In this video, we go through a battery of different paint strippers used on an old aluminum boat that all failed. We eventually found one strong enough, but it's not what you think it would be!

I’d like to suggest you consider a polycraft tuffy for one of your future builds. Just putting that out there! Love your vids
I just picked up a 1973 12' car top applebee (flat bottom)
Any suggestions for a lightweight build?
if you use oven cleaner cover it after spraying with thin plastic (painters mask) . the vapor created by the oven cleaner will dissolve/soften the paint far better . its designed to work inside of a closed oven so the vapor is trapped and helps the process. great vid cant wait to get started on my own project...
The best thing to use to strip ALL that old paint off, believe it or not is Easy-Off oven cleaner..!! I've worked in a major sign shop and later worked in a marina repairing and refinishing boats. They were stuck on liquid paint strippers ( Marine ) type as well...UNTIL I introduced oven cleaner !! Now that's all they use, even to clean fiberglass hulled boats..!! Try it...!!
How does this not have more views! So awesome.

Plane Naked made quick work out of 60 year old sun baked paint on my Cessna. Relatively inexpensive for a 5 gallon container
Great video / awesome project and kickass channel! Boat came out great with the oil base . Here’s a great hack for using oil base paint, Tractor Supply sells an Oil base Paint catalyst / hardener which will help a ton. MUCH QUICKER dry time, added gloss, and the best part…. Incredibly stronger and more durable. A small van is around $20 and enough for a whole gallon. It’s a game changer! 👊🏼 thanks for the great content and for inspiring creators like myself , cheers!
I have used Aircraft remover. It's expensive but it works.
So does standard paint stripper.
I used Total Boat Aluminum boat barrier on the bottom. It's a two part epoxy paint. It sealed every rivet and seam.
Used to be blue used to be new before a full got a hold of it
I am sitting hear painting my boat as you are posting this.
I watched a guy use aircraft stripper to remove paint from a small plane. Once he applied the stripper, he pressed plastic into it. Not sure what mil thickness it was. Kept it from drying out. Worked pretty good
This is the trick, I've done it before.
That's a ton of paint on that boat! I'm sure it will be a cool build when you're finished.
It's pretty cool that you and the crew is giving a boat away too. I'm currently building a 15x42 flat bottom right now.
Decades of ownership
Solvable stripper. One liter for whole boat and had extra left over. 5 -10 min and 3 layers are falling off. Took like 1 hour total including stripper, scrape then brillo pad and wire brush by hand to finish.
Got a name brand?
Yes rent some boats. I usually don't get much time to spend in Havasu especially pulling the boat but if I could hop in the car and jet out there and hop on one of your boats would be awesome. I've got a 23' deck boat I bought in havasu but hoping to pick up one of your kits for my 1976 12' deep v mirrorcraft and be the slayer of our small lakes
Try those Lamsion Rust Remover discs. I just used them today to knock rust off my trailer. All the paint came with it, down to bare metal in seconds, no chemicals.
We use Bonderite S-ST 6776 Lo Aero in the aviation industry. Use ScotchBrite and Simple Green (or a similar method) to remove accumulated soils from the paint, then apply the stripper. It wil normally get you down to the metal within 15 minutes and washes away with water.
Thanks
A torch and a scraper works good sometimes for removing paint but not always
The oven cleaner is awesome!! Will definitely use it
It just leaves a mess. be ready for it.
Hell yeah I'm looking forward to the team build
Im doing the same thing i see at least 6 different colors on there. Boat is from the 1950s. I just need to strip all the paint to inspect for more holes lol. It actually appears to be an embossed aluminum or whatever they call it when its kind of rough/dimpled like the exterior of your grandmas fridge, so it's hard to get all the paint off the little nooks. My plug in wire wheel takes forever and my hands are numb from hours also getting stabbed by those little pieces. I'm like 10% done and I'm already over it. Defintiely gonna try that easy off and maybe test a few different paint strippers side by side. That top coat of black paint is THHIIICCCC too.
Just got a 1975 13' Gregor..can't wait til I can do one of your builds..
Love it!! Keep it rolling
To stop the wire brush death arrows, put on a loose fitting apron and it keep you from death by a thousand cuts.
Haha
Nice oven cleaner trick
Thanks
I used a 90 die grinder with a 320 sand pad. It's blasted the paint right off.
I'll look into it
I do enjoy your videos.
Easy off is an old modlers trick to strip paint off plastic scale models to repaint. Works great
A wire wheel on an electric drill is the best way. A pointed circular sandeder is also great.
Depending on what axle you have, you can put axle on top of leaf springs to lower the trailer the height of the axle( usually 2-3". I'm building a jet jon and I want my trailer super low too. Let's me put-in a lot more shallow places
Thanks for the tip
Twisted knot wire brush attachment on angle grinder works a treat for the heavier paint.
Yeah but it’ll chew through the hull
@@TinyBoatNation i thought it would too but then i tried it. It's not as nearly destructive as it looks. Give it a go on a test spot, you won't be disappointed ✌
I bought an attachment for my pressure washer off Amazon. Works awesome
Link?
There are plenty to choose from. All made in China, sold by different people.
Good content…A+
lysol toilet bowl cleaner to take off paint
Awww snap! I want to get over to the shop in illinois. I’m about 30 min away. Got 2 boats this year and almost a 3rd. #addicted
I've had one of those wire wheel pieces in my eye before. Luckily it missed everything important. Just felt like irritation except I couldn't close my eyelid all the way.
muriatic acid might work it cleans/etches aluminum and can strip paint you can also get a 30$ attachment for a pressure washer that lets you use sand or media to blast paint just makes a mess
Thanks!
That is a cool trailer! It looks like it came from the Fallout Game Universe! lol
Definitely odd, lol
Try using flap disks instead of the wire wheel
You’re 100% right about paint removers. The old Jasco was amazing now it’s trash
Yeah, what a shame.
Thanx for the hard work doing great. I heard if you cover your project with painters plastic after putting the paint stripper on helps because the fumes won’t escape just idea for next 1.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video man keep it up. Glad to see this boat is getting a new life but I couldn’t agree more about sitting on a build and letting inspiration hit you 💯
Thanks, man!
A lot of work but it’s looking great so far. I’m really excited about this build because it’s going to help me a lot with mine. It’s very similar to this one. I’m trying to think about what I want done to mine too. Trying to meet my needs which isn’t really much lol.
A lot of people have these old StarCrafts.
Nice !
I need a new boat send it my way 🤙🏽
I saw a guy put on stripper and then put cling wrap over it to keep it from drying out so it can really soak in. It's supposed to work well, but I haven't tried it
I tried that, it didn’t work….for me that is
Mike,
How long until your fishing boat rentals are packed at the channel on a busy weekend full of beer? Lol
By this fall
Take your time my man. We wanna see what you come up with. No need to pump it out
sweet
Easy off I used to clean my 2000 25 Johnson, all I can say is at least it needed a paint job anyway 😭
Lol
I've been looking for a jon boat and trailer but all the ones in my area are 1k+ with no title and in terrible condition. My boss tells me today he will sell me his boat and trailer for 300 bucks cause he bought it for his son and they never used it. I'm excited to get my hands on it and start working on it.
I wish I would have washed this a few days ago.
I got my grandfather's 1430? Flat bottom Jett boat, would that be too narrow to put a deck on? I'm trying to restore it. Thanks again for all the informative videos
The special area…
Painful process
brother, my novice research shows not to use easy off on aluminum as it disolves aluminum, can you give me some closure so i can just use easy off lol it worked well for you im wondering if you had any issues with the aluminum?
If that's a Duratech boat don''t undersell They are rare and highly sought after.
You do good work!! Thank you!!
Thanks for watching!
Mine had ridiculous amount of layers. I ended up wire wheeling the whole thing
That’s super risky!
@@TinyBoatNation does it make it better if using a brass brush
You could probably get a drop axle for the trailer to lower it for not a lot of $
How do you.drop it?
Thin it with mineral spirits and it will cut back on orange peel
Thanks
Still would love the ole school boat for my little pond in Montana
Hint hint
If it works there, u can start a fleet here at Lake Powell ill manage it for u 💯
Right!
Are you starting a business if so when are you going to do a round of investing?
I've got a wire stuck in tip of my nose before. It was 1/4" deep
Oh man
Wire wheel on a grinder
Gotta watch the grit of the wire
Guess what, the creative process takes time. That's right. It's called a creative process. Attention to detail takes time. Stress is the enemy of creativity.
Words to live by
I’m going to paint my boat exactly the same after watching this! Did you use any primer or did you just wash it and start painting with the total boat?
I wish he answered. I don't understand what the aluminum paint was for or how it was applied
Dude if that green primer is the same thing we put on airplane skins it’s hexa chromium and it’s very toxic when grinding off you don’t want to breathe it in or get it on your skin I’m sure one time probably won’t hurt but it does nasty shit to you
And as old as that boat is I would say it probably was the same shit just be careful when you come across it again
Thank you!
Get you some of that stuff takes vinyl off of car tops body shop man will tell you what’s the name of it is
So you put on total boat on as primer and then add the rustoleum enamel?
Yes, I'll go over the process in the next follow up vid
Did you wait till the total boat was completely dry or just till tacky and put the rust oleum on it?
Dry then I scuffed it.
paint stripper that actually works = circa 1850 heavy body paint and varnish remover
Thanks
Are you still working on this boat and are you planning on finishing it? I just started my floor framing today.
Yes, it’s coming up after the pontoon series
Use a Burnishing Machine it help with auto jobs
Thanks
@@TinyBoatNation hey brother, I believe someone hack your channel saying I won one of your tiny boats! I checked the subscriber this person has your pic and only like 4 subscribers. I knew it wasn’t you.
What would you use to remove a factory 2006 Crestliner wrap
A heat gun is best, I believe
So you don’t need a clear coat?
No...not for this job.
laquer thinner
Nope
How well does the rust oleum paint hold up ? I have aluminum boat looks exactly like that one. Want to paint it soon.
I actually don't know but I would imagine that it holds up pretty well given that oil based enamel is really robust
How do you enter to win
We'll do a video on it
Casey Stoner fan??
Idk who that is
WD-40 will take any paint off your hands.
How do you become a channel member? The button isn’t there anymore.
It should be there. There's a link in the description
That looks like a gator made trailer
It was homemade
So....Where is episode 9???
Check the playlist on my channel - starcraft
Illinois resident here. I’ll trade you my 14’ Lund deep V for the giveaway boat. 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Next series coming up!
Just a tip wd40 gets paint off your hands pretty good no joke scrub it in good it does pretty good also a little bit of gas eats on a rag eats paint pretty well especially mixed gas
Wd 40 works great to remove oil based paint! Followed by dawn dish soap to remove the wd 40
This is making me really NOT want to paint my boat.
No, they’re not all like that. Video is for people having serious difficulty with old paint.
Dude fuck all that scraping and chemicals… they make paint removing discs for a grinder that aint gonna hurt the metal put a mask on and rip it cut off a bunch of time
Woven hard plastic lookin things that dont throw wires at you lol
Link?!?
I wanna boat 🚢
I got tired watching you work on that. Dang.
😆
