Min. Chan has implemented so many policy adjustments in Education in the 3 short years as minister in MOE. Damn hardworking!❤
Well-said, Minister Chan! You've articulated a very logical and common sense approach to education and discipline to students. It's so important that common sense approach is adhere instead of subscribing to some illogical woke teaching philosophies we see elsewhere.
There are still many level-headed people in Sg. As long as what he said makes sense and is for the well-being of everyone, he may win more votes for being frank and direct in addressing problems before they get worse.
Alright, let’s add another layer of spicy wisdom from Minister Chan. Not only are teachers not your personal on-demand service providers, but let’s be real clear here-they’re not here to "serve" parents like waiters taking orders at a fancy restaurant. You don’t stroll into a parent-teacher meeting and say, "I'll take a side of extra homework updates with a dash of weekly reports, please!" Nope, not happening. Minister Chan says it loud and proud: Teachers deserve **respect**-they're educators, not customer service reps at your local mall. You can't expect them to jump when you snap your fingers or answer emails like they're competing for the world's fastest response time award. Their priority is the students, not meeting every parent’s demand like they’re fulfilling an Amazon order. So, parents, take a deep breath, step back, and remember: teaching isn’t a service industry, and your kid’s teachers deserve the same respect you’d give any other professional. Just because you can’t request extra fries with your feedback doesn’t mean they’re not doing an amazing job! 2:53
I think this is a right move. I have frequently heard from students that "you are paid to teach me, we pay school fees to attend lessons" to their teachers. I am glad that the minister is addressing this issue. I hope that he can further evaluate the use of feedback in higher education as such feedback sessions has been used unresponsibly as an weapon against teachers.
The teachers should also be treated with respect by the schools and should not overtax them with lots of work and messaging about work matters after school hours.
Earlier we also hear "all schools are good school" but how many really believe in this? How much effort needed to prove it correct? The main core of issues is not to add work to teachers but change the attitudes of students and all stakeholders
Min Chan is the best Minister of Education. He really cares for both the children and educators. I support him that we should not entertain or embolden unreasonable parents.

But i think he's alright, we need more MPs like him who do the right thing, even if it makes him less popular. People like him see the bigger picture, we may not always see the big picture and it's a tough job to balance the people's wants with what the country needs. I hope he'll continue to make the right decisions and stay this way because it's the right thing to do.
The elephant in the room is often NOT the parents but the principals that set their school culture and burden teachers with many after school hours text about “urgent” work. I think minister needs to know that.
Maybe we should rethink this as school leaders are not well trained in planning ? Or they have strong beliefs in keeping up with ever increasing kpi? Send them to skill future for time management course or priority setting course. A person only has 24 hours a day.
instead of learning to plan better, leadership just make it someone else's problem. When the workload become unbearable, and the teacher can not, the manager just punish others for their mistakes.
True. Even in this AI era the pricipal (who mostly are boomer) demand the teacher to do all administrative task manually. Type manually instead of improving their system.
4 day week for teachers, schedule in a way that each teacher only attends school for 4 days a week to make it a 5 day school week. Scrap the daily morning assembly. Make it once a week
Some actions by teachers make parents feel that they can communicate with them more. They use apps like Class Dojo that makes messaging easy. Some teachers also text parents using Whatsapp which makes parents think it's okay to Whatsapp them. And when one teacher is easily contactable after school hours, some parents will think that all teachers should be as easy to contact. They start comparing the teachers and can rate some teachers as bad because they don't provide their phone numbers. So, if this needs to be stopped, teachers need to standardise their communication practices. Teachers should perhaps not text and call and breathe down parents' neck too much when kids don't do well or do their homework. It shouldn't become parents' homework unless the parents express great willingness to step in. Teachers also need to adjust their practices.
Some highlights: - Parents who escalate school issues unnecessarily and overstep boundaries with teachers are a minority, but they waste time and divert resources away from the wider school community - Bypassing the school's leadership, and instead getting a minister to bring pressure on the school, is something that Mr Chan said he "cannot tolerate" - "I trust my principals, I trust my teachers. I always tell them that I'm not going to respond to this, because the more I respond to this, the more emboldened that individual will be to bypass (the system)" - Mr Chan said that perhaps now parents have a "natural tendency" to want to do more for their children, whereas in the past, parents "generally trust the teachers more". - He added: "Today, I think a lot of people feel that, 'Well, I'm also highly educated, then I should have a view on certain things.'" "Sometimes in trying to solve every problem for them, we actually deprive them of that learning opportunity." - Beyond creating entitled children or parents, he said such a mindset would have serious implications for the teaching profession. - if parents keep bailing their children out of situations, such as asking for a spelling list on their behalf or to review their PSLE scores, children will not be encouraged to be responsible or learn life skills. I have tried to contact school leadership, to no avail. I am unable to trust a system which does not even share the output of exams. Do not complain, do not ask any questions, do not have an opinion, keep yourself away.
You are sitting there and complaining about the parents who care for their children, unjustified or not. The solution is surely not to criticise having an opinion, or worrying about what happens in school.
