My son was from the G.E.P. His twin brother wasn't. There is a difference in their abilities. However, the non-G.E.P. son is the Lee Kuan Yew gold medallist. In life, if we are self-motivated and diligent, it pays off. When they joined the workforce, what matters a great deal is being passionate in what they do, being humble to learn as green horns...Thank God for Singapore's MOE.

This is probably my favourite local podcast. I've watched it ever since Steve was the only host and I always appreciate him daring to ask the challenging questions (in an appropriate way) at the right moments. Good sharing of different perspectives about important issues. Relatively short episodes compared to other long-form podcasts but no time is wasted. Crispina is probably still learning but yeah, Steve I feel is clear and concise in his presentation and he nails the timing while not disrupting the flow of the convo - that takes skill and experience.

There are many good and excellent teachers. They deserve the gratitude and praises. But some of them are too stressed up or concerned about ranking to understand and care for pupils not in their control, and in tbe process they damage the children. Sad but it happens. Parents have to shoulder and repair the damage. Is ideal that every pupil is cared and nurtured to be his best.

Schools have brand recognition and heritage. A Gucci bag is desirable not because of the workmanship but because of the social status and bragging rights.
To remove that mindset. Consider something drastic. Rename and rebrand all schools.

We need to assess whether our kids are fit for study or not. Whether they value their neighborhood friends or not. They may drift apart and be demoralised if they enter a good school, far from home without familiar friends. My friend was lucky to enter a good school, got no friends and in the end she dropped out because she did not feel she belongs there.

I wonder why the podcast didn’t include current / past students from the GEP in the interview to ask about their experience in the program. For some gifted and 2e/3e kids (and parents), the GEP is a lifeline to and much needed Avenue of support and learning, especially if parents are not able to send their kids to all sorts of enrichment.

Schools have been the sieve for the more academically inclined. That was and still is mostly correct for nation building.
Now, and from now on, the variety of talents have to be tapped for sustaining nation-built SG. And also because a relative over-supply of academically-inclined people has been produced thanks to the fundamentally sound education systems. More diverse young learners would be happier than more brainy ones. All rounders would thrive together with specific-talent people.

Both our daughters started their primary education in a neighbourhood school, one just made it to a neighbourhood secondary school express stream, the other to Hwa Chong Humanities program. From my personal experience, this change will benefit all the kids, at all levels, even for my daughter who went to HCI.

    How get more teachers:
    1. Reduce admin work
    2. Need a separate discipline team which includes retired teachers, retired army officer, part time professional athletes and social workers.
    3. Provide long service awards or long holiday break after certain years of service
    4. Work out a balance why so teachers are still moon lighting as a tutor and earn more while others are wholeheartedly dedicated to teaching.
    5. Provide more training opportunity for them to catch up new teaching methodologies.
    6. Make it clear you are recruiting teachers or educator

It is not true that sg cannot get quality teachers. The reason why many moe teachers have left and new ones don't want to join is because sg teachers are given too many administration works to do instead of doing teaching (their passion). Hope that moe will interview all past teachers who have left and future teachers to better support and retain them.

In the first place, the government originated an inflexible education system, brand recognition & heritage that brought all the side effects & social faux pas.
Mr Chan, acknowledge the "ownership" that these didn't come out of nowhere including the soaring property market that parents had to pay to have their children educated under the influence.
By the way, are practices of the INORDINATELY still existing within schools & MOE -
In the 1980s, my schoolmate was expelled for intimacy with a male teacher (maybe they kissed, we didn't know the details) but the teacher stayed on. I believe she was the only daughter to two working parents.
My cousin, a Malaysian whose parents seeked education for him in Singapore was expelled from St. Joseph's Institution for just having cut-class & called a teacher "bitch". My dad pleaded with the Principal & MOE. A brusque snap-head-off was what dad experienced tenaciously. With disregard that the boy made through every exam, a bright kid & never known to anyone as surly. The parents were working class people with 3 other younger ones at home in Malaysia. The potential prospect of a bright boy ripped to shreds, ruined completely.

I have seen multiple fellow parents jump to the top every time their children say something. My kids rolled their eyes and said teachers explain clearly in class and others were not listening....
Teachers end up in the principal office explaining to the different groups of parents. So that they can go home and explain to their child. Furthermore my kids found out about the complaint simply because teachers had to explain in class again.
Parents really please teach children to focus and the listening skills very needed for lessons that's all not all this extra lessons....cause actually most of them already have the min🎉dset that school work isn't as important as tuition work....

    Key takeaways from this:
    1. Min Chan is able to explain his ideas well. He can make a complex subject and make it easy for the layman to understand. An intelligent and humble minister. Very sayang that he did not become the PM.
    2. Female presenter is very annoying because she keeps interrupting everyone, even the minister. Her voice is also very loud and irritating. A presenter needs to modulate her voice. Please learn from Steve Chia.
    3. Love Steve Chia. Always asks the right questions and at the right time. Never interrupting and yet able to get his thoughts across. He never speaks over his guests.

IMHO the recent moves in education are all wrong on multiple levels. Take this recent GEP move for example, it defeats the first principles of why the GEP was established in the first place; to provide these Special Needs children a safe and secure environment where they can learn. The cynic in me says that all the recent moves in education are populist and made to counter opposition narratives about education and widening socio-economic gaps; and not really for the benefit of children and the future of Singapore education as a whole. I hope they can prove me wrong... :(
