First time I've seen this video. My Dad born and raised in Avalon. He got a new 88 row crop, and a plow from that gentleman in 1952. Gramma payed cash. Dad wanted a set of cultivators also but didn't have the money. He was watching my dad looking at them. He told dad to follow him. Showed him a used set for 1/4 of the price. Still painted. He gave an 18 year old a great deal. Thank you! Be safe
Very cool. My grandfather bought 2 brand new 880s and a 770. He was the pioneer of leasing out tractors to the canning companies. At the end of the canning crop season he would rent them out to farmers. Grandpa would get an 1850-1855 every fall to use. He was originally out of Clinton wi with his first dealership about 4 miles south of Avalon. The equipment sat in a lot south of town and the main office was downtown Clinton.
My Dad bought a new 1855 and 6 x 14 plow in the fall of 1969. I was in junior high when it came home, my older brother started plowing with it & about the 4th. round in a 100 acre field the hydraulics exploded out the side of the transmission under the cab on the left side. It went back to the dealer & they brought out a 200 Allis instead of our old 1850 to use. We finally got ours back by spring for spring work, by the end of spring time it was using about 1 gl. of oil every day. We took it back to the dealer & they put new sleeves & pistons in it because it was wore out. We got it back in time to cut silage that fall and did fall work with it and had to overhaul it again. they found an air leak between the air cleaner housing & the turbo sucking dirt. The tractor had the narrow cab & fender tanks on it, I got to spend a lot of time in it plowing, chisel plowing & anhydrous application. I was chisel plowing late one night with about 20 acres to be finished for fall when it lost oil press. I just shut it of and walked 2.5 mi. home at midnight. We went & got it after school the next day to bring it home. we pulled the pan & the block had split above nu. 3 main. We found another engine for it & kept it until Dad traded it for a 105 in about 1975 or 76. In the mean time Dad bought a 1070 Case which became the main tractor for several years. I drove the 1855 all through high school & loved it. we'd hook the chisel plow or the anhydrous bar on the 3 point & when you turned around on the ends it would carry the front end for 50 or 75 ft. when you pushed the throttle ahead (pretty cool when you're 15 or 16).
Great tractor, grew up next to Avalon Wi and knew the 'Turk' he passed away many years ago he would lease the tractors to the local canning company in the spring and get them back in the fall so there were a lot of used tractors in the area

We had two Whites that were leased by DelMonte Foods in the 70's. Then they were returned back to White and sold through the dealerships. One was a 78 105 that pulled a pea harvester, had 180hrs on it. The other one was a 79 155. It was used for tillage and had 560hrs. Bought them at Beatrice Ne
I live in Wi where alot of green beans and peas are harvested for processing. I have heard the reason they used so many Oliver's back in the day was their slow speed ability from the creeper drive option and the 2 or 3 speed shift allowed them to go less than the 1 mph the harvesters needed to operate at.
That’s neat. I have a 1650 I bought as a parts tractor that has creeper drive. I know when I had it running it was super slow. That was probably perfect for harvesting!

Dad came close to getting an 1855 at a farm sale and had the bid and the auctioneer discussed things with the seller and they reopened the bid and Dad would not bid anymore. The White was a great tractor and I wish that Oliver could be brought back.
Dad had an 1855 what fender fuel tanks made that tractor look awesome also had duels 8 hydraulic hookups out the back my most favorite tractor on the farm
I have an extra set of those spacers, I had two sets but I used one set on my D19 Allis to space the duals out. I also have a set of 38” centers, rims and tires off of a 1850. For me the front weights and wheel weights are the hardest thing to find around where I live
Great Info. Ill keep my eyes peeled for the Badger farm store. Saw an 1855 sell at auction a couple weeks ago $7500 average shape non oil cooler block. The new owner was loading it out. I joked with him a said " that tractor dosent have what most of them do" he said "yeah what" I replied " a patch in the block" He didn't appreciate my humor .There was a super 77 diesel and a1650 gas on face book last week priced right. Little south of you. Thought that's what your next video would be about.👍👍
Nice looking oliver. I like that lower step you got to make it easier for a old short fat man to climb up. Lol. I need something like that so I don’t have to struggle as much getting on.
That’s actually the factory step for a 2255 with a cab. Maibach sells them reproduction if you need one. They really make a difference to a fat man, I can promise that! 🤣🤣🤣
i am 54 and when i started hauling peas for canning when i was 19 the guy that pulled the pea viners had all oliver tractors he worked for a canning company. the compnay owned the viners and he owned the tractors. he had a lot of oliver 4 wheel drives that was in pickett wisconsin
That’s interesting!!! I think there were a lot of Oliver’s in use on factory farms like that. I have a 1650 with a creeper drive transmission that has a tag that says “Stokleys Van Camp” Thanks for the info!
That's crazy that the Turk was able to do that much volume back then, and why isn't he still well known? I mean, I realize that was quite awhile ago, but was that common for dealers to move that much inventory back then?
Got a 1855 putting it back together it has a left hand pto engagement got most of the parts to put it together but missing a few parts but I can't seem to find a diagram of them.
Enjoyed the video Ross! Tracking a tractor's history is always a challenge and fun, especially when it produces a great story. Now you need to make a duplicate of the Turk's dealer sticker and put 'er on your 1855. I have the same 38" rear wheel set-up except every other wheel clamp has a loop; must of had clamp on duals at some point! I agree with you on the look of 38's. Just look right while 34's often look a bit undersized for a tractor this size. Your luck at that auction - must be living right!

Just think how many 1650 and 1850s that was. Order 100 tractors at a time. Plus when Charles City would get cute and send them with the wrong tires, he would call them and send the load back. Returned freight of course
That's pretty interesting story about your tractor. I don't think dealers today would help young farmer get started. My dad at Young age had a dealer help him buy brand new, NewHolland haybine no money down.
Unfortunately I think those days are gone. Too many people abused that system and now dealers can’t trust anyone. The profit margin is so much different now as well. It takes a lot longer to pay off $200,000 than $2,000 especially when the grain prices are low.

They bought a lot of “high horsepower” diesels from outside sources for the 5 series tractors. They tried to go back to their own for the 55 series but I think they messed up on that. I think they should have used the NA 310 in the 1755, the 310 T with cooler in the 1855 and use the 6.354 Perkins turned up to about 125/130hp in the 1955. Then they would have had something.
hi Ros , i am looking at a super 88 and was wondering about the wide front that you can change it over to from a narrow front. what is that parts that are needed to do this
If you have manual steering all you need is the other front end. Just unbolt one and bolt up the other. Attach your steering shaft and you’re in business.
@@rosstheoliverman i was told that there is an different steering sector that is needed. the rest was just bolt on . i have run and did farm work with oliver and white so something new to me any way. the oliver we had was narrow front. i was going tpo buy this tracto and put wide front so i can put a loader on it
@@whiteeagletrans9850 on a fleetline/super front end, the steering gear usually stays with the unit. When you buy the other front end just make sure it has it on. But usually that stays with it when you buy one.
If i were painting a farmall M how would you get like a stencil for the M and the other words on the tractor would you just print it out or buy it somewhere

They’re definitely fun tractors to drive! I also think they’re one of the prettiest tractors ever made, this body style a 55 series tractors.

There’s several videos with it in the field. I mainly use it for planting soy beans and bailing.

Seems like White was buying motors from multuple manufacturers for a while including Hercules for the 2050 and 2150..kinda rare but they exist.
