I’m a preschool special education teacher and children are coming into program, in general, years behind in all developmental domains. They lost out on cognitive and social experiences within their first years of life. Starting with kindergarten, these standards and expectations need to be adjusted otherwise we are setting up students for failure. Great video!
Even at the high school level I’ve had to adjust expectations to meet them where they came in with but going into 2022 I’m aiming to up those expectations!
@@chanelmeyerr I like that approach. For me it’s all about the pacing. We start the year at square one and definitely try to push our students by the end of the year!
You are so right. I know my 1st graders were at a PreK level coming in. Our district said teach the standards and just fill in the gaps. I personally started with teaching mine the standards they should have learned in Kindergarten. I am so glad I did, because I am seeing growth in them. I know I told my principal that mine may not be where the district says they need to be, but I had to do what was best for my kids. She told me to keep doing what I am doing. She knows I teach, and is seeing the growth in my kids.
As an Elementary Education student, this recap was super good to hear! I want pacing guides/requirements to go away!! I do not understand how they want teachers to suddenly cram two years worth of info into 9 months and think it can be done. I'm nervous for when I get into my own classroom but also super hopeful that I'll be able to either find a supportive school environment or make the right changes where I will be. Thank you for this!! You rock!
You are a great voice for all teachers and express what every teacher feels regardless of grade level or location!! Thank you for your positive comments amid so many challenges brought by Covid.
I just can't wait to become a Teacher!!! I have two sons 3 and 8 years old and the past two years had shine an opportunity for me to realize what is important. I have now just started my journey to become a Secondary Mathematics Teacher . Thank you 😊 for your positive thoughts and comments about improving the system's 👍
Amen! Amen!Amen! Some pacing guides can go out the window. I was online from March 13, 2020 until early April 2021 and it was physically and emotionally draining not to be in a physical classroom. I remember crying on my last days of school in May 2020 and May 2021. The first time that I cried was because I misssd seeing my students in person and missing all that the analog world offers in a physical classroom. The second time that I cried was because I felt as if I had not taught anything. Thank you again, Kyle, for being a source of strength and motivation. Take care.
Being in a new district in a new grade level has really changed a lot of my perspectives. I am in the midst of working with amazing educators as we bring ourselves back out of the "Improvement Required" rating we received pre-pandemic, and seeing a group that actually cares about it is totally different than my last school where it's like "It is what it is, has been for over thirty years!" Which is not the attitude to have!! I am blessed to be working where I am, and even though I have challenges, and I feel like my plate is overfilling with expectations, I am seeing growth in my own teaching and that is the most special thing I think.
Thank you for your recount of 2021!! I agreed with all you said!! I teach 6th grade in CA and my district was online since March 2020 until June 2021! We started in person in August 2021 with mandated masks but hardly any distancing! I had up to 39 students in one period!!!
I'm a substitute teacher, and I have seen the effects of shortage of subs. I believe that subs need more training than what we get. I'm not a bachelor degree substitute. I've figured out how to lesson plan, but not everyone is able to do that.
Lol my school both shut down and went virtual at the end of this year (I made a video about it incase you’re interested in seeing that craziness lololol th-cam.com/video/ZwVo9W4vaS0/w-d-xo.html

It’s hard to meet our kids where they are at when we have to get them to an entirely different place🥺

It’s not fair. It’s not equitable. Thank you Kyle for using your platform to share the truth about what teaching is like right now!

So true.
Loved that our district invested in technology. New chromebooks and some gadgets.
So important!!
