppressors. People seem to forget that one of the reasons we got rid of slavery was that it's an economic depressant, mostly because you have a large number of workers who aren't consumers (that you have to provide for btw, you can literally pay people sub-starvation wages under post-slavery capitalism because it's the workers problem that they're too hungry to work, the capitalist can just find newer, more desperate workers), with that extra wealth being piled into the coffers of the already wealthy, were it is never used for consumption, meaning it's economically non-existent. Ironically, as capitalism got more and more exploitative, the workers couldn't continue to consume without going into debt, hence the massive debt crisis as workers struggle to maintain their standard of living. As wealth continues to disappear into the coffers of the ultra-wealthy it is happening again, the solution the right in the US has is to move back towards slavery step by step, ignoring that doing so has been killing their economy since the 60s, when it was unthreatened in it's global hegemony. Arguably the US economy has never recovered from the incompetence of regan's 'feed the rich/starve the poor' policies, it's infrastructure is now badly outdated/crumbling and the government is simply too poor to rebuild because of tax cuts to the rich. I remember hearing about the spongey concrete issue in the UK, so I guess you guys have similar concerns, since you also don't tax your ultra-wealthy enough.
Why is it that I see Coco as an intelligent, funny journalist... but, on the weekends, I imagine her being like... was that Beth in Manchester who showed up at the DJ's booth and was like, "4 Sambucas!" I hope Beth got her four sambucas, but what was a bit concerning was how the DJ at the booth didn't immediately say that Beth wasn't at the bar until after Beth flashed her credit card and the DJ realized he couldn't just dupe her for cash... That DJ was very sketchy. Anyway, go Coco!!
I mean if you two don't want too much responsibility for setting people up but will want others to date/meet new people, you could always host a speed dating event for listeners at a later date. Just a thought...
As far as reparations, Ronald Reagan of all people was the President that signed off on paying $20,000 per person to the Japanese and their families who were interned during WWII. It may be the single decent thing Reagan did in his two terms.
I'm fascinated to learn that Nish is a former member of the armed forces who served in the Middle East. More importantly, black pudding and pig's feet are delicious!
I would like to suggest that you _(and everyone else)_ stop calling things like the Rwanda policy "tough". It's not "tough" on immigrants, it's cruel to them, not to mention _incredibly_ financially stupid and short-sighted. "Tough" implies something fair or reasonable even though it's harsh. That's not what the policy is. The policy is cruel - someone has left their home country, including their entire life up to that point, behind to try to apply for asylum in the rich, cosmopolitan UK, and they're involuntarily sent to Rwanda, a country they've no interest in going to, and a country with a poor history of refugee treatment. The Rwandan government can then decide what to do with them, including sending them back to their home country - the one they were seeking asylum from in the first place. What an awful experience, which is the point, of course, because why else would the Tories concoct such a horrible scheme except to appeal to their racist and xenophobic voters? The policy simply tricks potential migrants then literally strands them in the middle of Africa. What a cowardly, shortsighted, xenophobic, cruel way to treat someone seeking a better life. That's not tough. "Tough" would be reforming the immigration and asylum system in the UK to accommodate more people and help new arrivals find jobs or get job training, while simultaneously demanding that they work hard, contribute to the British economy and society, and are productive British citizens or guests. The Rwanda policy is weak, dishonorable, mean, and shockingly expensive _(about 300 million pounds so far and nobody has been deported yet; it's expected to cost 63,000 pounds _*_more_*_ per migrant to strand them in Rwanda than it would to keep them in the UK)._ As an American I'm constantly amazed at the racism in both our countries, but especially on the subject of immigration. _Immigrants are good for the economy._ The left is always hemming and hawing on about "we have a duty to support them" or "we can't just send them back, they're not safe where they came from" or whatever, and that's true as far as it goes, but conservatives will never go for that argument, they just want to be mean to brown people and claim it's their own fault. The cruelty is the point for them. The argument we on the left need to make is this: immigrants bring a vigorous work ethic and want to do economically positive things in our country. Immigrants, and _especially_ their children are absolutely invaluable in a market economy. They start new businesses at a much higher rate than native born people. The first generation are almost invariably incredibly hard workers _(immigrant work ethic is a stereotype, not a myth)_ who value education and civic responsibility _and they instill these things in their children._ Their children have _(at least here in the US)_ very high success rates in school and business, and become doctors, lawyers, engineers, and other professionals at a higher rate than the children of people born here. The Tories are being vicious, cowardly, and cruel towards immigrants _(which I'm sure they view as a positive) while harming the UK's long-term economic prospects._ Please stop calling the Rwanda Plan "tough". It's cruel, stupid, and cowardly. There is literally nothing positive to say about it.
Have not seen The Traitors, don't intend to watch it, the whole concept gives me the same vibe I got when Big Brother first came out, or any other reality TV show that tries to build entertainment off betrayal, with the inevitable consequences that the public will be turned against anyone they deem a bad guy despite the gleeful TV company egging on the whole situation. Then there'll be a suicide or something, everyone will say "oh gosh how did it come to this" and they'll turn on the TV company in an effort to absolve themselves for watching and participating in the mass beasting... It's a cycle I was sick of before it even properly started, and it just keeps piling up the misanthropy for me: the public, media and politicians straight up disgust me, which doesn't exactly leave me much wiggle room. Anyway, the point is stuff like this always struck me as just modern bread and circuses, and I have never wanted to be crowd or gladiator - I find I just want to locate the organisers and feed them to their own lions. I know I'm unusual and a bit strange - I don't particularly even like playing competitive *board games* because I find even jokey friendly competition extremely demotivating. The instant someone says 'ahaha I'm doing better than you' or 'wow you're doing so well I'm losing so bad' I just want to stop playing and walk away. Like 'if life is about beating other people... you're welcome to it, I'll be over here on my own as usual'. Not sure where this comes from, I always seem to find myself at odds with whatever the loudest part of the crowd is shouting about. /shrug. I think it actually all comes from when I discovered fashion and pop music changes so much: it wasn't that it changed that put me off, it was the way people who previously loved/hated a thing seemed to change their opinion on a dime *purely because of timing*, not the aesthetics or whether the thing was any good. And I just sort of inferred from that that anything the crowd is doing - especially if they're doing it loudly or proclaiming it the best or worst thing ever... is very likely being done entirely mindlessly and they'll turn on it sooner or later. Either way, The Traitors is not for me. Do enjoy your mass endorsement of backstabbing, everyone. And yes, I know how *horrendously* judgy I am. Believe it or not I'm very nice to individuals. Its just when I step back and look at our species and culture from more than 2 feet away I find myself thinking Thanos lacked ambition.
I genuinely want Pod Shag the UK to be a recurring segment. 😂

🤣❤
I also boil the whole pack of eggs at the same time. Great minds... 🙂
I've only recently found out that Denmark, Italy and other countries in the EU have been floating Rwanda-like policies.
Legit, it's not a good sign that we're seeing the rise of these far right parties in various countries.
There is more than just a few steps rightwards going on over the whole of Europe.
Yeah, it's shocking and infuriating. Anyone read a fecking history book?!?

What are good UK news organization products to read?
I cannot tell you how crushingly disappointed I am in the former speaker appearing in American trash TV. All respect lost.
After that entire conversation, the revelation at the end from Coco that, in fact, Coco just boils the entire half a dozen eggs at once... I love black pudding.😅
I won't lie, when I went overseas, I always make a point to try local food. One Christmas my family was able to go to London, and our hotel offered a special black pudding, so of course I tried.
To this day my sister does an impression of the face I made when I put, what I described as, "it's as the memory of every nasty, terrible thing I've ever tasted suddenly come back to me in a flash of culinary horror."
Given, my mom is from the southern United States so I won't pretend we don't have our dishes that are definitely "a developed taste", but at least it's only because of the pure amount of butter and/or sugar we pour in those.
It's excellent. People all round the world eat blood pudding of one sort or another. The English have got nesh about their own food.
