    One thing that impressed me about the MD88 series was the climb performance. Its also one of the best looking airliners ever made. Wish it could return to the skies!

      I have flown on N937DL numerous times and taught the MD88/90 for a total of 14 years. I had one year teaching the Boeing 777-200ER/LR before I was dragged back to the Mad Dogs. The maximum pitch attitude is 18°-20° nose up or not less than V2+10 until we clean up the wing to accelerate to 250K (or published) below 10K MSL. Max bank angle until cleanup is 25° and then it is switched to 15° for passenger comfort. With regards to "full reverse thrust", Delta set a maximum of .3 EPR due to the reversers can cause rudder blanking and on a slippery runway (icing conditions at LaGuardia years ago) can cause loss of directional control. I taught the Boeing 737-200 and it is a sweetheart. I haven't taught the NG series. I have taught the Boeing 777-200ER/LR and they WERE my best flying girlfriends. As for Airbus, my MD88/90 fleet captain convinced me to go with him to the Airbus A220...Delta's newest jet. It is, by far, the sweetest jet I've ever taught. Having flown on the all of our Airbus aircraft, I have come to enjoy the roominess, the speed, the quiet, the lower cabin pressure that Airbus provides. The little A220 is the most fun jet I've ever taught and is my all time favorite flying girlfriend.

      @William W. Campbell-Shepherd IX The A320 is easily capable of 4000fpm initial climb out , but that would be highly unusual. Climb rate is generally held to about 2000fpm, that is unless a steep climb is required out of airports located mountainous terrain.

    • @ual1009
      @ual1009 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      William W. Campbell-Shepherd IX these days with almost empty airplanes those climb rates are normal. I fly the CRJ 7/9 and routinely get 4,000 fpm plus since they’re so empty.

      Even my late uncle (who was a proud engineer at Boeing-and helped to design the Boeing 777 back in the day) found the MD80 (despite it being an adversary of Boeing) to be a favorite of his for flying in! He told me about how he loved the size of it (the long and narrow fuselage) and especially the fact that it took off at such a quick and steep angle! He found it to be far more of a thrill to fly in than any of the competing Boeing planes (such as the Boeing 737, etc)!

    My dad once wondered how the MD80 with its wings near the back could take off nose first as he thought it’d be nose heavy. The answer to that is that the horizontal stabilizers are actually upside down airfoils (and have elevators that extend up and not down) so they act like anti-wings and push the tail down so the nose goes up. This isn’t only true for the MD80 but it’s true for most planes!

    • @cpunut

      Speaking as a pilot, that's 100% true

    • @Zickcermacity

      So if an MD80 were in a circumstance were the only means of avoiding a midair collision were to dive, how would she do so?

    • @mysock351C
      @mysock351C ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, as an engineer, this is mostly true 😉. But in all seriousness the real solution is the center of mass when the plane is fairly evenly loaded is generally designed to coincide with the center of lift (CoL) from the wings. Its neither nose or tail heavy, but rather the two sides of the "see-saw" if you will, are balanced by the weight of the engines in the rear and the mass of fuselage ahead of the wings. This is very necessary as if you had to use the horizontal stabilizer to "push" it would greatly reduce its control authority since its being used to prop up the other side of the plane. (Edit: If it really _was_ nose-heavy as it appears, it would be all but impossible to take off.) In level flight, the horizontal stabilizer is more or less just used to trim the plane so it stays level when no control inputs are present, and this is done via a jack-screw inside, hence the name "horizontal stabilizer."

    • @mysock351C
      @mysock351C ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Zickcermacity Well that's easy. You just upgrade all the fat passengers to first class. After all, isn't that what the fat-acceptance movement is all about? At least their weight won't go to _waist_ any longer! She'll dive just like she should in the event of an emergency! 🤣

    • @ChrisZoomER

    I guess the poor passengers were crushed all together with this steep climb ..

    • @jonahair747
      @jonahair747  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably. That’s one of the best features about a DC-9/Maddogs - Steep climbs that push you into your seat. This ain’t no modern flying piece of junk that takes off with a slow & boring pitch to 10 degrees

    I think spirits planes looked better before they painted the planes to look like a phuking banana

      Spirit was great until they got a new CEO and replaced the DC-9/MD-80 fleet with scarebus’. Spirit quickly turned into the “McDonald’s” of the airline industry
