@@SidPil every Tuesday. We like to have the reactions sit in TH-cam before releasing. We have been burned many times by copyright & blocks when we don't let them sit for proper time for checks.
In the books practically every divination prediction made comes true. 'One of the class will leave us forever.' -> Hermione drops Divination. Harry pretends he sees a Hippogriff flying away in the crystal ball and not with its head cut off as Trewlawney would expect -> Harry & Hermione save Buckbeak. At Christmas Trewlawney is scared to join 12 people at the table 'for when 13 dine, the rise to rise is the first to die'. But Scabbers/Peter Pettigrew already made 13 and Dumbledore rose to greet Trewlawney -> Out of the 13 Dumbledore dies first.
Something they don't really tell you in the movies is that Remus absolutely was NOT helping Sirius into the castle. He 100% believed that he was guilty and had betrayed the Potters. On the evening of Buckbeak's execution, professor Lupin was watching the map because he was certain that Harry, Ron, and Hermione would sneak out to visit Hagrid before the execution and he wanted to make sure they were safe. He saw 3 dots labeled for Harry, Ron, and Hermione enter Hagrid's hut, then about 15 minutes later, saw them exit, accompanied by a fourth dot labeled Peter Pettigrew, because Ron now had Scabbers. He couldn't believe his eyes, he thought "the map must have been malfunctioning". But then he saw another dot Labeled Sirius black charge towards the group of four and drag away the dots labeled Ronald Weasley and Peter Pettigrew, so he rushed out to the Shrieking shack. What he saw on the map, and a quick exchange of words with Sirius, confirmed to him that Sirius was innocent after all, and that he had been set up.
@@thor3562 yes the book are really good! And you can tell JK Rowling writing more “mature” as the books progress into the last book. The first two were like for kids.
They never properly explain this in the movies: Remus became a werewolf when he was a kid. Attacked by other werewolf - Fernir Greyback. Dumbledore decided to give him a chance and allowed him to study at Hogwarts. He made Woomping Willow to protect the entrance to The Shriecking Shack where Lupin would hide during his transformations (because of the noise he would make then, people started believing that the shack in hounted). The Marauders' were a group made of Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Petiegrew and James Potter. Their strong friendship began in their first year at Hogwarts. Sirius and James met on the train and had been inseparable ever since and the two met Remus and Peter afterwards. After couple years they realised what Lupin is. They decided that they want to help him during his transformations by becoming animagi and spending them with him. By their fifth year, all had secretly become unregistered Animagi. James Potter's Animagus form was a shining red stag (Prongs), Sirius Black's was a shaggy black dog (Padfoot), and Peter Pettigrew's was a fat grey rat (Wormtail).
@angelwing But at the same time its interesting to see where viewers (who haven't read the books) minds go when those details from the books get left out.
Together they created the Marauder's Map, partly for the mischief opportunity, but also so that they could sneak out of Hogwarts when Lupin would undergo his transformation and they could get him away from the castle and into hiding.
@angelwing Minor Spoiler: It might not be necessary for this movie, but it is sort of important for later. For example, in the Order of the Phoenix movie, Harry says to Snape "He has Padfoot at the place where it's hidden", which ends up being the reason that the Order can come and help them. But if you didn't read the books, that line makes no sense. Also, knowing that the Marauder's Map was made by them would have given a little bit more weight and explained in this movie why Lupin was so convinced that the map wasn't lying about Peter Pettigrew: because both of them were involved in it's making.
@angelwing this is really important background information that fleshes out the relationship of new characters introduced in this film, who are pivotal to the plot though. It should have been properly explained in one of the films.
That's why I sometimes love the changes they add to the movies. Like it was Harry who discovered Peter in Marauder's map and told Lupin about it instead of Lupin finding about it himself. As it would get easier to explain to Harry the situation as Harry himself has seen the dot labelled Peter Pettegrew roaming the halls of Hogward's. But it has been ages since I read the books, and I might even be wrong.
@@WashingPowderNirma2.0finally someone said, people take creative choices for granted, there are lot good things in movie which are not in the book, its the truth
I knew this is where Oak's enthusiasm would pick up. By the end of the series you'll be amazed at how far everyone came from where they started, and you'll actually want to go back to the beginning and remember how innocent things started out.
100% yes. I often go back and watch a HP movie when the mood strikes me, but it's usually from 5 and up. From coming watching these reviews and seeing them react to the beginning of the story, I forgot that they were almost like babies when they started on this journey.
@@nevermindmyname813 fr. I rarely rewatch first movies, mostly because I always get sad watching them. They are just kids for God's sake. The older I get, the more I understand Molly's urge to try and keep Harry away from Order and all Dambledore's secretiveness around Voldemort's matter. They just want to let those kids be kids a bit longer, even if they're already exposed to horrors of battling evil. Really sad and tough thing to think about.
The chocolate helps with feeling happier. The dementors are a representation of depression and chocolate makes you feel better. It represented JK Rowling's battle with depression while she was writing the books.
Yeah they sadly cut Madame Pomfrey from the movie who remarked that they finally had a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who knew his remedies. - I always found that a neat way to establish that chocolate was the remedy of choice from a healer's perspective and also lash out at Lockhart and apparently equally at Quirrel and other DADA teachers before.
The extra tidbit, which is the cherry on top of the Dementor’s symbolism, is Expecto Patronum. You need to focus on your happiest memories to defeat Dementors.. much like with depression itself!
@@CallumIsRaving Not sure if you mean depression or just feeling a little depressed. Imagine overcoming a mental illness just as easily as "thinking happy thoughts".
I wonder if that was subtly calling him half-blood/muggle born. He does potions. That's what it's called in the wizarding world. They don't have chemistry class.
Some details are not enough explained in the movie and are in the book - the Marauder Map was actually made by Lupin, Sirius Black, James Potter (Harry's father) and Peter Pettigrew. Their nicknames were Moony (Lupin, oc), Wormtail (Pettigrew), Padfoot (Sirius), and Prongs (James) because the group needed to be able to stay with Lupin when he transformed, so they all teched themselves to turn into animals. That's why the patronus of Harry takes the form of a deer, his father could transform in one. I'm finishing to watch your reaction and I'm loving it, can't wait for the next ones as the plot continues to grow a lot!
@@BaddMedicine She's absolutely right. Sirius, James and Peter wanted to keep Lupin company during his transformations. It's very much elaborated upon in the book that James and Sirius were as close as two boys can be. Sirius Black comes from one of the most ancient pureblood families that hates muggle borns. But Sirius was different and got sorted into Gryffindor, and his family despised him for it. So the Potter family took Sirius in to live with them, and that's where Sirius lived during the summer breaks away from school. So, Harry and Sirius having this new relationship is EXTREMELY important for Harry, because Sirius wasn't just a friend of his dad. The man is as close to blood to Harry as one can get, without being blood.
@@jgamez106 Maybe the only thing that would be a potential spoiler is what I said about the Black family. But, it doesn't spoil the story at all. It just gives some backstory about Sirius that is told to us in the books, but not touched upon nearly enough in the movies.
It’s bad, but the way I laughed when Quinn said, “This is garbage, bro!” when Buckbeak was “executed.” Oak’s speech about how animals pay the price for being animals also hit me in the feels. That and how he is slowly becoming a fan of the series. I also crack up how he’s constantly messing up character’s names😂 Great video, guys!
Loved this I laughed so many times. In the books they go really deep into the story between Sirius, Pettigrew, lupin and James Potter. All were best friends and created the marauders map together.
The books explained it a little better. An Animagus is a witch or wizard who underwent a very complicated and long spell to acquire the ability to turn into an animal at will. The animal they end up turning into is not their choice and supposedly reflects their personality or their soul. Sirius Black is an Animagus who can turn into a large, black dog, Peter Pettigrew is an Animagus who can turn into a rat. Professor McGonagall is an Animagus too, as we've seen, she can turn into a tabby cat.
They explain in the books, but I'm not sure they explain it during the plotwists reveals in the shack or afterwards. But Harry thought hesaw his dad because Harry is very physically identical to his dad (which is something people love to comment to him), and he also has seen old photos. So he saw a guy like him, using an advanced and powerful charm that he himself could't do, saving his and his godfather's life. So he went with that. The idea that the saviour was himself was out of the question for obvious reasons. The stag animagus knowledge wasn't needed imo.
@@Xeno_Solarus I might be wrong, but I feel like I remember Harry knowing that James's Patronus was a stag, and that's why he thought it was him (plus the physical similarity). But I don't think he knew the Animagus thing at the time.
Alan Rickman and Gary Oldman scene is the stuff of legends "a dementors kiss one can only imagine what that's like, it's said to be almost unbearable to witness, but I'll do my best". Love that scene so much
That brief hug between Sirius and Remus spawned a new subgenre of fanfiction and art called WolfStar. Personally I don't care if Sirius and Remus are straight, gay, or bi. I've seen lots of good stories in all cases.
Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban after seeing Scabbers (Peter Pettigrew) in a Daily Prophet article of the paper Cornelius Fudge gave him in late July 1993, recognising him as his traitorous former friend. By 31 July, Black took advantage of his extreme weight loss to slip through his cell door in his Animagus dog form (which was unregistered, thus the Ministry did not take preparations against) while the Dementors were bringing in his food and swam across the North Sea to find Pettigrew. Black was able to maintain his sanity due to his knowledge of his innocence, a non-happy thought that the Dementors could not take. It was only this that allowed him to maintain his powers to transform, and what made the escape possible.
And thus begins the movies, cutting out a lot of the details. And I get why? But it does make trying to understand certain things in the future very difficult. I wish these movies, had a 5 hour long cut.
And you also forgot to mention that Dementors don't recognize animals emotions as easily as humans emotions, and that's how he was able to pass through them.
His "expecto patronum" spell was much stronger as he really believed he can see his dad again. His love towards his dad increased the strength f his spell as it was one of the happiest memory of his life.
Not at all. In the book, his happy thought is that he could go live with Sirius. If anything, his patronum looked like that because he had already seen it and knew what it would look like, so he had full confidence that it’d be that strong.
Ah this takes me back. I actually worked on this one. I was part of Nick Dudman's creature effects crew. I worked on the Monster books and amongst other things. It was my first time on a Potter movie and I enjoyed every damn day of it. lol The director was beloved of the crew and was extremely talented imo. I worked on this and the next one. :) Ah happy days........
To your point about them being full of good lessons, there have been studies in classrooms done where researchers have tested children's empathy before reading Harry Potter, and then again after reading and they have shown that the children an increased amount of empathy towards other groups of people after being exposed to the Harry Potter world. I think that's a very clear message in these films/books. Empathy towards other people, creatures, and animals.
Michael Gambon also worked in another movie with Gary Oldman and another character (Frances de la Tour) that won't be seen till the next Potter movie. As George and Martha Washington in 'The Book of Eli'.
I have to be honest, the first time I’ve read the book, exactly when Sirius and Harry talks about living together… man I swear that I’ve cried like a baby cause I thought Harry could never been mistreated again 😭💔
I can't think of a bigger shame than Harry never getting to live with Sirius, or spend any real time with him. They deserved so much more time together, but Harry unfortunately has bad luck disease for people around him he cares about
I remember as a young kid asking my mom why Harry couldn't just go live with the Weasleys because the Dursleys were so awful, I felt so bad for him. (Little did I know there was an actual reason for it)
"I'm sorry, are we not gonna acknowledge the hippogriff?" gotta be one of the best out of context phrases I've ever heard. Glorious, I'll keep using that one for the rest of my life
At one point when practicing the patronus with lupin Harry thought this to himself: “Any second now, he might hear his mother again… but he shouldn’t think that, or he would hear her again, and he didn’t want to… or did he?” Also in the book he heard both of his parents last words: Lily’s - “‘Not Harry! Not Harry! Please- I’ll do anything-‘“ James’ - “‘Lily, take Harry and go! It’s him! Go! Run! I’ll hold him off-‘“ “Terrible though it was to hear his parents’ last moments replayed inside his head, these were the only times Harry had heard their voices since he was a very small child. But he’d never be able to produce a proper Patronus if he half wanted to hear his parents again…”
The dementors feed off of despair and sadness, and Harry has experienced more of that than most of his peers. Thats why the dementors are obsessed with him lol. And they effect him the strongest for the same reason-Harry has experienced true horrors and sadness, so when a dementor comes and sucks away the happiness, Harry is left with some really horrible things in his mind
Yes, the rest of the kids at least grew up with strong parental figures. Harry doesn't know what is that about, he grew up in an abusive environment. It's interesting to think about that if we compare both Harry and Tom Riddle who had a similar background (even worse than Harry's) and that lead him to become Voldemort but Harry made completely different choices. As Dumbledore said "its our choices what defines us".
I don’t know that I’ve watched anything in the last month that was as enjoyable as watching three grown men watch Harry Potter! I know, we the fans, keep telling you guys “just wait! You won’t predict what happens next!” But it’s true. And watching the three of you become kids again watching this series has been a blast. Impatiently waiting for the next one! Stop making us wait a week in between!!! Much love from Louisiana 💜⚜💜
This legit is my favourite Harry Potter movie from the film series. The best quality of this movie was the direction of Alfonso Cuarón. We never got such a creative film making style from any of the other films in this series. Prisoner of Azkaban really stands out from all the others. One of my favorite decisions that Alfonso made was to change the way students wore their uniforms. He made it more casual and realistic for us to relate to it. There were many scenes in which the trio wear casual attires, unlike the first two films, in which all students wore the uniform In the same way in almost every scene, sometimes even at night time scenes. I like that they changed the geographical location of Hagrids hut too. I was so impressed on how Alfonso places so many beautiful insert shots between each scene, like the camera pasing through the glass of the clock tower, the shot where a bright red flower freezes and shrivels as a dementor passes near it, the camera moving through the mirror to the other side in the scene of Lupin teaching the spell "Ridikulus", The inclution of the sound effect of a running rat, when Harry is looking to encounter Peter Pettigrew as shown by the Marauder's map. But my most favorite idea of all, was how Alfonso establishes the passage of time and the changing of seasons, with the shot of the Whomping Willow changing its appearance after each season. It's brilliant how he chose to do that, because the willow turns out to be an integral part of the story as it becomes the the location of Sirius Black's encounter, his revelation and the mind blowing plot twist. The only shot that I'm not much of a fan, is the freeze frame shot of Harry's face at the end. But honestly, I just love this film.
The Sirius/Lupin/Snape scene in the shrieking shack is one of my favorites in the entire series. It’s three world class actors in Alan Rickman, Gary Oldman, and David Thewlis acting the most pivotal scene in the movie and they are absolutely fantastic in it. I always rewind to see it again, it’s just that good. Another great reaction, y’all!
I appreciate that Oak is willing to see what’s next without automatically writing something off and assuming he won’t enjoy it just because the first experience(s) wasn’t really his thing. I think the “new” Dumbledore will grow on you. D2’s portrayal became my favorite as the movies progressed and I honestly can’t imagine Richard Harris (D1) playing some of the future scenes. I love the gravitas Michael Gambon brought to the role. The next movie has a scene people whine about a lot where Dumbledore is agitated and loud with Harry after his name comes out of the Goblet (I know you’ve already posted GoF on Patreon which is the only reason I’d mention a potential spoiler). The book says, “…Dumbledore asks calmly,” and people use this as a reason to crap on D2 which is absolutely ridiculous. In that one question and the way he asks it they convey about half a chapter or more of half a dozen other characters sharing their outrage/worry/concern. It was a brilliant choice by the writer, director, actor, whoever it was that chose it. We instantly understand that chill Dumbledore is unsettled by this and we (and Harry) know it’s a BIG DEAL without being blatantly told. It does nothing to permanently alter how we view Dumbledore throughout the remaining movies unless you’re pissed off that the movie doesn’t exactly match the books. 🙄 Oak is right that Dumbledore is letting Harry stretch his wings but is always there in the background guiding him and giving life lessons. It’s important to remember though, too, that Dumbledore is Headmaster of a busy school not to mention all his other endeavors. He’s not their home room teacher. Principals rarely have this close of a relationship with students.
'Expecto Patronum' doesn't only makes shield, it's an 'Attack' spell that conjures a creature (made out of light), based on the wizard/witch, and attacks with it
The Dementors are not exactly "after" Harry. They just affect him much more because of the horrors in his past (the murder of his parents) because they feed of hopelessness and despair. They suck happiness right out of the air, so the quidditch match was like a feast for them, that's why they came inside the grounds in the first place, they couldn't resist.
There's also the theory that they are drawn to him because he has bit of Voldy's soul. Both share the same terrible memory; though for different reasons.
@@MeanDark2 I'm sorry but when the last movie in the series has been out for over 10 years there's no longer "spoilers". Not to mention, it's mentioned in the second movie when Harry questions Dumbledore about his similarities between himself and Voldemort. Granted, he didn't say "soul" but he did say he left a bit of himself behind which is why he can talk to snake's and has similar qualities. It's also a theory, not stated in book or movie.
I enjoyed your conversation after the movie, really insightful. I grew up along with these characters and was about the same age/grade as the actors as this story progressed so this series holds a lot of nostalgia for me. I can't even describe the excitement of the latest book coming out or the newest trailer for the next movie. The Harry Potter series has been translated more than any other book in the world apart from the Bible. It was a phenomenon.. can't wait for your next reaction!
I’ve seen some people argue that the details about the Marauders and the map are unimportant. They definitely aren’t and should have been included. A change from the book that wasn’t a big deal, but is still interesting is this: Harry gets the new broom, the Firebolt, much sooner in the books. But because it was sooner, he didn’t know it was from Sirius. So it gets confiscated for a bit while they check off dark magic etc on it. I go back and forth on whether I prefer how the book handles it vs how the movie did. Glad you guys enjoyed this one! Alfonso Cuaron really did this movie in his own style and nicely separately it from the first movies. Can’t wait for the next reaction!
"This really makes me wanna read the books" yes yes YES!!! Go for it! As good as the movies are, they can't hold a candle to the books.🦉❤️ Sooo much more world building and details. For me, it's especially the references and motifs from hundreds of years of literature, mythology, Alchemy, religion and British culture that Rowling so masterfully has woven into the story, all while giving them clever twists, that make me pick up the books again and again.
It's so painful watching them talk over the scene where Lupin explains why the Dementors are so drawn to Harry, only for Oak to ask 'But why are they going after Harry in the first place?' That's why I'm usually not that into group reactions.
"Why do the Dementors keep going for Harry?" It was hilarious to me that you guys were asking this question and speaking over the actual explanation you were looking for! Also - "Why does he keep giving him chocolate?!" He just explained why! Each time he hands it out, he explains why. It helps. It's explained better in the books (of course) but he explicity, outright says - it helps.
@@BaddMedicine I think I read somewhere, it's because Dementor trying to relieve you worst moments, and that's why the Patronum Spell need to be when you thinking the most happiest moment in your live. Chocolate is said to release serotonin in your brain, which makes someone to be uplifting, or in a good mood, so, it definitely helps.
I'm having a rewatch of this series and I laughed way more at reactions than I did the first time 🤣🤣🤣 the inklings of your new fandom incoming was so evident when Oak was angry about buckbeak
Thank you, Katherine. And thank you for sharing this and doing a rewatch. And at that point... Zero idea that we would get as invested as we are now. 🤙🤙🤙
This is personally the first time i've seen a reaction where one of the reactors openly admits to not enjoying the content all that much. It definitely makes it so much more satisfying to get to this movie and have his mind completely changed. happy to people being introduced to these movies!
I’m so excited for this one!! I love people giving Harry Potter a chance and seeing how dark the series gets as it progresses. It isn’t just a kids story
Heck no, this is way too dark to be just a children's story. If they read the books, then it's more clear as to how much more deeper the whole series actually is. The attention to detail is just amazing
I haven't read the HP books yet, because I don't literally ever read but I think maybe when I start reading, Harry Potter books will be my first books! Cuz I love those movies been watching them since I was a kid
@@miro1641 they’re honestly very good and it’s nice to see some specific details that the movie doesn’t get into since it has the disadvantage of being a movie. The books are a lot darker but honestly it fits because of what Harry goes through in those 7 years, the kid has some trauma!! I love both the books and the movies but it is rlly nice to see certain things that get glossed over. If you do end up reading them, I hope you enjoy!!
@@sailiealquadacil1284 Well, the Patronus usually takes the same form as the Animagus, doesn't it? Since they're both connect to the person's soul and can't be chosen.
I wish the films showed more of Hermione’s close friendships with her female friends like in the books. I mean they kind of do in the films but it’s sadly not often. Also most of Hermione’s lines and scenes in this film were actually originally Ron’s in the book. Like him standing up to Sirius to not let him get to Harry. And he even yelled at Snape for treating Hermione terribly.
The new director (Alfonso Cuaron) did a great job with this movie, which is often the best reviewed movie in the HP franchise. Unfortunately, Cuaron did not return for the next one so you will see something very different. The next one is still a good movie but it definitely has a different vibe, just an FYI
This movie is my absolute favorite of the series. "whatchu doing down there?" "I fell over" "whatchu fell over for?" "I didn't do it on purpose" Bahahaha my favorite part of the movie surrounds this scene Also my family and I quote this scene all the time.
@@baronbrummbar8691 It's just the thing about the prophecy at the end of book 5. How Harry and Neville both perfectly fit the prophecy, being born at the end of July to parents who had thrice defied Voldemort. But according to the prophecy, Voldemort would "mark him as his equal." And the only reason Voldemort picked Harry out of the two was because Harry is a half-blood, just like Voldemort, whereas Neville is a pure-blood.
@@KoroftheSon i know ---- that is why i don´t see a deeper conection between them -------- - to be honest if i would have been rowling i wouldn´t have added the "mark him as his equal" line ------ and in book 7 had harry reveal that the choosen one is neville
@@baronbrummbar8691 "The Chosen One" isn't like a real, magical thing or anything though. It just means Voldemort marking Harry as his equal is what eventually led to his downfall. If he'd marked Neville as his equal who knows what would have happened.. what do you mean by Harry revealing that Neville is the chosen one ? That wouldn't mean anything at that point
I love your reaction! You took me back to watching the movies with my granddaughter for the first time. You've made me smile and I can't wait to see the rest of the movies with you. So many twists and turns to be discovered.
The reason why Lupin give Choccolate to Harry is because it helps against depression but only for short term though. if Dementor fed on you for too long, even a truckload of chocolate won’t help you :D Science fact : chocolate can affects your neurotransmitter, release dopamine and endorphins. which reducing anxiety and depression in the process. However, you might get addicted if you eat it literally everyday since you disrupt your innate natural neurotransmitter system, creates a new pattern for your brain. then your brain will keep demand it.
I can definitely believe that chocolate is addictive. When I see chocolate I feel a strong urge to buy and eat it. Although I'm very disciplined and resist that urge very well. I eat it once a month, maybe less. But sure as heck love it!!
I always thought of chocolate in the Wizarding World as the home remedy for exposure to the Dementors, but home remedies might not be the best OVEREXPOSURE if you will.
I'm new to your channel and watched your reaction to the 20th anniversary special first. It's been really fun binging your reactions after seeing what big fans you are now. You guys are great to listen to and your chemistry between each other is awesome. I was 11 when I read the first book, same age as Harry was. And grew up almost parallel to him in age through all the books. I'm now 34 and can't wait to share them with my daughter when she's older.
Harry Potter and the Plot Twists of Azkaban is definitely still a great movie. This one and the next one might be a tie for favorite movies; it's so hard to choose, the older I get. Great reaction!
What I really appreciated about the book here is how it delivers the mistake that Sirius being the one who betrayed Harry's parents. Also the reason why Harry seemed to look like a stag when defeated all the dementors is that when the patronus charm is perfected, it takes a form of an animal (unique to the wizard)
PoA is by far my favourite HP movie and a lot of credit needs to go to the director Alfonso Cuarón for that. He really understood how to bring the Wizarding World to life. The world in HP3 feels so much richer and more magical than any other HP film because of his incredible creative vision of it. He also managed to completely mature it with just this one film, it's such a stark contrast to the first two, and provided a perfect stepping stone for all the movies after it.
Ageed. The world building in this film is why it’s my favourite movie. I know a lot of people ragged on it when it came out because of all the things that weren’t in the books, but right from the beginning I loved how it enriched the world of the series.
This is where the story starts to get darker and darker until the final book where you start to wonder how these kids are even normal after everything they’ve been through.
The way you guys connected with the Buckbeak/animals and hearing about the oak views on it has touched me! Also on the Dumbledore taking a step back, and letting kids make decisions to grow, that’s such a good insight
42:09 about the deer: It is not explained in the movie, but when the patronus charm is strong It takes on the shape of an animal, wich represents someone the person loves. Harry's patronus on full force looks like a deer becouse It represents his father, who was an animagus and could transform into a stag.
Completely agree about animals being put down unfairly because of people. I'm an animal lover too so that part always resonated with me. So glad Buckbeak was saved in the end. Great comments on the lessons from each movie. Looking forward to the next one. 💕
@@moonheems3558 She btw 🙂 and I agree. That's always such a weird thing some people jump to once you say you love animals. It's not a direct correlation.
Perhaps someone already mentioned this: Remus in Roman mythology is one of two twins raised by a she-wolf. Lupus is Latin for wolf. Lupine is the adjective. Sirius is the name of the dog star. So Rowling dropped some hints for us.
I didn't see any comments about it but this is definetly my favorite harry potter if only for the cinemotagrophy. The entire film, feel free to double check cause its true, the camera is ALWAYS MOVING. Whether pushing in or out or moving to the side or whatever it is always moving even if its subtle. It gives this feeling of paranoia like someone is following harry or claustrophobia cause it feels like the walls of the world are closing in, trapping harry. Best movie in the franchise.
i just found you guys through your new avatar reactions and the Oak's focus on lessons is sooo sweet! such good dad energy, its great knowing you're paying attention to that when watching all this children's media
Knowing in advance how much Oak grows to love this series, I knew that this movie would be where his enthusiasm picked up. This is by far my favourite HP movie (though it is a close race) and it was so fun getting to watch you guys react to all the twists and turns and red herrings. It reminded me of 9 year old me watching my dad react for the first time. ❤
I have a hard time getting over how poorly, or even never, they explained the Marauders and the map in the movie. I feel it is such a glaring plot hole. So movie Remus and Sirius just happen to know about the map and how it works? The entire background, and thus motivation, for the characters is left out. -They ARE two of marauders, hunting the third for the murder of the fourth, and they made the map! I read the book first and knew how it all unfolded, but after I saw the movie I could not understand how movie-verse Sirius and Lupin "solved the puzzle". Anyways, so much fun seeing you react to this thing I grew up with :)
The analogy of fear (boggart) being finished by laughter is so good! Also, dementors are supposed to be the depiction of depression. It sucks your soul or your life out of you (wilting flowers), and you feel better when you have chocolate!
I believe Snape was emphasizing page 394 because it taught about werewolves or animaguses. Lots of little ways Snape tried to communicate undercover with Harry.
I've seen this movie a bunch of times. I just noticed that when Harry is walking in the hallway at night and Peter Pettigrew goes past him you can hear him crawling around as a rat. Never noticed that before.
What life lessons have you learned from Harry Potter? You remember Dumbledore's speech in the beginning, 'when things seem dark, one must remember to turn on the light'. There was a shooting in the US where the father went on a rampage and shot everyone at home. But one little girl survived. She quoted that line and said she drew strength from it. It's inspiring to many in that way.
When I did a Harry Potter marathon, it was years later and I had a tons of spoilers (eg people liking Sirius black so I knew he was misunderstood) and time traveling. So I’m very happy to be watching your reactions and see it as an actual first time viewer! ❤ a joy to follow your thoughts and being blown away as the plot progresses. Didn’t realize how many plot twists there were! Made me love this movie even more
The marauders map was created by a group of friends that actually consisted of Remus Lupin (moony) Peter pettigrew (wormtail) sirius black (padfoot) James potter (prongs). The nicknames they gave each other after each (minus remus) becoming an animagus to help remus’s transformations as a werewolf because they could accompany him as animals. You saw Peter and Sirius’s animagus forms and James’s was a stag which is the same as Harry’s patronus (also why he thought he saw his father when he saw the stag patronus)
BOOK SPOILERS! The reason Lupin was able to know about the map was because he helped make it. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs are the makers of the Marauders Map. Sirius Black, James Potter and Peter Pettigrew learned to be animagi to accompany Lupin while Lupin is a werewolf to make the transformation less worse. Dumbledore had planted the whomping willow and put in a secret entrance to the shrieking shack so that when Lupin was studying at Hogwarts, he could have used the shack during full moons. Moony: Lupin Wormtail: Pettigrew Padfoot: Sirius Prongs: James Potter (because his animagus was a stag)
Honestly my favorite book from the series when I was little, and probably my top 2 for the movies. It's the book/movie that makes the whole franchise take a massive dive into morality, intrigue, emotion, and lessons. You see how the series is not just about the mystical magic of growing up.
i like your insight regarding Dumbledore being the parental figure teaching harry lessons through experience which in retrospect makes a whole lot of sense
These hp videos are some of my comfort videos so i've gone back and rewatched a few times now but every single time I cant get over how naked the table looks without oak's little scarf on his mic that he has now lol Love the content! Thank you guys
BINGING all of these reaction videos right now dude I’m loving it. I wish I could’ve been there as y’all were watching it to be able to fill you in on more in depth stuff in the end comments. The HP world is just full of so much fun interesting intricate stuff! Can’t wait for the rest! PoA has always been my favorite!
I'm so glad y'all got here. Its time to plunge into darkness in an all out free fall, Each installment from here on is twice as intense as the previous. I'm super stoked to see how ya like the next one!
I am totally enjoying your reactions and absolutely love that you're getting so invested in the Harry Potter story!! Seeing Oak raising his arms in victory when Harry chases the dementors away is fantastic!! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your episodes!!
I could tell Oak was getting more into the series with this one which is awesome this is my favorite one. I love watching people watch Harry Potter for the first time. I can't to watch the rest.
Oh, they didn't leave out just a little but A LOT. Little interactions that tie everything together in the end, like Hermione always being tired and short-tempered throughout that year, because of attending so many classes, and that her getting the time turner at all was a big exception because she is such a model student. (The whole story about the Marauders, but that was already mentioned...) And it only gets worse with the next movies, because the books got more and more complex and big. They are basically mystery thrillers, not just young adult books. The next book is my absolute favourite (Rowling was at her absolute peak there) but sadly the movie doesn't do it justice for me, because I just know what all is missing and how they changed characters to make them more cinematically appealing. The fate of one, who has read the books first. :) But I am sure you will enjoy the whole series. I can only recommend reading the books too, they are just awesome! :D A true phenomenon of our time.
I gotta say I love how in the first 2 movies it’s a classic „happy ending“- story like in the end our protagonists win and everything ends up being good all conflict is resolved. Even in Prisoner of Azkaban there’s still hope, in the end we kinda get some sort of happy ending but you also realize that not always every aspect of the story can end well for the protagonists. Sometimes the world‘s just unfair- in this case with Lupin getting fired and having to leave the school in the end, Peter Pettigrew getting away and also Sirius not getting redemption from officials which resolves in Harry and him not being able to be together and Sirius having to live in hiding basically or else he’ll be executed. By the fourth movie however, there’s no hope left anymore. No happy ending but instead cruel reality. Can’t wait for the next you guyss!!! 🙌🏻
This is my most re-watched movie! I personally think this is one of the most well made movies of the 2000s, don't be fooled by the action/fantasy label. The cinematography of the movie is outstanding, adaptive screenplay is the one of the best ever done.. Cuarón is a master filmmaker! Oh, and the music!! John Willams's "A window to the past" and the Buckbeak one is magical ✨
I just found this channel yesterday but I'm already hooked. The idea of three cool buff dudes reacting to movies they haven't seen and giving a review afterwards is awesome!
Just found your channel, loving your commentary so far! The Oak mentioned that it was a different feel to the previous two in this film. I once heard The Prisoner of Azkaban described as “the point where the series starts playing for keeps”. Always thought that was a neat way to sum it up.
Great take on the lesson for parents! I never thought of that. I am surprised not one of you picked up on Lupin's fear (boggart) being the moon or the plot device of only finding a piece of a body (Peter's finger) I'm very excited for y'all to continue on this epic story! I'm sure one day you'll want to take the sorting hat quiz 🎥 💓 🍿
I love how y'all have zero vested interest in this world and you STILL caught that Harry doing magic in the cold open is a MASSIVE plothole, well played lads. The best explanation I can offer is that lumos (flashlight spell) is such a basic spell that it's not covered by the underage wizardry laws. If a muggle sees a wizard with their wand tip lit then they are 99.9% certain to just assume it's a flashlight.
Also, I just assumed that since it was an accident and purely reactionary it wouldn’t be that big of a deal when it came to the laws. The laws are that you can’t intentionally do magic outside of school if you are underage, and he had an uncontrollable emotional response- millions of kids his age and younger have probably done similar with the rise in extreme emotion so it would make sense that the laws put in place would make that distinction and decide not to charge him for it. And, even if it was an issue, the worst they would probably do is expel him from Hogwarts, I doubt that they would send a kid younger than 17 to Azkaban. Maybe their version of a mental institution but not to prison.
The accidental magic 100% should have gotten him expelled, and probably would have any other year. He got a warning notice and nearly was expelled for Dobby's magic a year earlier, and they couldn't prove Harry had even been the one to do the magic. Fudge knew that Sirius Black was out for Harry, though, and the safest place for him to go was Hogwarts, so he couldn't expel him. If the public found out Fudge was responsible for expelling Harry and Sirius Black found and killed him, he'd have the PR blowback of the century and probably lose his job. The lumos spell... total movie-only plothole, but I'd buy John's explanation.
@@dylancole1910 the laws do not make that distinction & the only reason Harry wasn't severely reprimanded was the direct intervention of the Minister for Magic. Harry received an official warning the previous year after Dobby (not even Harry) cast a hover charm at the Dursley's. As for expulsion from Hogwarts, that's not up to the ministry & even if Harry had been arrested & sent to Azkaban, Dumbledore would be under no obligation to expel him.
When people say the 6th one gets the short end, I always feel like what you learn about James Potter group was way more important that the whole story of Voldemort. Sure, it was important too, but I feel like we know enough in the movies to understand the main villain. I wonder if a series could do the books justice, or short movies about plot point absent from the original movies. Harry and Sirius discussion about a new home hits hard. That's all they both want : Harry to be away from the Dursley and learn more about his parents, Sirius to take care of this little boy and talk about his best friend. I love how James open his house to a rejected Sirius while the Weasley are always taking care of Harry. Warm my heart.
The point is that the people who watch the movies don't learn about James potter group. They see only a piece from a death eater's point of view. They weren't bullies they were rivals and only to Snape, a death eater and bully. The movie don't show their great friendship and the fact that they were loved by all students and professors. They were great people who fought Voldemort to protect their loved ones. And I assure you that the whole story about Voldemort is crucial, it makes you understand why he is like this and why he can't feel nor understand love.
@@dogti2959 I know but I've watched the movies with people who haven't read the books and they don't understand almost nothing, so clearly there are parts that should be there
The books really are amazing, if you love the movies you will love the books. As a 30 year old, I grew up with the books/movies and I still reread the these books every year starting in October. The books give you so much info on the world and really are worth the read.
The original dumbledor actor Richard Harris passed away do was replaced my Michael Gambon. It an unpopular opinion but I think Michaels version of dumbledor suits the darker tone of the movies better. Oh and also, that was a deer you saw, everyone wizard/witch protronas spell is represented by a different animal. You'll see in a few movies time
So glad to see yall getting into it, especially oak!! I actually wasn't aloud to watch this as a kid because the dementors and werewolf were deemed too scary by my parents, but it's such a good film. My personal favorite is tue 4th one however, so I cannot wait to see yall react to that one!
The Shrieking Shack was an abandoned house in Hogsmeade. For many years, villagers thought it was haunted because they often heard screams coming from inside, and Albus Dumbledore encouraged the rumour, as he was the one who commissioned it, due to Remus Lupin's Lycanthropy. The secret passageway could be seen on the Marauder's Map, which was at the possession of Remus, Sirius, Pettigrew and James-as it's been mentioned in other comments. The Shrieking Shack was only used so that Remus Lupin would have a place for his monthly transformations into a werewolf in secret and in safety. The yells and shouts heard by the villagers were really Lupin biting and scratching himself due to lack of humans to infect. The Whomping Willow was planted the same year that Remus Lupin arrived at Hogwarts as a student. The tree can be frozen by pushing a knot on its base. During the Marauders time at Hogwarts, a transformed Peter Pettigrew, whose Animagus form was a rat, would slip in and push the knot so they could go in. This was one of the best info I had read in the books, and I wish this story would be more clear in the movie too. Prizoner of Azkaban is my second fav film of the series, after the Goblet of Fire. Can't wait to watch your reaction to that 😂 Keep goinggggg!!!!
It's well worth the read for the patronus lesson, it took weeks and the development on the books shows so much more depth to why Lupin was a huge father figure and mentor!

What most people don't mention is, Ron's prediction in the Divination class was correct. Harry did suffer a bit but was happy about it in the end.
In the book that prediction was actually said by Harry!
@@robertbrookes2000 woah, that was foreshadowing wayyyy ahead, Trelawny is comedic but damn she was a powerful seer

@@robertbrookes2000 say what you want about JK Rowling, shes honestly brilliant at what she does. my mind can’t even comprehend
Thanks for this explanation. I always knew Lupin used the map to find them but didn't know the rest of it. Really interesting 👍
This comment made me want to read the books. and I"m not a reader nor have I ever considered taking on such a task haha
@@Algorythmfpv please if you can find it in you, please do read the books. They are soo great. Some of my most favorite books ever.
@@thor3562 yes the book are really good! And you can tell JK Rowling writing more “mature” as the books progress into the last book. The first two were like for kids.
Plothole that has bothered me a lot is that the map should've been showing duplicates of Harry and Hermione at that point for Lupin.
They never properly explain this in the movies:
Remus became a werewolf when he was a kid.
OK FINE. I’ll read them.
@angelwing Minor Spoiler:
It might not be necessary for this movie, but it is sort of important for later.
3 top tier line deliveries in this film:
"He was their friend!"
"I did my waiting, 12 years of it!"
And last but not least
"Turn to page 394"
"Turn to page 394" such an iconic line.
I personally take to "I would have DIED..." when pettigrew asks what they would have done in his situation
"Turn to page 394" should be the number one quote for the entire franchise really.
Count Harry’s powerful Expecto Patronum in there, as well
You know why Alan Rickman delivers lines so perfectly?
"He can't help it, it's habit by now."
“That’s um what’s his face. SILAS!!” that killed me 🤣🤣🤣
Damn that Silas Black!! He killed Percy Pettigrew in cold blood!!
To Snape's credit, his first instinct in that situation was to protect his students from the werewolf
which was not in the books. in the books he was knocked out
@@hoorainbaig2024 very true
Me, a 9 year old in theatres: “Snape!??! YOU DO CARE!!!!!”

The chocolate helps with feeling happier. The dementors are a representation of depression and chocolate makes you feel better. It represented JK Rowling's battle with depression while she was writing the books.
Thank you for the tidbit 🤙
I mean chocolate does legitly release the happiness hormone in the brain, at least least stimulates the release of it.

Thanks for checking this out, Vicki. 🤙 Keep those tidbits coming 👍
And Harry's dad was a Stag, and is why Harry thought it was his dad that saved him at the end.
@@cryhwks That's why Harry knew? Pretty sure he didn't know his dad was an animagus, unless it was said in the books.

Oh ya, the hate expressed between them was visceral. Magnificent acting by both.
That brief hug between Sirius and Remus spawned a new subgenre of fanfiction and art called WolfStar. Personally I don't care if Sirius and Remus are straight, gay, or bi. I've seen lots of good stories in all cases.
@@Shan_Dalamani why did you feel the need to tell us this?
@@billbill6094 Why did you feel the need to dredge this up a year later? I don't even see any of your posts from then.
How do the Dementors take their food? lol
And you also forgot to mention that Dementors don't recognize animals emotions as easily as humans emotions, and that's how he was able to pass through them.
@@julianagegenheimer Also because of his energy was too low for them to detect.
Yeah I guess that lore has always been there since the first shots of this series.
56:30 Ron reading Harry’s tea leaves: “You’re going to suffer, but you are going to be happy about it.”
Never caught that foreshadowing before.
His "expecto patronum" spell was much stronger as he really believed he can see his dad again. His love towards his dad increased the strength f his spell as it was one of the happiest memory of his life.
In the book, his "happy" thought is getting to live with Sirius, nothing to do with seeing his father.
That's sweet but very inaccurate to both book and film.
You got it completely wrong man
Not at all. In the book, his happy thought is that he could go live with Sirius. If anything, his patronum looked like that because he had already seen it and knew what it would look like, so he had full confidence that it’d be that strong.

Also in the book he heard both of his parents last words:
Lily’s - “‘Not Harry! Not Harry! Please- I’ll do anything-‘“
James’ - “‘Lily, take Harry and go! It’s him! Go! Run! I’ll hold him off-‘“
“Terrible though it was to hear his parents’ last moments replayed inside his head, these were the only times Harry had heard their voices since he was a very small child. But he’d never be able to produce a proper Patronus if he half wanted to hear his parents again…”
That part really made me gasp and broke me tbh. It was so sad.
And now I'm crying
Thank you for the kind words! It’s quite the journey we’re all on and loving it more by the minute! -Oak
Oak is right that Dumbledore is letting Harry stretch his wings but is always there in the background guiding him and giving life lessons. It’s important to remember though, too, that Dumbledore is Headmaster of a busy school not to mention all his other endeavors. He’s not their home room teacher. Principals rarely have this close of a relationship with students.
@@Hayzelle It's really annoying how he keeps calling Sirius "Silas." Come on!
Gotta give credit to Timothy Spall too
'Expecto Patronum' doesn't only makes shield, it's an 'Attack' spell that conjures a creature (made out of light), based on the wizard/witch, and attacks with it
Harry's was a Stag.

Thank you! We appreciate it 🤙 Really great to see the impact this franchise has had on people.
Thanks for check this one out, Manny! Keep the tidbits coming 👍
"This really makes me wanna read the books"
yes yes YES!!!
"Why do the Dementors keep going for Harry?"
It was hilarious to me that you guys were asking this question and speaking over the actual explanation you were looking for!
Also -
"Why does he keep giving him chocolate?!"
He just explained why! Each time he hands it out, he explains why. It helps. It's explained better in the books (of course) but he explicity, outright says - it helps.
That's our bad. We were too excited 🤣
@@BaddMedicine perfectly understandable. Looking forward to you reacting to the next films! :D

@@Ariadne4 it truly is especially Harry’s trauma and PTSD in later books the way it’s handled is amazing it rlly isn’t for kids
The Patronus charm usually takes the form of an animal. James' was a stag (just like Harry's). That's why he thought it was his dad at the lake
Harry thought it was his dad because everyone says Harry resembles his father.
@@toodlescae Exactly. Harry doesn't know about James connection to stags (patronus and animagus form).
I thought it only related to James' animagus form. Do we know that his patronus (if he even had one, they're hard to conjure) was a stag?
@@Xeno_Solarus Why not? Didn't he already know about the Marauders at that point? (I'm asking, I really don't remember)
@@sailiealquadacil1284 Well, the Patronus usually takes the same form as the Animagus, doesn't it? Since they're both connect to the person's soul and can't be chosen.
I love coming back to these early Potter reviews and watching Oak's transformation ❤
"whatchu doing down there?"
"I fell over"
"whatchu fell over for?"
"I didn't do it on purpose"
Bahahaha my favorite part of the movie surrounds this scene
Also my family and I quote this scene all the time.
“Well, Let’s not wait for the grass to grow.”
Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter have a connection that is never really explained in the movies.
I know -- I always want to point stuff out but I dont wanna spoil it for people who will eventually read the books so I keep it to myself
i read the books (like 10 years ago) and don´t see the conection --- besids of the Book5 proficie

Coming back to this one after watching you guys react to all the movies. It's so crazy to see the shift in Oak over only a couple months. I love it.
Potter head for life!
I love your reaction! You took me back to watching the movies with my granddaughter for the first time. You've made me smile and I can't wait to see the rest of the movies with you. So many twists and turns to be discovered.
Thank you Carol! We appreciate it and the kind words 🤙
The reason why Lupin give Choccolate to Harry is because it helps against depression but only for short term though. if Dementor fed on you for too long, even a truckload of chocolate won’t help you :D
Science fact : chocolate can affects your neurotransmitter, release dopamine and endorphins. which reducing anxiety and depression in the process. However, you might get addicted if you eat it literally everyday since you disrupt your innate natural neurotransmitter system, creates a new pattern for your brain. then your brain will keep demand it.
lmao
I'm wondering if it still effects you if you don't like chocolate?
I can definitely believe that chocolate is addictive. When I see chocolate I feel a strong urge to buy and eat it. Although I'm very disciplined and resist that urge very well. I eat it once a month, maybe less. But sure as heck love it!!
I always thought of chocolate in the Wizarding World as the home remedy for exposure to the Dementors, but home remedies might not be the best OVEREXPOSURE if you will.
@@aspannas Probably not, but most children do like chocolate, so likely not a common problem.
I'm new to your channel and watched your reaction to the 20th anniversary special first. It's been really fun binging your reactions after seeing what big fans you are now. Thank you for the kind words. It really cool to see a lot of not everyone will be sharing with their kids.
Silus Black! Every time Oak said Silus, that made me happy 😅. Plus when all you 3 say ‘this guy’ since day 1.. Love it!!
Great reaction. Loved your reaction to Buckbeak. Also the instant switch from childish joy at magic candy, to going full metalhead in unison!
Harry Potter and the Plot Twists of Azkaban is definitely still a great movie. This one and the next one might be a tie for favorite movies; it's so hard to choose, the older I get. Great reaction!
Thank you and thanks for watching🤙😁
42:09 about the deer:
It is not explained in the movie, but when the patronus charm is strong It takes on the shape of an animal, wich represents someone the person loves.

Perhaps someone already mentioned this: Remus in Roman mythology is one of two twins raised by a she-wolf. Lupus is Latin for wolf. Lupine is the adjective. Sirius is the name of the dog star. So Rowling dropped some hints for us.
Remus is wolf mcwolf basically
@@littlemisspsycho610 yup!
Snape was the one that let slip that lupin was a werewolf btw. He told the slytherins and news traveled fast
Anyways, so much fun seeing you react to this thing I grew up with :)
i was rewatching the movie last night and i think i yelled that about ten different times 😂 my mom was getting fed up with me
The analogy of fear (boggart) being finished by laughter is so good! Also, dementors are supposed to be the depiction of depression. It sucks your soul or your life out of you (wilting flowers), and you feel better when you have chocolate!
The Harry potter serie has so many quotes and beautiful lessons!! It is literally my all time favourite serie

Made me love this movie even more
Love the twists and turns in this movie with the time turner and who had actually betrayed the Potters.
True
BOOK SPOILERS!
The reason Lupin was able to know about the map was because he helped make it.
Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs are the makers of the Marauders Map.
Sirius Black, James Potter and Peter Pettigrew learned to be animagi to accompany Lupin while Lupin is a werewolf to make the transformation less worse. Dumbledore had planted the whomping willow and put in a secret entrance to the shrieking shack so that when Lupin was studying at Hogwarts, he could have used the shack during full moons.
Moony: Lupin
Wormtail: Pettigrew
Padfoot: Sirius
Prongs: James Potter (because his animagus was a stag)
Honestly my favorite book from the series when I was little, and probably my top 2 for the movies. It's the book/movie that makes the whole franchise take a massive dive into morality, intrigue, emotion, and lessons. You see how the series is not just about the mystical magic of growing up.
i like your insight regarding Dumbledore being the parental figure teaching harry lessons through experience which in retrospect makes a whole lot of sense

By the fourth movie however, there’s no hope
left anymore.
I am surprised not one of you picked up on Lupin's fear (boggart) being the moon or the plot device of only finding a piece of a body (Peter's finger)
I'm very excited for y'all to continue on this epic story!
Oh, we are invested! Lol. Just wait... You'll see. 😁 🤙 We appreciate the tidbit you dropped here🤙
This massive plothole is only in the movie, there was no such scene in the book.
@@noe3310 I know, I read the books. But it doesn't add much to what he is when Harry fought him because he never changes or have a moral doubt.
@@dogti2959 I know but I've watched the movies with people who haven't read the books and they don't understand almost nothing, so clearly there are parts that should be there
Thanks so much for your HP reactions. This is my second time through them and I'm enjoying them so much!
