這首歌歷史可以追溯到16-18世紀的奴隸制度，是當時流傳於奴隸之間的歌。歌詞參照了聖經的故事：在獅子坑裏但以理，鯨魚肚子裏的約拿，烈火窯中的沙得拉、米煞、亞伯尼從皆因著信心得救。歌詞亦提及「流奶與蜜糖」的應許之地迦南，反映當時奴隸渴望從奴役中釋放和獲得自由。
The history of the “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel” song lyrics dates back to the Slave System between the 1600’s to 1800’s. The song was sung by slaves with reference to the Biblical stories of Daniel in the Lion’s Den, Jonah from a whale’s belly and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from the fiery furnace. They were all saved by the Lord because of their unwithering faith. The lyrics also references to Canaan, the promised land “flowing with milk and honey”, reflecting the slaves’ yearning for their deliverance from slavery and journey towards freedom.
