- From the comments I got on the other video (jpfara.co/HiKqao), here's how to create the vector halftone effect in Illustrator, in english!
This is done entirely in Illustrator, so no need to even open Photoshop.
There is a plugin that does halftones called Phantasm CS, but it's not as free as doing it this way :)
woah... such a good tutorial!! im a total debutant on Ai and the fact that you always explained how to show some settings and explained everything really in-depth truly helped me and saved me so much time and nerves!!! thank you
Nice and simple tutorial. And no need to worry about your English; it's perfectly fine and you communicate what the viewer needs to know far better than I've seen in many tutorials made by people who has it as their first language. Well done.
Dude your english is amazing I'd have thought you were British! Top tutorial
My left ear enjoyed this.
Sodylin lol
Sodylin I thought there is no sound , till i read your comment , my left headphone not working :D
+Marwa Kalloub Haha Me too Marwa!! :)
+Montalvan13 :D
+Sodylin I thought it was my headset XD
Awesome Tutorial! As I was putzing around with this in Illustrator, I realized you can adjust the gradient of the original shape AFTER you've applied the halftone effect, this adjusts the sizes and spaces of the dots! Seemed easier than adjusting the 'max radius' of the halftone effect in order to get a tighter or looser effect.
A "halftone" is actually old technology from commercial printing. Printing presses couldn't print continuous shades of color. All photos had to be converted to a halftone screen pattern - tiny little dots of color that give the illusion of gradients in color.
I struggled every time I used the halftone effect, and this tutorial cleared all my doubts. Great work !
Thanks, very comprehensive. Doesn't sound like you're new to doing tuts in English at all.
Your spoke very clearly and with perfect English! At first when there were four colors, it reminded me of a moiré effect. I like the way you were able to change it to black. Thanx for speaking in English, it helped!
Finally, I found someone who posted a normal working crack!
THIS was the most helpful video on halftones I have found. The information has helped me SO much. THANK YOU! :D
Starting with one circular dot and work with the blend-tool ist doesn't take longer and de dots are perfect circles!
Your English is very good!
Thank you for this, very helpful. It just amazes me how incredibly rude some people are, just horrible.
Really, really good! You explain everything, which to me makes a great tutorial. Not just specifying steps, but actually telling "whys" as well. Great job! Thank you, Sir, for your time and effort!
many many thanks. i've been floundering with halftones and vectors for a while. you gave me two lessons for one watch. very kind of you. ps. your english is excellent.
Thanks ! I'm working on a full series of videos to put up on Udemy as a comprehensive course, and will definitely keep making more of these specific tutorials, in english.
really nice of you to come up with this!
An oldie, but a goodie! Thanks again for the help!
I was looking for this solution in 2020 and your video is very helpful. Thank you!!!!
Despite the fact that this is an excellent tutorial,
the uploader said, "Uh" at least 45 times in less
than the first 6 minutes of the video.
Some graphic artists need counseling.
Thank you, Mr. Faraco, for taking the time to create this video.
Very professional, and easy to follow. You're spot on, thank you!
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing it with us. You did a good job for your first one in english. I know how confusing it gets trying to remember or figure out words when you don't readily use them. Once again, thanks!
Your actually the goat, This helped so much thank you.
A very useful lesson for all aspiring softians
Still revisiting this as a reminder in 2018. Thank you! :)
Increase the threshold as well and the finer dots will be more circular
Your English is impeccable
when you lined the CMYK dots, it became all black, but at the same time you lost the circle shape, it's a bit edgy, a solution that I found for that, is keeping the angles default, but using only K and dropping CMY.. So is that a good thing to do?
GREAT tutorial, helped me A LOT with my project, thanx
The rectangle was already black, but it was behind the blend effect's other (white) rectangle .. I just selected it with the direct selection tool (shortcut A) and moved it forward with Cmd + Shift + ].
thank you! I have illustrator CC at work and got lost for a bit but found my way!
no apology needed you did a great job on this tutorial regards.
Your english is just fine! I wish I had an accent as good as yours!
Great tutorial with a good level of detail and explanation. Thank you for this!
Thank you for sharing your insight. That was great tutorial, very clear and easy to follow. I'm thrilled to use this effect!
Thank you so much!)) And hope the next videos will be with stereo :)

Man thank you your a great teACHER, curious I noticed you used the sequencer for drums, but can't I just play those softs via the
This was a very helpful tutorial, your explanations taught me a lot.
Wow! it's Amazing I did it well ! Perfect work !
Great stuff Joao, This is exactly what I have been looking for to complete a project. Keep the tutorials coming son.
FANTASTIC TUT, YOU HAVE A GREAT ABILITY IN TEACHING, PLEASE DO MORE TUT's IN ENGLISH :)
You do great work bro. Keep it up bro.❤❤
I guess its better to offset the gradient stop a bit of the edges. Now the circle, if you need a circular shape, has flat edges. Of setting that gradient stop will make a more perfect round circle
Tooks me some guessing with the new panel. But looks super nice now
muy buen tutorial, espero saber de mas de tus tutoriales y pasarla genial.
Your should do more english tutorials! YOu speak perfectly, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
utilised and enjoyed wNice tutoriallst increasing in value.
Worked thank you alot! you're the best bro liked
You did very well in English ... THANK YOU! Love this tutorial!
If you are in CMYK mode, you will not see any colours like this video. This effect works only in RGB.

any question
muito legal! obrigada, joão! (and your english is much, much, better than my portuguese!)
Hi, I am no expert in Ilustrator but know a little of P.shop....When in Tracing under adjustments, you have a threshold setting, lowering this a small amount may well have eliminated the small cirlce dents, quite possibly the line will be fine tuned around the alaisiated edges giving a more circular finish???
This video made my week. Thanks so much.
Unfortunately this is now out dated for Illustrator CC. The options are not there for the final converting.
was an awesome lecture. thx
good stuff, your English is fantastic for a second language
HELP!! When I apply the Color Halftone effect, the result is not the same as the video. The gradation is expressed with Black-Grey colors in identical size of dots, instead of the SIZE of the dots as shown in the video. Does anyone know how to change this? Using Illustrator 2020 version.
6 months too late I'm sure, but rasterize the artwork first and then use the feature. (:
Not being a whiz at math, I was wondering if there was a simple way to calculate how to make the "radius" translate into DPI since the vector is not size specific
i.e. how do i get to where the printed resolution is between 47, and 65 lines per inch?
Thanks so much for making tNice tutorials video! You really broke it down well.
I'm sorry: how did you manage to have bigger dots in the black part and smaller dots at the edges? I have all dots of the same radius... Thank You!
Very good explanation
my left ear loves this
this was 10000% helpful.
thank you so much
p.s. - your english is fine.
LOVE this. thank you so much!! (And your English was perfect.)
Thank you! That was very helpful and your English is excellent!
I set up the angles all to the same 45 and now the dots are in the same place, but i am using a Yellow to white gradient, and there are black dots in the middle. Any idea how to make them dissapear?
Thanks... it's working... Good Job...!
I want to put a drum in a certain ti but it automatically goes to the grid. in your video does not happen
hey ! you have just forgot to mention that all the effect only work on RGB mode!
VERY helpful..glad to hear some explanation of the instructions. Thanks!
Very helpful, and if your English is this good, I can only imagine your Portuguese!
Cough... wow an amazingly accurate insight into printing
Hi, I was wondering what happened at 13:43, how to make the top dots turn into black box and the bottom white box also turn into dots. Thanks!
Very good tutorial and your English is perfect!
I learnt english in Australia, and then lived in England for a couple of years, so .. :D

Great video! Quick question, at 13:45 what did you do to make the rectangle solid black?
You and MysteryGuitarMan! How can you portuguese people be so good at English!? Great Tutorial. ;)
Hi, for some reason when trying this (starting with a black circle) I'm getting only black dots and not the CYMK range that shows when you zoom in to the circle after applaying filter. ANy idea why this might be? Thanks.
muy buen video , me gusto mucho ... un saludo desde argentina
Yes very professional and informative. Good... Very Good.
Thank you so much. You have definitely helped a lot.
Sorry, I should say I was starting with a black circle with radial gradiet applied, but still only get black only dots. Should I start with a gradiented black dot which is not pure black? Also I've been trying to apply it to letter forms (converted to outlines with gradient applied) but not getting much results. Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
