    I worked in the office of a care home for many years and came to the conclusion that if you make decisions ahead, you have choices. If you wait until a crisis, you don't have choices. We are 60 & 65 and are looking very seriously at downsizing (no date decided yet) because of your videos. We had our children at a young age but they are waiting longer to have theirs. We had hoped to enjoy grandchildren in our current property that has a pool and lovely yard but you have really given us a whole new perspective that we have taken to heart.
    We definitely would like to own that book!👍
    Thank you for all the work you do putting together thought provoking and fun videos.

    Great points Tina and Norm. My mom moved to a 55+ campus seven years ago after my dad passed. They definitely stayed in their large home too long, into their early eighties. She was in an independent living unit for a few years then assisted living for a year and a half. She thought she wouldn’t like downsizing but ended up loving her life there even after moving into a small assisted living apartment. The campus was beautiful, people and staff were friendly and there were many activities to chose from as well as shopping and restaurants. She passed away recently and I have learned the wisdom of downsizing as one ages.

    We've experienced the pitfalls of helping our adult children financially. As parents, we always want to take away their pain and eliminate their problems by throwing cash at them. It's really hard to convince ourselves that it's actually harming them by not allowing them to figure out solutions to the problems they create.

      The problem with that is that my parents didn't help me when I REALLY needed it. I think parents with money (my parents would travel once a month) should ensure that their children have health insurance, at the minimum. There was a lot of resentment between us and now they are old and wonder why their children and other family members have abandoned them. That is the worst thing for elderly people. I don't think of them as family anymore and as far as I'm concerned, they're already dead.

    The money we got from selling our house, conservatively invested, more than pays the rent. Using round figures if you sell your house for 500,000 and get 4% return on the money that gives you 20,000 a year towards the rent. Plus you don't have property taxes, repairs and all the other costs associated with owning a house.
    On the other hand house prices have increased by a lot more so we couldn't get back into the housing market and a house gives more security against inflationary rent increases and market downturns. You have to be prepared to move from a rental if the landlord so wishes and that could be difficult and traumatic if you are frail.

    Very good video. My father-in-law made a good decision when he retired. He bought a condo in a good neighbourhood, on a bus line, near a shopping centre. When he died, his widow was in a comfortable situation that she could manage. In terms of decision making, I agree that as we age we can lose some insight. I think it is a good idea to have someone younger listen to our thoughts and see what they think about it.

    My husband and I sold our home here in the US and are downsizing from 4200 sq ft to a 1400 sq ft apartment. Whew! What a process it has been and I had tremendous difficulty with anxiety after we made the decision and it became real. We were both surprised at how emotionally fragile I became and I sought a therapist (at my daughter’s suggestion) and started taking an anti-anxiety medication. Now, I a, feeling better and the more we sell and give away, the freer we feel.
    Your comment about waiting too late to make such a move is so true. I am 70. If we had waited a few more years, my husband would not have been able to blast me out of this place and it would take our children months to clear out this home.

    The property prices in the UK have made downsizing a challenge, if we sell our 4 bed house we won’t have enough capital to downsize to a decent small apartment, renting really isn’t an option as rents are high and rising. I suggested that my kids built a granny annexe for us, they were horrified, I was joking😂

    I’m interested to know why you didn’t buy an apartment instead of renting one?
    We sold our big family home and we’re able to buy an apartment outright with the profit made after paying off the mortgage. Rents in Australia are huge for apartments and they’re not secure at all. You can be evicted at anytime as a renter. The rental increases currently are enormous. Maybe our system is different to yours? Wouldn’t it still be better to own an apartment? Our outgoings are quite minimal in comparison to a home. The utilities amounts are so much smaller living in an apartment too. Just curious?

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We didn’t want to own again as we wanted to get rid of home ownership and unexpected maintenance and expenses, renting to us is freedom of all that and we can just travel when we want. Having rent control is wonderful and what we pay is Grandfathered in from 7 years ago Cheers 🙂🍷🌺

    Weight loss is tough.The gift is retirement you will have time.
    If your able, eat home cooked whole food meals,
    (try to decrease processed foods)
    remove enriched white flour, and all process sugars.
    Walk, hike and think about a brisk walking pace.
    (Just thinking this, as you walk, will increase your tempo)
    Me 17-24 months later:
    Before: 237 lbs 5'10 39/41 inch waist high blood pressure 65 years old
    After: 164 lbs 5'10 32-34 inch waist now no meds and almost 67 year old
    Sound simple eh?~ Not~ Took me 25 years to get around to it!
    When the time is right you can do it.

    "Bank of mum and dad" is one thing, but what about being orphaned with two living parents? Certainly in my life my father lined his own pockets at the expense of being a responsible parent A millionaire with 5 kids who never supported them properly at all even as infants, and that the woman he ran away with didn't know he had until I showed up looking for my estranged father 25 years later!) at the neglect of his children (from age 3 in my case) my mum tried her best to care for us but she gave all her inheritance to her brother to gamble and drink away and it was a significant sum. Meanwhile the children have to fight over any little bit of inheritance they might have been entitled too because neither parent makes proper wills? Worse still the youngest of 5 (me) has to suffer at the hands of my elder siblings who had already learnt well in life that " know ones looking out for ya" to just steal what isn't nailed down in the family home fiddle the welfare system, fiddle critical illness benefit and a plethora of other sociopathic tendencies, grabbing whatever you can get your hands on because our parents ain't looking out for any of us properly, so it's dog eat dog, steal from your youngest brother, including their home, teach them a "REAL" lesson in life! How's that for a scenario that makes you "financially independent"? Is independent the right word? Or is it running scared of everyone? Because if your parents can do this to you, and then your siblings....who can you trust? Its a messed up my life well and truly. I never wanted kids because of the circumstance of my upbringing, so now I have utterly know choice but to take care of myself in every way possible, as knowone else is going too and so the cycle goes on. Well not in my case as I learned not to start a family. After all look at how they all treat each other!

    We are in a one floor house ! We made fun about scooting through this house in a wheelchair one day and thirty years later the time is almost here as the legs problem keeps getting worse ! I think I mite switch with my kids two bedroom two bathroom apartment and they take the house as my daughter loves the house so much ! She is our only child and In a short time I feel , we will have to make that decision for her , husband and two kids and our selves ! It will be a huge adjustment but at least we have that to consider ! They would just have to pay their mortgage to their bank until the apartment is payed for ! I will not contribute to that ! We helped them set it up with down payments on both side of their family! It is so hard to own a piece of real estate in Vancouver that if you like you child to be around in your life , you must try to help them and luckily we could do that ! The older you get the less money we spend ! We did only do one contribution when they bought their place and now it’s up to them . But the grand kids , they gets less too with spending money on them ! No more shopping with grandma as I can’t stand up for long ! Well for everyone it’s a different situation of course and we hope we get to stay a little longer in the house as husband loves to garden . But on the long whole , it looks that that plan mite have to become a reality one day if life permits us and as we get older ! How kind of the lady to send you the book ! And too bad it got to sit at your post box 8 months ! Let’s be unnest , you could of been on perfect weight for the sumner Norm and Tina ha ha just kidding ! Well I think that both of you are perfect already and at a older age don’t do any drastic dieting as things mite trigger ! Thank you for being here for us to compare and exchange stories! Having gone through 2 strokes since February this year you have to take better care of one's self. The high blood pressure is a factor now more so than before so eating better is the number one must do. I have learnt to cut out and or cut down the consumption of coffee, alcohol and red meats. Replacing them with more beneficial items like juices and teas and so on. It's hard to change your ways but it's your life you have to consider.

    I agree with you about downsizing but why not to buy a smaller apartment instead of renting it. I could still keep half of the money from the house for investments or cash. However, paying condo fees and property tax would still be cheeper than paying rent, so I would save money on housing cost. Plus the property value will keep appreciating so there will be a capital gain at the end which is another way to be invested and not to pay any tax at the end because it is my principal residence. Just wondering what are your thoughts on that route. Thanks for making great videos as always!

    Yeah running the same tyres for 12 years is a bad decision imo.
    Our son works for one of the big tyre mobs and conventional wisdom says that about 7 years is as long as you should run tyres even if they have plenty of tread left.
    We just swapped the tyres on the rev limiters vehicle as they were about that old even though they looked fine.
    You can actually tell when the tyres were produced from the marking on the side of the tyre.

    It is so true as you age you need your money. With high inflation here in Ireland we have noticed our pensions not stretching as far. So you have to be careful with your savings. We already lost a lot on Bank shares before we retired so it has made us cautious. We have no children but were always decent to nieces and nephews now adults. But we only give Christmas gifts now and there are two great nephews which we love buying items for. A car seat is now around 300 euro. But cheques for 1,000 euro, those days are well and truly gone. In fact, one nephew is extremely decent to us which we greatly appreciate.

    I have an elderly neighbor who owns a seasonal second home next door to my second home. It's difficult in that town to find anyone in any contractor or service based line of work that is reliable or isn't part of the "underground economy". It's all "cash".. So when I cut my grass, I cut her grass, when I snowblow my sidewalk and driveway I do hers etc. While I'm a tad bit younger than both of you, I'm kinda sorta thinking about future moves myself and looking at senior type apartment towers.(there's a long waiting list).Since home ownership especially when the home next door or across the street sells , possibly goes rental instead of owner occupied and the new neighbors turn out to be nightmarish , with barking dogs all day, loud music and possibly dealing drugs you look at different living options very quickly.

    Love you two; you are so funny. I remember my dad, quite a car guy, fixed up and gave one of my uncles and one of my cousins each a nice looking car. The guys kept the cars for a short time and traded them in on big, fast clunkers. Dad was so angry. I didn't get a car, because parents divorced ... I think of your friend in this light and wonder if he might want to talk to his granddaughter about his pride and joy. She might not view the car as such and might be happier with something else that he could buy for her, allowing him to keep the car he loves. Husband and I are older than you and we have chosen to continue living in a house. We purchased a much newer and more accessible house than the one we raised the kids in. Our thinking is that we own it, it is paid for, and no one can be the pain in the neck neighbor sharing a wall and no one can raise our rent (although taxes do go up) and no one can evict us. Two schools of thought, neither wrong. Thanks for a great video.

    I guess that finding an apartment that is in a larger more stable building is important. When I think of renting, my first thought is that of the dumpy low cost apartment that we stayed at trying to save up a down payment for a house back in the 80's. It was a 5 family house with the landlord living on the first floor and their adult daughter with her family on the 3rd. We and another couple had apartments on the 2nd floor. There was also a small studio apartment on the 1st floor. These landlords were like slum lords! Half the time I'd come home filthy from work to find that the water or hot water wasn't working. Being a tradesman myself I would offer to repair what it needed if they just paid for or obtained the parts. They always refused and the old guy who owned it would tinker around for days before it was patched. Luckily I had family in the next town where I could go to shower! It was a nightmare living as a tenant this way and the 80's were a housing bubble in the US. I finally found a place that needed a bit of work but gave me the chance to start. I put a lot of work into the place but it's my own. After renting under those conditions, I dread the thought of being a tenant again! It sounds like you have found a place that wouldn't present the problems that I did. After 36 years I'm starting to lose the enthusiasm of being a homeowner though I do prefer not to nave neighbors too close! 😊

    • @MILGEO
      @MILGEO ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThisIsOurRetirement I guess that it would depend upon where in Manhattan that you're talking about. I wouldn't want to live there, but would expect that most apartments would be smaller than in the suburbs.

    I’m so grateful we downsized from an acreage property in Sydney to an apartment in Melbourne by the sea, in our early 60’s. If either one passes the other one can easily adjust to the apartment that is already ‘home’. We can walk to every thing we need, it’s wonderful.
    I agree totally Re not continuing helping adult kids. I get tempted at times but realise our $$ won’t replenish and they need to make adjustments to their ‘lifestyle’ to cope better financially. It is good for them to learn that they don’t ‘need it all’ now!!

    My advice is when you give something treasured as a gift, don’t expect the receiver to have the same attachment. My 80+ dad gave a truck to my son who liked the gift but hated driving a big truck, paying a lot in gas and it did not fit into his building parking. Most of all, my son was busy with school and work and although he maintained the truck well it was not washed and waxed weekly like grandpa had. Most of all, my son wanted “his own” car, not driving grandpas pride and joy. Plus, to some people (my son as an example) a car or a house is NOT an extension of your identity, to others it is a tool, and you swap out tools as you need them to suit needs- especially when you are building your life and still forming that identity versus having a strong identity.

    That looks like a great Book Club read. The title alone would be fun to discuss with all the ladies. Enjoyed today's video. We have 6 children through our second marriage. We said right from the beginning we would not put ourselves in financial bind by helping them out. It has worked wonderfully and they are all living around the world and financially independent. It's difficult to say no but you have to. They might be unhappy at first but they begin to understand. Our parents were never in a position to help us out and to be honest we didn't want their help, we wanted to be independent. I see friends who are too generous and not struggling with their own situations.

    Story #3 is most important. Always look after ourselves first and foremost. Can't rely on family to look after you and reciprocate the good deed you did for helping them out financially. I know someone, a single mom who contributed her entire life savings to help her only child to buy his first condo. That son did not hesitate to kick her out to the street after she encountered conflicts with his lazy, stay-at-home girl friend who sleeps and smokes all day long.

    My husband and I agree (sort of) that we will need to move from our rural property to the nearby small city in the next 5 years or so. Having moved numerous elderly relatives who were in denial about their abilities left it too late, this is top of mind. But lately we are having second thoughts due to the astronomical rent increases in our area, and equally astronomical price increases for condos. It's a tough call.

  • @ddavidson5
    @ddavidson5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The knowing when to move is a tough one. We have been in our house 36 years, we moved here when our oldest daughter was 4 and our youngest had just turned 2 the month before. At 1,200 sq ft (111 sq metres) it's not a large house but has suited us for all these years though we did big reno 15 years ago so it was in tip top shape for our retirement. Now our grandchildren, 8, 6 and 1, come regularly to visit us at the same house their mothers grew up in. We both turn 70 this year and logically, in our minds, we know a move is coming in the next few years (to a condo maybe?) but it is daunting to think about actually moving. Honestly, I don't know how we'll finally decide it's time to move. Perhaps it's like knowing when to retire, one day you just know.

      It is a big move to downsize from the family home but we looked at it as a whole new chapter we were 60 and 58 it was time for new owners for our home . We have never looked back life is so different we can go travel whenever we want no stress or worries of home ownership it works for us . Yes you get the feeling you know it’s time to do it ( don’t leave it too long ) Cheers 🍷🌺🙂

      When we turned 70 we sold our house and moved to a beautiful adult community..still bought a new house, but facilities for grass cutting and snow clearing are readily available. About two years before we moved, we started getting rid of 'stuff' that we didn't need anymore, and really started emptying and decluttering our house, but we did it gradually and by the time we made our decision to move, it was so much easier...it is never too early to start the process...

      @@annekennedy8127after seeing this video, among others and just general thoughts, my wife and I had a good discussion about when to move. Current thinking is to move within the next 5 years, it will still be hard to leave the home we will have owned and loved for 40 years by then. We are only the 3rd owners of this 1958 house, it's a very stable neighbourhood we live in. When we moved in all those years ago almost all our neighbours on the street were still original owners, the woman next door, in her 90s now, is in fact an original owner. You don't see that much anymore.

      @@annekennedy8127 An update... We've been kicking around what to do knowing it was getting nearer to the time we should move but I have to say we were really unsure after going on 40 years in our current home. After this discussion, and on some other blogs I follow and participate on, we understood that for sure staying in your house too long can be a problem and we were getting to that point. We started looking at condos shortly after this video was posted and we quickly narrowed down what sort of condo we wanted and where. I am happy to say we have an accepted offer on an adult condo building about 2km from where we live now and our house goes up for sale next week. The cost of buying the condo is about 30% lower than what the real estate people valued our house at so even after expenses there should be cash in the bank at the end of the move. It's not even really a downsize as the condo square footage is about the same as our house. It's the right thing to do.

    But now just a one bedroom to rent is well over 2k. 😮 In addition, the average condo to buy is well over 700k!!
