Channel record indeed, this was a fun way to pass the day. Loved the analysis of the music on the whiteboard as well.
Damn, it doesn't look like Captain Wasea's theme was in the list here for ME2.
@@mechanomics2649 It's part of the Samara suite. Check the end..
Thanks so much for the timestamps! ☺️
"Huh, no part 1 in the title? Wow is the Trilogy OST really THAT Short?" was my first thought
Good lord Dan one sitting, congrats
I woke up this morning thinking dang I’m gonna miss the first part of this because of work and when I got back you were still at it you madman. Much respect
For the record, the Mass Effect 2 "character themes" aren't really character themes per se, but mission themes - most characters have a mission where you recruit them to your cause, and all of them have a mission where you help them deal with a personal issue or conflict. The game uses a dynamic music system that transitions between different pieces of music depending on context - one for exploring, for example, a different one when there's danger nearby, yet another when you're in combat, and so on - and each character track on the OST is a mix of the various musical elements used in that character's missions.
Massive respect for doing this all in one sitting while keeping a smile on your face and staying professional.
im gonna have to watch this in multiple parts, but damn, this is basically an endurance stream.
Good Run, Dan.
"That was Lazarus!" This is precisely why I think what you wrote down as "Lazarus" is actually the main theme of Mass Effect that came from main theme 1 for ME1.
You're crazy for doing the whole thing in 1 session lol
Hell yeah, Mass Effect!
I've watched this whole stream like 5 times now, so I figured I'd leave a comment to help the algorithm! Amazing vod and great teaching! Love it so much and love this game!
I spent about a week and a half listening to this whole stream, and wow, congratulations on your longest stream yet!
There were lots of highlights, but near the end I'd say I loved your comments on the I Will Watch Over Those Who Live On track - the way it starts with the protagonist's theme, then slowly loses parts of itself along the way. It definitely confirms my theory on that particular ending (one of four) and what happens if you decide to go down that path.
Thank you for all the hard work!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this, this trilogy is so underrated! Liked and subbed!
Respect for doing this non-stop for 7 hours straight.
Some context for why ME1 is so thematically connected while ME3 barely was:
ME1 had basically 2 composers, Jack Wall being the lead. They didnt have much time with the soundtrack so you can imagine all the things from the previous tracks were still fresh in their mind. That and ME1 is main story wise rather short.
ME2 had way more time, people and resources for the soundtrack and the game itself had a larger focus on the characters you pick along the way.
ME3 didnt have Jack Wall or a lead composer for that matter, as well as fewer composers and less time. The studio simply set the rules, the composers did their best and the studio picked what they liked best. So there were multiple reuses of ME1 and ME2 tracks to compensate.
Late to this party but would 100% support you covering the Dark Star Lounge with your guitar added!
You are a legend for doing this! Well done, man!
6:42:47 He felt the defeat right there, without playing the game.
oh this one is going to be special. Mass Effect's soundtrack is an adventure.
4:45:29. They're a combination of character themes and the themes for the character's mission. In ME2 you get squadmates by completing "recruitment" missions for them, then you must gain their loyalty through "loyalty missions". What you're hearing at the beginning is essentially the character's theme, but what follows is music that plays during that squadmate's respective recruitment and loyalty missions.
Working my way through this vod but I'd like to say you were very close with The Thorian being evil zombie ghosts and all that lol. "The Thorian, also called Species 37, is an ancient sentient plant at least fifty thousand years old - its ability to hibernate for thousands of years makes its real age impossible to guess. The Thorian is a unique creature with mind-controlling and telepathic abilities, and a massive sensory network. It releases spores into the air that allow the Thorian to control those who inhale them, using pain to control their behaviour. These 'thralls' then tend to the Thorian and obey its will." It can also produce "corpse-like humanoids with long claws and no noticeable eyes" called Thorian Creepers.
Boy, there aren't a lot of beginnings in games that throw you into it quite like Mass Effect 2. What a masterclass in sequel development.
What? The Thorian is not a bug! It's a plant-based lifeform that releases spores to take control of organics. This is a survival response, not a malevolent one. Though, it is a boss fight, so take that as you will.
The Criminal Element (which I assume is in reference to the crime in the Wards) isn't directly related to Noveria. If you try to make the connection, it's kind of a lot of dots to connect considering which "criminal element" are you talking about? Fist's men? Saren's assassins? The Shadow Broker's men? The weapon's dealer? Renegade Chorban? lol.
Yeah, I think the 1, b3, 2 is a leitmotif for Saren. In the track "Saren" it has the same thing but different style. Saren (a person (alien)) has a base on Virmire (a planet) (hence Saren's Base) You finally battle Saren for the first time there.
"These are long compared to the first one" yeah, well, that's what happens when you have very well done missions that aren't lifeless and empty. As someone mentioned, most of these are missions to either recruit a particular person or do their loyalty mission. Very curated (positive in my book). So much so that I can picture where we are in the mission relative to the music being played at any moment. It's also contextual (combat vs. exploring). As far as Thane goes, as Jacob puts it "...a mercenary. An assassin is just a precise mercenary."
5:09:18 Impressive, you're spot on about being in a different universe (not really, but a completely different place than the main game as you set on for the final mission in the game) and thus explaining the shift in the music!
I just started the vod and the ME1 theme gave me goosebumps. I gotta play these games again, man
Holy, 7 hours and half of livestream..
I wasn't looking for this video. But somehow I trapped myself for a solid hour here.
You, you absolutely nailed what the song Thorian was about haunted bad guy, zombies. Whoever responded first mixed up the enemy types. here’s a brief description of what it is. The Thorian, also called Species 37, is an ancient sentient plant at least fifty thousand years old - its ability to hibernate for thousands of years makes its real age impossible to guess. The Thorian is a unique creature with mind-controlling and telepathic abilities, and a massive sensory network. It releases spores into the air that allow the Thorian to control those who inhale them, using pain to control their behaviour. These 'thralls' then tend to the Thorian and obey its will. You even said it might be ghostly, and at the end of the mission you speak to being that it had possessed to use as its avatar, and you have the ability to free or kill it real spooky.
It's a shame that the OSTs of the DLCs aren't included. When will the reaction come?
There are bits and pieces included. Farewell and Into the Inevitable (Citadel DLC) and all of Extended Cut's OST are included. Weirdly enough Afterlife, Dark Star and Eternity are included too despite not being on the OST, but Flux/Chora's Den from ME1 and Purgatory from ME3 aren't. Seems very random.
@@Omega4Productions what is with shadow broker DLC and overlord DLC? i didn't hear the OSTs.
@@archangel9231 They’re not included for whatever reason. Neither is BDTS from ME1, Kasumi and Arrival from ME2, or Omega, Leviathan and most of Citadel from ME3.
Dan turning into the pepesilvia meme by the 6.5 hour mark lol
Oh, I never caught Saren's leitmotif in the middle of Legion (I'm surprised you didn't catch it). Which makes sense contextually as it shows up right before the character, Legion, is visually introduced. Legion is a geth. And whom did Saren lead in ME1? The geth.
I just noticed, what you call the Lazarus theme I'd say is actually ME1's (or maybe Mass Effect in general) theme. Because it wouldn't make sense, really, to callback to the Lazarus Project at the ending scene of this game. Also, that theme is played throughout all of Mass Effect. 1, 2, b3, 4, 3b, 4, b7. Suicide Mission also reflects it: "oh, I heard that before". ME1's main theme (which is pretty much the Mass Effect theme in general).
I'd call that main theme 2 (ME1) Normandy's theme.
Alexander Evans is that one person that always has to let people know that he knows what's going on. But I guess you gotta have someone literally doubles the chat activity.
A Future for the Krogan sounds like it's got segments of the Mass Effect theme also: 1, 2, b3.
Chat: "...reapers who are behind Cerberus." What? No.
Favorite piece? Probably Vigil. Neat part about this piece is that it's not just Vigil's theme, it's recurring theme when an original character from ME1 shows up in the proceeding games.
Nooo, he missed "Jack" between "The Normandy Attacked" and
"Legion", that was one of my favourites, actually have it downloaded too.
Understandable though, after like 5 hours of music, hah
Do they call you Dan the man? Oh, they do? Well deserved 😎
Lazarus mission was to revive shepard, something deemed impossible, even at such an advanced civilization. What shepard did during mass effect 3. Killing a reaper not once but twice (maybe 3, cant remember) and uniting the galaxy to fight at one single location. Thats nearly impossible for one man and woman. Which is why i feel lazarus chords are used for anything shepard does that exceeds the upper standards.
Oh looks like someones said it😂
Hey I don't know if you take requests like this, but the soundtrack to Deus Ex (2000) is iconic and another great one. It's my personal favourite game and game soundtrack, and a really fun one too
5:45:25
I feel like a reaction of the Kingdom Hearts OST could be fun but you might have to skip the songs that are just Vocal-less tracks of classic Disney songs (under the sea and This is Halloween as examples).
suicide mission is by far one of the best soundtracks ever composed, i will never forget the attack on the collector base and what was at stake, the tension was real... i really thought i would lose some of my crew mates (which i really learned to love throughout the games)
Was this counted as a single game in the voting or were the three games added up? 7 hours is loooong
Edit: I really like the addition of the whiteboard and the time spent on harmonic analysis etc. Good stuff!
Unless I missed it, some of my fav great tracks were not in this trilogy set he listened...like Infiltration one of more pump battle tunes in ME2 (and heard again near end of ME3) Also Kasumi, great two part with piano.
🤨
Great game, great soundtrack and great reaction!
Nobody tried to suggest Noita sountrack?
Maybe its too niche, definitely unique sounding though)
If nobody suggested it, then i suggest it...
my fav mass effect song is an unreleased track called "virmire assault"
You should try MCSM's OST, it's pretty good. Also, it's only available on TH-cam, and all of the songs are in order.
And now I really want you to listen ti Genshin Impact music. I know, I know, a lot of People very sceptical of this game, but the music is worth every single second you listen. Most of Genshin's OSTs is borderline masterpiece, and I really enjoy when People blindly listen them for the first time.
Anyway, sorry for my english, and hope someday I can whatch you analizing some of its bangers
Your name is Dan, you're into music theory, and you know some German. We have so much in common. lol.
Jack Wall and Sam Hulick did a bangin' job on the first two. Shame the third game, while still having good pieces, didn't get the same level of polish.
Unfortunately the trilogy is nowhere near as thematically dense or connected as I would have liked, musically speaking. A lot of the music is comprised of isolated, contextual pieces rather than a bunch of intelligently used leitmotifs gluing the story together. None of it is bad, but multiple composers worked on this music, and so it feels a bit disjointed as a result. It’s not devoid of thematic continuity, but the moments when specific motifs do get reprised to great effect make me wish the entire thing was like that.
He usually does reactions in parts. Is this game special to him or he just had a lot of time to finish it in one go ?
lol
What ever happened to you reacting to actual music so many ACDC solos I used to love watching now it's gaming vids not interested at all
