It is true that for Singapore, Malaysian and Indonesian immigrants are preferred because they can more easily fit into our culture here. The locals are also very familiar with them as our neighbours and more ready to welcome them permanently. Not that we oppose other foreigners staying in Singapore, but cultural dilution is a real thing, and it will be a pity if Singapore's cultural identity gets lost within a 100 years of our country's history. A lil idealistic. Money is one of the biggest reasons why people spilt up. Yeah, it’s okay to rent a small place, using money for that. But if the guy earns not enough, they end up fighting, or perhaps u may have enough to rent a place but the guy isn’t around enough due to working multiple streams for such money. As a Hong Kong person myself I gonna say the guy that the lady dated probably not too interest in the relationship. Most of the Hong Kong guys will offer to pick up the girl or take them home unless they are not interest. Just saying bye in the MTR somewhat indicate the person just didn't care much about the relationship.
Generally “Paiseh” loosely means “to stand on ceremony.” & “Not to impose” It is related to one’s comfort and politeness levels around others. Especially in social settings. For eg: 1) a friend comes over to visit. We are about to eat and the host might say “please don’t feel paiseh, just sit and eat whatever we have (as friends / family) and enjoy a good time.” 2) Another context / situation : I dropped my ice cream on the floor and people were around. It dirtied the floor for others. So I feel “paiseh” and bad for having imposed on others with my slip up. 3) A guy can also feel “paiseh” to ask a girl out cos he is too shy. He likes her but doesn’t know how to approach her, so feels shy to “impose” on her in asking for a date. It stems from awareness of others through his own lower self esteem as a man. 4th context : I bought something new and it didn’t fit. So as not to bother the store, I feel “paiseh” to return it. I don’t want to trouble others so I keep mum. I am paiseh to create a fuss over the return. Different contexts above using the word “paiseh” which is in Hokkien - a Chinese dialect. I stand corrected on the above examples to explain “paiseh”.

Totally understand it's hard for ppl who do not know Cantonese living in HK. But it's definitely a fun experience to try live in different places to experience something different.
After watching this episode, i found some similarities among Indonesians like cheerfulness, open minded, dare to express own thinking, nevermind just do it spirit, lets work it out together and softer charater to say no. True enough Indonesians tend to stick within their own group and speak Bahasa, which I do understand, but i find it hard to mingle with. Anyway, live your life to the fullest while you are still single as things will change after you get married and with children, worry about mortgage, utility bills due dates, more expenses or higher living cost, saving getting lesser, more workloads, difficulties to have work life balance, especially when you are into your forties where you are in a senior role. Nevertheless, welcome to Singapore and do upgrade yourself like taking up another part time master degree or sit for professional exams as you will have higher chance to get PR and citizenship.
As a Cantonese speaking ethnic Chinese American, I definitely seem to be influenced by the HK archetype, even though I have never lived there. I feel many other overaeas Cantonese are in the same boat.
This interview almost means nothing cause, as she stated, this is based on a sample rate of one. The differences could also come from a different phase of her life. The Jarkarta bf was since high school while the hk bf was after she graduated, meaning when she was 22 or so. Could also tell she's very inexperienced and child-like as she was giggling like a school girl when he asked her about dating life. I wish I had that innocence.

Living separately until the new apartment is ready is pragmatic, indeed. That's even more pragmatic than dropping you at the nearest MRT station IMO. In Indonesia, people do differentiate between real close friends & friends friends. We're just more subtle about it, so people don't feel like an outsider.
The problem with that is I am never sure when I can count on an Indo friend when I need their help or they were just being polite when I am interacting with them.

Charming lady she is. And very politically correct too when she recounted her experience with the Hong Kong guy. No offence but I think one has to have a really big heart to have a romantic relationship with a typical Hong Kong man. Heard so many stories from my friend and family member who have them as partners. They can be so very blunt and insensitive to the point of being insulting.
9:50 This is a lie. You can safely use public wifi, and there is no security risk. Nowadays every normal website/service uses HTTPS protocol. So if someone will want to track you, they will get just random encrypted data, what is basically a noise.
Can’t compare HK to SG in terms of place of interest. One is a gateway to an entire continent via high speed train, we are just a small island smaller than any of their city.
She has such a bubbly personality man... Speaking of her being minority in Jakarta and majority in Singapore, does she know unlike Singapore, Jakarta is very diverse and is one of few cities in South East Asia with no ethnic group majority along with Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Yes and she is buddist as well... Probably grew up in conservative chinese-medan area like Pluit, Muara Karang (North Jakarta). I’m Southern and she doesn’t represent all of us... Jakarta is culturally vibrant city.
Wdym jakarta is very diverse, just a simple google of jakarta ethnicity would prove that wrong. Well i mean it’s kinda subjective, but yeah chindos are still a minority there at 6%

Well, 3 years dating but both of you not thinking about marriage mainly due to differences encountered during the date.... Malaysian Chinese guy I think they even more accommodative and mix up few Malay speaking, grown up from less pressure living environment....
Time 11:08, Mickey laughed at the fact that couples timed their wedding according to when their BTO flat is ready, aka able to live together after getting married. But then, if the BTO is not ready and they lived separately after the wedding, this is a no-no for her. Hmmmmm...... what is she saying? I don't get her point. I also think that it's best for couples to live together after getting married so timing the wedding to coincide with the BTO seems like the right thing to do. It doesn't mean that the couples get married only because the flat is ready.
Her point is that she cannot accept living a part after getting married if they don't time it exactly with the recent delays. If they are living together, definitely not with either in-laws. It must be their own space aka rental apartments. Timing BTO in the past isn't a problem as there aren't much delays with the flats, at least not in the months. It is due to COVID that delays of >1 year happened. Additionally, the culture of getting a BTO first before proposal in SG is also weird. Although now a days most couples proposed before applying for BTO, in the past many don't due to them being too young to afford ring + proposal plans. It is better now as younger generations are usually supported by their parents.
What's so hard to understand? She said she'd rather spend money on rent so she can live with her hubby alone (until flat ready), rather than save that money and stay apart. She prefers a normal married life over money, like almost everyone else in the world does lol
@@zhen86 it's a cultural difference, created by the bto policy. In most of the world ppl would simply not consider letting housing decide wedding plans. For non SG ppl it will never make sense, while for SG it's common. As she said many times, SG ppl are too "practical" with such things compared to other countries. There's no right or wrong here, just different
Sporeans are frogs in a well. The weird things like living apart till BTO is not even done in our parents time. Instead of realising how bizarre we are because of terrible policies, we criticize others for having a normal life. My BTO was an empty field for 2 years in the 5 yrs it took to collect the keys. It's a deliberate delay to prop up the resale market, so that desperate couples have no choice but to buy resale.

Thank God for the subtitles
Not God, it’s my team 😁💪
Very insightful interview.
Generally “Paiseh” loosely means “to stand on ceremony.” & “Not to impose”
It is related to one’s comfort and politeness levels around others. Especially in social settings.
For eg: 1) a friend comes over to visit. We are about to eat and the host might say “please don’t feel paiseh, just sit and eat whatever we have (as friends / family) and enjoy a good time.”
2) Another context / situation : I dropped my ice cream on the floor and people were around.
This lady is attractive. I am a Hong Konger. I find it difficult to believe that she only had one boy friend in Hong Kong in 8 years.
yaa! how come yaa :(( wish I dated more.
@@mickmokkk No lah, too many red flags around! It's better to keep yourself safe and find the right one when the time comes.
@@mickmokkk 1 boyfriend in 8 years is okay. I only had 1 girlfriend in 21 years! After that it was a 6 year gap before I met my wife [she's Indonesian].
Comon Seriously as if she is going to admit what she got up to in HK alone.
maybe 1 boyfriend but many flings? many "non-official" boyfriends? there are girls who will say things like less than 6 months not counted etc. lol. she's not gonna admit how wild she might have been.
Shes chinese not your Muslim Indonesian with extremists tendencies
As a Cantonese speaking ethnic Chinese American, I definitely seem to be influenced by the HK archetype, even though I have never lived there. I feel many other overaeas Cantonese are in the same boat.
She seems lovely and fun to be around
This interview almost means nothing cause, as she stated, this is based on a sample rate of one.
The differences could also come from a different phase of her life. The Jarkarta bf was since high school while the hk bf was after she graduated, meaning when she was 22 or so.
Could also tell she's very inexperienced and child-like as she was giggling like a school girl when he asked her about dating life. I wish I had that innocence.
30:42 onwards till the end, I totally agree with her views on this.
She such a lovely lady!
Hi Max , I enjoyed watching yr video .
Paisai means ‘ embarrass in making a minor mistake / jokingly way of covering a mistake or
Rejecting a outing ‘
Example
-Pai Sai , I see wrongly the exam date
-I cannot go out today , pai Sai lah
-I need to shit . Pai Sai
16:18 I think it depends on the person. For those who have been here for 20 years or more, their “Indonesian” social habits tend to fade, and they adapt more to the local culture.

Indonesia is a great country with great culture but as the minority most chinese have experience discriminatory act especially by the some govt official (worst if you live in regional town). This is one of the reason why the younger generation chinese who have the opportunity to study and live overseas choose to migrate.

wahhh mickey!!!
Is wahhh a Singaporean expression?
Living separately until the new apartment is ready is pragmatic, indeed. That's even more pragmatic than dropping you at the nearest MRT station IMO.
In Indonesia, people do differentiate between real close friends & friends friends. We're just more subtle about it, so people don't feel like an outsider.
The problem with that is I am never sure when I can count on an Indo friend when I need their help or they were just being polite when I am interacting with them.
She dare to date Hk men, very brave of her.

Omg❤, you are so cute and lovely dear Mickey lady
Charming lady she is. And very politically correct too when she recounted her experience with the Hong Kong guy. No offence but I think one has to have a really big heart to have a romantic relationship with a typical Hong Kong man. Heard so many stories from my friend and family member who have them as partners. They can be so very blunt and insensitive to the point of being insulting.
She is such a lovely person!
9:50 This is a lie. You can safely use public wifi, and there is no security risk. Nowadays every normal website/service uses HTTPS protocol. So if someone will want to track you, they will get just random encrypted data, what is basically a noise.
She seems to be a very cheerful lady. Hopes she gets her PR.
*fingercrossed!!! thank youu
Australia is the best ❤
Agree!!! Singapore is “chop chop” get the job done.
Can’t compare HK to SG in terms of place of interest. One is a gateway to an entire continent via high speed train, we are just a small island smaller than any of their city.
Singapore is a gateway to the whole region of SE Asia through Changi airport
HK is far more interesting and the cultural prosperity is amazing ❤
She has such a bubbly personality man... Speaking of her being minority in Jakarta and majority in Singapore, does she know unlike Singapore, Jakarta is very diverse and is one of few cities in South East Asia with no ethnic group majority along with Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Exactly. Didn't talk about that
Yes and she is buddist as well... Probably grew up in conservative chinese-medan area like Pluit, Muara Karang (North Jakarta). I’m Southern and she doesn’t represent all of us... Jakarta is culturally vibrant city.
She's talking about religion, Jakarta is majority Muslim while she's Buddhist
Idk if she meant it like that. Only 30% Singaporean considered as Buddist though... So she's still one of the minority.
Wdym jakarta is very diverse, just a simple google of jakarta ethnicity would prove that wrong. Well i mean it’s kinda subjective, but yeah chindos are still a minority there at 6%
She's so vibrant and love her energy. If she's available, I'll be interested. 😂
Get in line, mate.
Lol
Wow Mickey you are hot! Bet you gonna get an upswing in your love life after this interview.
you can compare when getting different experience but do not expect the guy have many gf date experience too, especially first timer. Well, 3 years dating but both of you not thinking about marriage mainly due to differences encountered during the date.... Malaysian Chinese guy I think they even more accommodative and mix up few Malay speaking, grown up from less pressure living environment....
Not many Hk or Singaporean guys are willing to go to Indonesia unless they don't mind the big cultural difference there.
Such an intelligent and lovely girl.... sadly, Mum said no, I can't date her😮💨
18:43 hits hard
@@Udisared well Singapore is Small. a train ride from east to west is 2 hour only.

@@alfianmelodic Oh, I find it especially interesting when you, yourself, are neither Chinese, female, and Buddhist (or any other minority), but you have the audacity to invalidate her feeling as a minority in Indonesia, DUDE. You said that your friend is not like her and not just one person? How many then? Are your friends the representatives of the minority in Indonesia? Even then, why is your friend's feeling valid and hers is not? How do you know that she never tried to blend in with others? How can you be certain that it's just an "individual problem" based on this video and your own perception of your friends feelings only? Do you live with your minority friends 24/7 since you were born, so you know exactly what they are feeling inside out as a minority in Indonesia?
In case you missed it, she is, in fact, a minority in Indonesia, and she has the right to feel as such in Indonesia. And she also never said that she's not doing fine. She (or even all of the minorities in Indonesia) can do fine, live well, but at the same time feels like she doesn't belong in her home country because she is a minority there.
