- Police data shows wheel and tire thefts are on the rise, and one nurse who works in Philadelphia knows the headaches they can cause firsthand.
That tow truck driver was worse than the thieves.

The vehicle is on bits of something. You can see red under the rear brake rotor.
You know what, you can see red skis under the back and he’s using the plastic “milk crates” the thieves used to get their floor jack out from under the car on the front. So, I take that back. It may ding the brake backing plates a little, but probably no worse than the dollies. Short of having some wheels to bolt on it, this is okay.
Because the tow truck driver works for the body shop and get a percentage of the total bill.
This is worse than it looks because it can cause major underbody damage. It's wheel theft, not tire theft.
Honda rep’s statement was a basically a flex. “We sell more cars than our competitors”. 😂

I have an old Kenwood pull-out stereo from the ‘80s in storage. I believe detachable faceplates came out in the ‘90s.
It’s happening often in the Bay Area in the last several months. It’s mainly newer model Hondas. To be safe, purchase two to three sets of wheel locks to make it more difficult to steel the wheels.
Or just don’t live in a third world blue city. That sounds like a more sane option than buying 5 different sets of wheels locks… 😂
Wheel locks do absolutely nothing to stop thievery lol. All they need to do is have a slightly larger socket than the wheel lock, and hammer it on.
It'll have enough friction to break loose when using a breaker bar.
Wheel locks only delay the thieves about 30 seconds.

The point is to delay or deter them. If all the lug nuts on the vehicle are wheel locks, they’re hopefully more likely to skip your vehicle for something easier.
Too bad you can't defend your property anymore. Oh well, I'll just wait for the tipping point.

You will see those wheels on an older crv pretty soon . I’m from NYC here I see in the week about 4 cars with wheels gone . They be hitting the CRV. Toyota Highlander Acura SUV . And accords and civics . But from what I noticed CRV and Highlanders are like hot bread over here . There’s no guarantees that wheels locks will prevent it but at least you should put 2 set of locks . Maybe that will discourage them and move on to the next easy victim. Be safe people that’s the norm these days .
I'd get 5 lock sets, one for each stud

There’s a video of a Canadian cop saying to leave car keys near the front door that way if someone breaks in, the keys are easily accessible to them so the thieves won’t have to go farther inside your house to find them. Soon enough Canada will be like the UK where you can only use equal force to stop burglars, and probably get sued and arrested anyway.

When I lived there back in 77., if you park at some spot like Temple U main campus, the full OEM full hub cap theft ($100.00) value in 10 minutes was a normal. The police will not take a report since the answer was "we did not do the hub cap". The broken in by cracking in the side door window (cost $75.00) for hanging ordainment that cost $5.00 was also very common back in the 70's.
They were priests, so their ordainment was hanging.
Back like 10 years ago there was a Auto Glass place who hired a person to break car windows to make money off the neighborhood cars and the owner was caught. it can happen anywhere. BEWARE. it's happening here in the NYC Bronx area.
Bottom line. Theft punishment need to be tougher. For theft like this it should be one year in jail mandatory and payback the cost to the victim. The effect on the victims is money, stress, and could cost them their jobs. It should not be taken lightly. If you think this is harsh. You are part of the problem. In my opinion.

i work at a honda dealer, never seen a tow truck drive dumb enough to tow in a car like that before. they make these narrow temporary wheels with multiple bolt patterns just for this purpose.

It's happening because young drivers are crashing and the insurance can't find OEM replacements because manufacturers don't make replacement parts for the first year. Or someone can't afford new tires so they steal them. Get wheel locks and an aftermarket alarm with a tilt sensor

They have to sell them somewhere. Maybe the Philly PD can stop cruising hookups on their phones for a little while and search for used Honda wheels and tires. Might get lucky and actually catch these guys.
The damage done goes well beyond the tires. And the tow operator is negligent too.
This last is laughing but the final bill for all this non-sense could lead to a total just for some wheels. If I were the insurer I would press charges for gross negligence leading to the loss of a vehicle and put them in jail for felonies.

It's easy to take off a lock. Hammer on a sacrificial socket on top of the lock and wrench it off. Adds maybe 5 seconds to the theft per wheel

Wheel theft on Honda's have been plagued in NYC for some time now. Its pretty common to see a Honda on milkcrates with the wheels gone. I've been told by NYPD that these wheels get shipped internationally (like Dominican Republic), end up in Corona chop shops, or get purchased by someone who wants to modify their 2005 Accord.
No matter where you live, if you own a Honda, wheel locks are essential!
Why tow trucks don't have 4 spare wheels for this types of situations is easily to put them back and not dragging the vehicle like that and making more damage

The best way to move the car is to actually bring 4 wheels, even if only those temporary ones and put them on the car, then tow it to the wheel/tire shop for proper replacement.

What a disgrace! People work hard to purchase a vehicle so they can get to work and lowlives steal car's wheels. We need harsher penalties for thieves.
Modern car rims go for a lot of money, they're easy to steal, and untraceable.

I had a Honda Accord 2000 visited my parents and out of EVERY CAR on the block. They stole my catalytic converter. Cop said it hadn’t happened in that area for some time. I get that it’s probably a huge coincidence, but damn it feels like it sucks to be a Honda owner lol
OMFG!!! You let them drag your car like that? Aww man, that's terrible. Just get some that fit for now and drive off. You only have to get 3 as 1 will be your spare. Go to the dealer, or junk yard, or anywhere to get any rims that fit and add tires from a cheap tire shop around the corner for now. Then over the next days you go to your insurance or just pay for new rims, etc... Of course this only helps if it happens to you again. I wish you knew. Don't move on flats, jack the car right where it is and take the wheel off and change it.
Exactly! Call a friend or an UBER to give you a lift to a junk yard. They have hundreds of those black steel wheel thrown around and it will cost you cheap! Take them back to the tow truck and they will put them on for you and you drive away. Not that hard.

Wheel locks need to be standard on all cars
There are three issues here.
First the stolen wheels and tires. Second, the damage caused by dropping the car on milk crates. And finally, the damage caused by loading the vehicle on a rollback.
The major damage was the way the door was crunched by being dropped on the milk crate. And that was not even mentioned in the story. A set of rolling wheels and tires from the salvage yard could well be "only" a few hundred dollars. And would get the car mobile again. But what was done to that door is many thousands of dollars.
BTW, jacking that car up to get replacement wheels installed, on the street is kind of dangerous. Even if you can get a jack under one corner to get it lifted, you are working in traffic. All it takes is one rubbernecker getting too close and you are in the hospital. And if someone taps the car while you have it up on a jack? Same thing. I can see a shop not wanting to do more than nominal repairs roadside. A driveway or parking lot, much safer.
Invest in some wheel locks. Problem solved

When you live in an area of higher crime you should have to pay more for insurance. That’s an incentive for the police to reduce crime, or leave the crime ridden area, demand your lawmakers do something.

Thieves have no respect anymore. When I was growing up and the wheels were stolen off my dad's car, the thieves had enough respect to put the car on cinder blocks.
