Do things you enjoy NOW! My sister in law and I decided we were tired of waiting for a good time to go according to our spouses, from Minnesota to Wyoming to visit a sister. So she and I went alone. Took our time, stopped at every single attraction and ice cream shop in North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. What we didn't see on our way there, we made an effort to stop on the way back. Two 60+ ladies, on a road trip, staying at hotels with pools, eating great food! And ended up having a great visit with family. Do it NOW
Sounds like a wonderful trip Patty thanks for sharing it might give others thoughts on doing trips especially if their spouses don’t want to go Cheers 🇺🇸🙂🍁🇨🇦
I recently heard someone say, "Live your life in a way that you don't spend your whole year dreaming about your vacation. Build a life you don't have to escape." Not my words, but my husband and I have taken that as our philosophy.
Good advice. Very few people at the end of their life ever think that they should have saved more. However, many often regret the things they missed doing when they could have.
I’m 70 years old… will have four international trips this year to Costa Rica, Egypt , Portugal and Thailand and probably four next year… I travel with small groups and have friends in some of these countries....saved all my working years and want to spend it all till the last check bounces and I die….
I’ve been retired for 3yrs and have, just in the last month, realized that I need to start spending the money that my husband and I saved since we were in our 20’s. Great advice!
Lovely video guys. Great advice. I also think taking pleasure in the small things is also joy bringing. A special yearly treat for me is buying a new copy of A Christmas Carol, setting my alarm clock for 4am on Christmas Morning and reading it from start to finish, with my two sausage dogs curled up asleep by my side, and a huge bar of chocolate. The students in my school think I am such a ‘loser’ doing this, but it only encourages me further and makes me belly laugh. And then I set them extra homework. 😂
Years ago, I watched several older relatives struggle with spending and enjoying their savings. They grew up during the 1930s, and still had a thrifty mentality -- even with estates worth well into the millions and extensive land. I want to enjoy retirement!
living below ones means and investing before retirement especially can be difficult but is necessary, I've made a lot of money mistakes in the past but I don't regret it, as I have learned from them, now I just focus on S&P 500 and waiting for a few years.
in my case Chris Ryan Stewart has assisted me in doing that effectively, I'm not an expert so I lack experience in investment strategies, I work and my consultant handles the rest.
Honestly this cannot be overemphasized, helping people mitigate unforseen circumstances and mistakes .It's always good to have a financial plan, how can one get in touch
I can relate to your videos. We retired debt free as well but only started splurging this year. One was to book Club class with Air Transat on our upcoming trip to Portugal next spring. It feels so good to treat ourselves.
That is awesome! we have done the same as you Suzanne ✈️ on our trip to Portugal 🇵🇹 this Winter and yes it feels great enjoy your weekend Cheers 🇨🇦✈️🇵🇹🍁🙂
Great advice. We all need to hear it. I talk to so many people who are living frugally to save so they can leave money to their kids. I always ask them, "When your parents died, did it matter to you how much they left you or the wonderful times you had with them?" Everyone deserves a chance to make it own their own. Glad to hear you are getting good use of that mattress!!
I hired a financial advisor and got amazing suggestions. Well beyond what I anticipated. Love your channel. The go go years are ample. He cost 4k but a fantastic plan ... after tax over 60 k a year!!
I've just retired and I have acquired everything I want/need. In fact I'm trying to sell stuff as I have too much in my house. I just need to do my day today living. I'm going to touch my pension lump sum for travelling.
Good comments! Yes if you have any wealth, use a retirement planner(not just a financial advisor) but be careful about ones that want you to have enough money till you are 100! Target 90 or 95 at most.
Hi Tina and Norm. Great video as always. A few years ago when there were strains in family relationships we decided to stay in a hotel in as city close by over Christmas. We loved the 2 nights we were away. The hotel was downtown and we were tourists and we had Christmas dinner in the hotel. BTW, all is fine with family now, got the issues worked out. Another treat is meeting our daughter and her family for Brunch once a month in a city halfway between where we all live. I so look forward to seeing them so regularly. I was thinking the other day about my husband and I going to the movies again and making a special day of it. You can never have too much joy in your life. Take care, ❤️🇨🇦
So glad you enjoyed your Christmas getaway sounded really nice ,and that issues are ok now . We are going to be away for New Year Eve this year a first for us . Going to the movies 🎥 a great idea and very reasonable Herma Cheers 🙂🍁🍷🇨🇦
Great advice but since I am an accountant making the break from saving to spending requires a crowbar at times. We started with nothing so letting go of what we have saved is not so easy. Something we have discovered though is theatre, not far from us, that produces musical shows. We bought a subscription for 4 shows which we will be taking advantage of (Mary Poppins is in November). We are also going to Portugal/Spain in Feb. No use saving for my old age, I’m already there !
That sounds a great idea a Theatre subscription, We will be in Portugal 🇵🇹 this Winter too , we did think maybe some time in Spain as well this time what part do you go to and have you been there before ? thanks and Cheers 🇵🇹🙂🍁
This message is wasted on my husband- in a positive way! He is all for doing- spending and enjoying. His first wife died at 45 and has experienced that waiting is not an option to live and enjoy. We don't have endless finances but do plan well and even this morning husband mentioned a surprise lunch. I don't know where- except we need to go to Rotterdam. Exciting stuff. Enjoy life NOW.... happy Sunday you two. 🍾🥂🌺🇳🇱🙋♀🇳🇿
That’s wonderful Anita a surprise lunch Yippee 🥳, when I turned 65 in my birthday card was a hotel booking and we took off to Niagara Falls it was wonderful. Have a great weekend Cheers 🇳🇱🍷☕️🇨🇦🍁🙂
Portugal Treated ourselves. We just treated ourselved on a nice trip to Portugal. We treated ourselves to great restaurants (this time) and great wine. We even bought the box wine from the grocery store for the hotel rooms. Good tip Tina. Our next treat is our First EVER cruise. I've been holding back for years, even though my husband has wanted to go on a cruise. Well we're going to Alaska next year and we've been watching lots of cruise youtubes.
Another wonderful posting, Tina and Norm. You’re helping me get out of my reticence in spending the money I’ve taken a lifetime to accumulate. I appreciate you so very much.
I tried out traveling with my daughter and son in law this last year to see a broadway show and the sites. I booked a nice hotel and we had wonderful meals out and excursions. This is our Christmas rather than more stuff we don’t need in December. We had so much fun, and I can’t wait to plan another trip for next year with them. My tip for others is buy quality shoes and clothes, you will enjoy them more and not need to replace them so often. I’m also researching a down duvet to go on my new bed!! It gets very cold in winter here in Montana.
Hi Tina & Norm, While living in Germany and enjoying 30 days of PTO, we did not have to household our time off, neither did we think about saving for the old age. There was no concept of 401K; employers contribute to your pension and (most of them ) pay you extra pay in June to incentivize employees to take time off. Another extra salary was paid in December. When we moved to the US, I was lucky enough to negotiate 4 weeks of PTO, so we kept traveling but started to contribute to 401K. We are not so worried about how long our saving would last- Just came back after spending four weeks in Spain.
Last Thursday visited Toronto CN tower. Talked to two ladies touring from Australia while waiting to get in. Will fly back to Toronto hopefully next fall to see more. Need more cool weather. Mary from Phoenix.
Value oriented spending has been my lifelong moto. These habits continue to create wonderful memories and I cherish every last one. Assuming pension pays all living expenses and weekend getaways. Partition the nest egg, % to leave to family and causes, the rest for lifelong leisure. This is wonderful problem to have.
Good ideas there, Tina and Norm: (1) Last month I did splurge on a $1,600 mattress to replace my 1990 too-soft mattress. (2) "Joy" ? Great goal: my last joy might have been in 1985. But we all do get a bit of joy listening to people who are experiencing joy (like your vlogs)!
Well, i went out this morning and purchased a new pair of winter boots that were on sale. I also bought a new pillow and mattress. My body will appreciate it!
I could not agree more re treating oneself on occasion and living debt free. I struggled with shifting from saving to spending initially, however, and notwithstanding a relatively generous DB pension, plunging stock markets have been a rude awakening when investments you are presently living off of are tanking. So saving has remained necessary once again. This all said, my travel budget is sacrosanct, so savings have to be identified elsewhere.
Even though the stocks we have are down they are still paying good dividends 👍we also have a travel budget which we spend from then it seems to be getting topped back up which is awesome.Hope you have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍁🙂🍻
Thanks for another great video. My husband and I just signed on for an Alaskan adventure cruise and rail tour. I think he hardest part was just deciding to let go and go for it! You are an encouragement.
Great advice. I would say make the most of what you have,; friends, opportunities, volunteer work, whatever it may be that you enjoy. Not going to work frees up so much time that you can actually save money on the things you do; you can choose when you do things and maybe walk rather than drive somewhere for example. We’ve saved money on holidays/vacations by going Wednesday rather than Saturday for example. This allows your money to go further and you to do more. Devoting time to your passions often opens up more opportunities for you too in my experience. Friends you know have friends or colleagues is where I’m coming from here. Don’t put things off either. If you want to do something, go for it. No one knows what’s waiting around the corner for us. Not to do something and later find you can’t do it, due to poor health or whatever, will only lead to deep regret down the line. The more you do, the more joy you will find and you’ll have better mental health and be happier. Sit around, do nothing and you’ll quickly become miserable.
Last year my BFF and I went to a spa for 2 nights. What a treat! It was only $500 (includibg a fantastic massage treatment) and we decided this is something we should do annually. Also, in our area there are nice restaurants that have "couples' special date night" menus, a lovely night out for me and my partner. He and I used to spend Suoer Bowl weekend in Niagara Falls in a jacuzzi suite and watch the game from the tub. 😁
I love hearing from both of you. Funny, I was just going to order a new mattress, and then I heard you mention it. I take that as an omen to do it. Keep up the good work.
Your video are so relevant all the times, you guys should be on TV as a public services. Thanks for the great work you are doing I don t miss any of your videos. I am retiring next year at 64 theses are all the questions we have! Don t think the wife will have a hard time to be a spender ahahah! Keep up the good work!
I upgraded my stereo by replacing all of my interconnects and speaker cable with Nordost Heimdall2 and Nordost Frey2 interconnects and cable. It was expensive, but I love the improved sound quality. A couple months ago, I bought an original painting by Edward Hopper. It's great to think that someone as great as Hopper handled the painting and painted on the canvas. That being said, the world is currently in turmoil due to problems in the Middle East, Ukraine, and elsewhere; I just took all my savings out of stocks and bonds, and I moved them to money market accounts; I'm still up about 25% this year, but now is time to sit tight, and accept the 5% or so that I'll get in money markets.
Sounds great Bruce yes there is a lot of unrest going on in the world 🌎 that makes us really appreciate where we are and what we have so life is good Cheers 🍁🙂☕️
Great suggestions Tina and Norm. We’ve been on four road trips since August and definitely are spending on nice hotels/condos and really enjoy splurging on those wonderful hotel restaurant meals. Next is a new 55” TV to replace our 15 year old smaller TV. Quality towels and bedding are a must as they feel so wonderful next to the skin. We don’t have a problem spending but do find that we are satisfied with fewer material things at this stage of our lives.
Thank you for your insightful and informative comments. I look forward to every Saturday. My wife and I are both retired with good pensions. We have been careful with our investments and have saved judiciously. We travel to Europe, South, and visit our children in western Canada often. I think that the biggest challenge to spending our savings is getting past the habit of increasing our funds to be ready for that “rainy day”. It’s the way that we were brought up by our parents who lived on little, and were always striving to make and keep their money. Your comments, strategies, and tips are very much appreciated. Cheers.
Such a great video with wonderful advice! We only get one shot at living. My colleagues are jealous that I am retiring but I told that you have to find joy in each day and not wait for retirement to do it. My husband and I always set aside money for travel and doing the things we love. If I die tomorrow, I have no regrets about how I have lived. Cheers to both of you! ❤
I am not able to spend that much, wind up saving the extra money. My husband can’t travel right now, until he gets better. 😢 Nevertheless, I completely agree. Do spend your money and enjoy your life.
Agree with spending more on experiences, as well as anything that enhances health (exercise classes/equipment, personal training, hiking poles, healthy food, self care, etc. ). Spending money on more “things” (unless functional) is definitely not the answer, especially since you will struggle to get rid of those things later…
Love your videos. One comment regarding mortgage debt... if you have a mortgage at a super low interest rate you can invest that money in a high interest savings right now and make money instead of paying off the mortgage. This won't always be the case but it was for us when we retired last year.
True, but paying off the mortgage by the time you retire makes your outflows quite low, which is a very secure feeling and lowers stress a lot. Now we spend the $2000 per month on travel which is way more fun, but optional should money get tight.
We are just starting this adventure and it is SO WEIRD to think about spending money instead of running around tight fisted all the time. But I think you are spot on. We are working on allowing ourselves to do the fun things that are not extravagant and are repeatable, like finally getting to spend time at our favorite resort town three hours away often. This is huge!!! And fun! Buying a car is another issue and I don't think we have that one figured out yet.. :D Thanks for another interesting topic. It really is nice to know we are not the only ones out there doing this lifestyle.. :)
So glad you enjoyed the video Jan and welcome to retirement learning how to spend your money 💰 isn’t easy we are still working at that LOL 😂 Cheers 🍁🙂🍷
Decumulation has been my husband and myself’s biggest challenge since retirement. We have been good savers, own our modest home and have no debt. Our challenge is feeling a bit fearful about spending too much of our savings too quickly. After the surprises (Covid/shocking interest rates) of the last few years, we do wonder if we will have enough to last a lifetime.
Another awesome and very wise advices, I also bought my car using cash and no more monthly payments...!!! Many Thanks Norm & Tina. Have a wonderful weekend.
My back of envelope calculation is that in Canada so long you contribute to RRSP on a consistent basis throughout entire working life, there is really nothing to worry about financially for retirement. After retirement, considering there is no more RRSP and CPP to contribute, there actually could be more money in the pocket to spend than during working time.
I’m a lifelong penny-pincher and have a hard time spending money. Especially in today’s economy. But lately I’ve decided to splurge on a few items while I can still afford it. I’m even thinking of replacing my 30 y/o couch since I watch so many TH-cam videos on it. I won’t be buying a $20K cruise though!
Thanks so much Denise I actually bought it when we were in Portugal 🇵🇹 I too love the colour and the moto Positive Mood on it , have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🇵🇹🍷🇨🇦🍁🙂
You guys are awesome. I always look forward to your new episodes and insights. I laughed when you talked about bustin the bank on your cruise! 😂 I know that feeling, but still…like you say,it’s the experiences that are a privilege to have in retirement.
I am a widow who is doing more for me after spending most of my looking after others. I am the things that make me happy. I rent a huge lake house for my kids and grandkids to spend a week with me there. It was awesome, they all live far from me but foe a weeks we shared our lives together. I will do this again. I just got home from a Tennessee road trip. I did not want to do a tour as they take you where they want you to go! I needed a travel companion so I invited my Sister to join me! Best decision ever, we spend 10 days doing it all. I get such a good feeling when I buy big bags of groceries for the food bank or for my church pantry! I like to buy flowers for my friends and me! Eat well..good food, good nutrition, pay for exercise classes, pay for art classes, go to the movies, buy new clothes. I’m special and plan to treat myself special in these years.
Now I'm confused guys. Last week you told me to save, so I opened a Tangerine Savings account and bought Canadian Bank stocks ,which are trading at 52 week lows and paying 7.5 % dividend. Have to admit, the bank stocks was own volition. This week you're telling me to spend lol . All kidding aside , will take some of that Tangerine money and travel. So enjoyed the Zephyr , am planning the rocky Mountaineer from Banff to Vancouver and the big holiday will be the Bernina Express in the Alps. Love your confusing videos guys !
Oh but just think of all the dividends that those Canadian banks will be paying 💰to fund those great trips LOL 😂 ,we are still not sure about the Rocky Mountaineer let us know how you like it have an awesome weekend Cheers 🚂🍻🍁🙂
@@ThisIsOurRetirement 💕👍🇨🇦think I’ve spent entirely too much time thinking about Bank dividends You did the Canadian this year guys . So a couple of days in Banff and the Mountaineer to Vancouver will be not too shabby a substitute Have a wonderful weekend guys 🍷🍺💕
Such a timely video as I was making a list of things to ask my advisor next week!! He and I talk every year when it is time for my RMD. I have a separate savings account from my 401k etc and am debt free. I need to think about a “new to me” used car as mine has over 210k miles-runs perfect, but I’m starting to fear getting stuck at a very inopportune time! I could pay cash for a gently used car -but family is pushing me to get a loan. The thought of payments makes me ill… so my advisor will have to help! I do agree it’s time to cut the strings a tiny bit and spend some-and asking him about an amount that is sensible is so good and one I had not thought to ask! Very sensible advice from you two, as usual! Thanks and I enjoy your channel!
Great advice again you two. We just completed an assessment with a Advice Only Financial Advisor for which we paid a fee and I wish we had done this sooner. We now have a detailed plan that we can live with and there was no "sell job", which is usually what happens with the other kind of Advisors, who are part of a financial or investment institution. We were happily surprised to find that we could indeed spend more per month/year than we had initially thought and are ready to inject some more "joy" into our lives on a regular basis.
One subject you might want to talk about... Should we buy something overseas or Mexico, careibean and what happen with succession when we r gone? Best advice etc...
Thanks for the suggestion , as countries policies change what might seem like paradise to begin with could suddenly be a nightmare and renting gives you the ability to change location quickly Cheers Michel 🙂🍁
Our plan is to spend the 10 years 60-70 the go-go years. We’re now almost 66. From 70+ travel insurance is much higher so we won’t do such adventurous trips after that…. and from 80+ we won’t travel as much. Well that’s the plan…
That is a similar plan to us, we do have travel insurance that will take us to 75 as it’s an annual travel medical plan. Good luck with your pension application, Tina applied in December and hasn’t heard back yet.
@@ThisIsOurRetirement in the UK we can apply from 4 mths prior to being 66. Outside of the UK I think the wait is 11 mths at the moment but it’ll be backdated.
Wow 😱 11 months and Tina was 66 in April 2023 , guess we were lucky Norm applied 4 months before he was 66 and got his very fast , but that was 3 years ago 🙂
Hi Tina and Norm :) Your fan Mary here from Toronto, ON. Awesome video. Yes!, Agree, spend your hard earned $$$money$$$. That cruise you just took will stay with you both forever. Hubby and I do have a few trips planned for next year. We're not huge travellers meaning when we go away .. LOL! I get homesick. Well we can't leave for too long as we have aging parents. Ok you two lovebirds, have a great rest of your weekend and a great week to all! Mary :)
Hi guys. Looking great as usual. Still watching as I type.....I must say I have very little trouble spending ......I need to make sure I have enough to last to 90, based on my genes!!!! It's great to have money and peace of mind, too. I'm aware of the Go-Go, Go-Slow, and No-Go scenario, too. Take care of yourselves. 👍🎃👊
I am just wondering if the cruise you took to Iceland recently ended up costing you more than you had expected? Looking at the fine print it seems the price they charge does not even include?gratuities and sometimes other charges we were charged!
Hey 👋 Norman & Tina! You’re such a fun couple. You respect one another and enjoy doing things together. Many of our activities take us in opposite directions; shopping is one, home improvement is another. Have you always done things together beyond traveling? Money isn’t the issue for us, agreeing on the basics is, as we are different people with our own ideas. Okay, TMI. Enjoyed the video. Do you prefer American or Canadian football more? Or soccer?
Hi Eric, First off I hadn’t seen the stain on the blue golf shirt I wore on last weeks video 😂😂 So a big thank you for your Dawn tip, it worked! I do prefer the rules of CFL but enjoy the more competitive teams of the NFL, The Buffalo Bills around here are regarded as Canada’s team, my son is a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan. If you like sports read Bill Cowhers book, it’s a good life and football story. We have always been best friends and seen eye to eye on most things, but nowadays we do everything together. Great to hear from you again today!
@@ThisIsOurRetirement We watch more Manchester United & European FC(soccer), and March madness college basketball. Okay, time to do laundry. Yah, I do that, lol 😂
I did a retirement course and made my own cash flow plan with Meaningful Money (UK though..Pete Matthew) which is great, but I think an advisor towards retirement is a good idea. Do your budget and add 20% is Pete experience!! Those views from the 41st floor are amazing, I think I would have passed out from fright thou 😂
Can you please tell me what you use for your VPN security on your devices? We need to get set up and I can't find your previous video you shared regarding this.
Hi Jennifer We use NordVPN, the offer is still valid here: 🌏 Take advantage of this exclusive offer from NordVPN here ➼ nordvpn.com/ourretirement Risk-free with NordVPN's 30-day money-back guarantee!
I'm holding off on the new mattress- until I decide if I'm selling or staying where I am... one thing's for sure... although it had a few years left, it’s not moving with me! Im 2 months into a three month solo trip to Europe. It's been great clearing my head and unraveling the years of stress. So good that I booked a cruise for the return trip across the pond... and am planning my return to walk the Camino de Santiago again. I feel like a completely different person 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I have been watching Virgin River and I’m into season 3 and I think I hit a wall. I can usually watch a show for a season or two for the characters, but maybe there is too much emotional stuff and not enough car chases for me. I do like that it’s filmed near Vancouver on Bowen Island though
I totally agree BUT Retirement is most a mind thing. I am always thinking, retiring before 60, how long do I have to enjoy live. When do I start government pensions?? How much how much. Came home from a trip to Mexico, was only hours from seeing the Monarch butterflies. Should have spent the money to see it again. Its hard to believe that the market will stay this good and cranking our money, I spend more money than I ever did before Retirement and my account keeps growing. But I like you have said before, your videos are just to cause discussion.
Luckily my mattress is good. I agree they are important. Money in retirement is a really tricky business as there are variables which you can't always quantify. How long your retirement will be.... and how much your savings will grow by are the main two variables in my equation. Personally, I think spending money on 'experiences' is my priority. Visiting somewhere I want to go, or seeing a show. I want to re-visit Thailand in January. That is my next biggie! And I want to do another music show. I last went to a big concert in 2019. I saw Roger Hodgson (he was most of SuperTramp) at the Albert Hall in London. I haven't been to a major music show like that since because of the pandemic. I want to see another class act again soon! I must look up who is playing.......Bryan Adams is playing in the UK next May! I also want to see Jon Anderson.
Hello from Saskatoon, Bernie my wife and I watch you on the regular. Thank you for all your wisdom. I ( Dennis) am confused. I went to service Canada website to get my ETIAS forms. It states there that it isn't being invoked until 2025. I went for forms because of your January 2024 update. Has the date been bumped back? Cheers
Yes it has been bumped! In fact it has been bumped multiple times in the past. We felt this 2024 they would do it, that’s why we made the video, then they bumped it…….probably because of our video 😂😂
Hi Tina and Norm, great advice, as always! Just wondering about your earlier recommendation regarding NordVPN as a smart expense.... is your link still valid?
Hello, I love your videos and information, I'm 63 divorced a long time now , I'm ready to retire in about 1 year, I want to sell my house to fund my retirement I have alot of equity , I luve on long island, new york. I will have social security which I'm taking at 65 a little early and a small pension . I'm in my healthy years and want to travel and be a nomad for awhile. Im not sure what will be my home base moving forward, that's my story haha, I always wanted to go to Portugal and want to stay a few months where do you recommend staying. Thank you Carol
my husband is 12 years younger than me . I am 65 and want to travel and do things now because by the time he retires I may not be able to do things. I also have chronic illnesses. Am I being selfish in wanting to do these things now?
Like all things in marriage Alexis, this needs a heart to heart discussion and both of you need to be able to compromise, but no we don’t think you are selfish. Good luck!

Very true Harvey thanks for making this point!
I’m 70 years old… will have four international trips this year to Costa Rica, Egypt , Portugal and Thailand and probably four next year… I travel with small groups and have friends in some of these countries....saved all my working years and want to spend it all till the last check bounces and I die….
Sounds wonderful we hope you enjoy all your planned trips Cheers 🍷🙂🍁
Please find a friend to go with you, it is more enjoyable.
I love this couple, very gentle and always up lifting! They never fail to make me smile.
You are so kind
Best video yet! We retirees need to be reminded that "responsible" joy (& what it means to us individually) is what makes life worth living!
We are so glad you enjoyed it have a wonderful weekend and thanks for watching Cheers 🍷🍁🙂🍻
Responsible joy! Wow! That is perfect!
I’ve been retired for 3yrs and have, just in the last month, realized that I need to start spending the money that my husband and I saved since we were in our 20’s. Great advice!
Your very welcome Lisa have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🙂🍷🍁
Lovely video guys. Great advice. I also think taking pleasure in the small things is also joy bringing. A special yearly treat for me is buying a new copy of A Christmas Carol, setting my alarm clock for 4am on Christmas Morning and reading it from start to finish, with my two sausage dogs curled up asleep by my side, and a huge bar of chocolate. The students in my school think I am such a ‘loser’ doing this, but it only encourages me further and makes me belly laugh. And then I set them extra homework. 😂
Wow sounds wonderful Andrew , and you get the last laugh 😂 more homework for them enjoy your weekend Cheers 🍁🙂🍻
Years ago, I watched several older relatives struggle with spending and enjoying their savings. They grew up during the 1930s, and still had a thrifty mentality -- even with estates worth well into the millions and extensive land. I want to enjoy retirement!
We understand it is very hard to shift gear from save to spend , we are learning fast on how to enjoy our retirement more while we can Cheers 🍻🍁🙂

Norm I want two video requests.
1. How did you and Tina meet.
2. Review your favorite rock groups and why
Thanks for the suggestions enjoy your weekend Cheers 🍻🍁🙂
Great advice. We all need to hear it. I talk to so many people who are living frugally to save so they can leave money to their kids. I always ask them, "When your parents died, did it matter to you how much they left you or the wonderful times you had with them?" Everyone deserves a chance to make it own their own. I hired a financial advisor and got amazing suggestions. Well beyond what I anticipated. Love your channel. The go go years are ample. He cost 4k but a fantastic plan ... after tax over 60 k a year!!
Fantastic! sounds like the advisor really worked well for you which is great Cheers Johnny 🍻💰🙂
@@ThisIsOurRetirementYes money 💰 where I didn't even know can manifest from various small investments.
I've just retired and I have acquired everything I want/need.
In fact I'm trying to sell stuff as I have too much in my house.
I just need to do my day today living.
I'm going to touch my pension lump sum for travelling.
Congratulations 🥳 on your retirement sounds a great plan happy travels Cheers 🙂🍁

@@pensacola321 That's the plan.
Good comments! Yes if you have any wealth, use a retirement planner(not just a financial advisor) but be careful about ones that want you to have enough money till you are 100! Target 90 or 95 at most.
Thanks for sharing Randolph Cheers 🙂💰🍁
It is a change of mindset. For all our adults lives it has been save save save. A good mattress is definitely worth the money!
Agreed a great nights sleep 😴 is priceless, have a wonderful weekend guys Cheers 🇺🇸☕️🇨🇦🍻🍁🙂

Sounds wonderful, have many happy trips!
Another wonderful posting, Tina and Norm. You’re helping me get out of my reticence in spending the money I’ve taken a lifetime to accumulate. I appreciate you so very much.
Our pleasure! it’s hard Bruce to learn to spend on yourself as we are finding out LOL 😂Cheers 🇺🇸🍻🇨🇦
Sounds like a great idea Janet for Christmas thanks for sharing Cheers 🇺🇸🍁🇨🇦🍻🍷
Hi Tina & Norm, While living in Germany and enjoying 30 days of PTO, we did not have to household our time off, neither did we think about saving for the old age. There was no concept of 401K; employers contribute to your pension and (most of them ) pay you extra pay in June to incentivize employees to take time off. Another extra salary was paid in December. When we moved to the US, I was lucky enough to negotiate 4 weeks of PTO, so we kept traveling but started to contribute to 401K. We are not so worried about how long our saving would last- Just came back after spending four weeks in Spain.
Thanks for sharing your story.
I strongly suggest that if you use financial advisor make sure they are certified,CFP.
Thanks for sharing Patrick Cheers 🍻🙂🍁💰
Last Thursday visited Toronto CN tower. Talked to two ladies touring from Australia while waiting to get in. Will fly back to Toronto hopefully next fall to see more. Need more cool weather. Mary from Phoenix.
Glad you had a good visit to Toronto Mary our weather is cooler now LOL 😂although just went for an hours walk and it was beautiful Cheers 🇺🇸🙂🍁🇨🇦🍷
A great philosophy to live by!
That’s nice to hear , hope you are sleeping 🛌 better now also remember to turn the mattress during the year that helps to Cheers 🍁🙂💰🛌
Well, i went out this morning and purchased a new pair of winter boots that were on sale. I also bought a new pillow and mattress. My body will appreciate it!
That is awesome! we hope you enjoy them all and sleep 😴 better Clarita Cheers 🍷🛌🍁🙂
I agree Tina. I really like Virgin River. Great show. I’ve binge watched every season so far!! 😎👍🏻
That’s great Violet I (Tina) need to watch the latest season Cheers 🙂🍁
Spending Winter in Honolulu!!
Sounds great Frank we will be Portugal 🇵🇹 this year Cheers 🇺🇸✈️🇨🇦🙂
Thanks for another great video. My husband and I just signed on for an Alaskan adventure cruise and rail tour. I think he hardest part was just deciding to let go and go for it! You are an encouragement.
That is awesome! Have a great time.
@@ThisIsOurRetirement You two are my heroes!
Great advice Andrew, thanks so much for sharing it with us!
Love your gold shirt and necklace, Tina! So lovely!!
Thank you so much! have a great weekend Dian Cheers 🙂🍁
100% agree on being debt free, no debts and no mortgage for several years now for me. Being worry free is being healthy and satisfied with life.
Well said Mike have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍻🍁🙂
Last year my BFF and I went to a spa for 2 nights. What a treat! It was only $500 (includibg a fantastic massage treatment) and we decided this is something we should do annually. Also, in our area there are nice restaurants that have "couples' special date night" menus, a lovely night out for me and my partner. He and I used to spend Suoer Bowl weekend in Niagara Falls in a jacuzzi suite and watch the game from the tub. 😁
They all sound great ideas of enjoying yourselves, Tina went for a massage last week and loved it ❤️Cheers 🍁🙂☕️

Wow, thank you! glad you enjoy our videos Michel Cheers 🍁🙂🍻
Thanks! Wonderful content. I think helping people feel good about not just when to retire but what to do once you do retire is wonderful!
Thanks so much Debbie glad you enjoyed it Cheers 🍁🙂☕️
A Hopper!! Congratulations! It's nice to surround ourselves with beautiful art when we can - and the sound of music!
Sounds great! some great suggestions Cherry thanks for sharing have a wonderful week Cheers 🍁🙂🍷
Cheers.
Thanks so much John glad you enjoy our videos have a great weekend Cheers 🙂🍁🍻
You two are awsome, thanks for the inspiration,❤
Our pleasure!
Glad you enjoyed it Sandra have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍁🙂🍷
I am not able to spend that much, wind up saving the extra money. My husband can’t travel right now, until he gets better. 😢
Nevertheless, I completely agree. Do spend your money and enjoy your life.
We hope your husband gets better soon have a nice weekend 🍁🙂
Agree with spending more on experiences, as well as anything that enhances health (exercise classes/equipment, personal training, hiking poles, healthy food, self care, etc. ). Spending money on more “things” (unless functional) is definitely not the answer, especially since you will struggle to get rid of those things later…
Yes we agree Kirstin
Love your videos. One comment regarding mortgage debt... if you have a mortgage at a super low interest rate you can invest that money in a high interest savings right now and make money instead of paying off the mortgage. This won't always be the case but it was for us when we retired last year.
Thanks for sharing! have a great weekend Kim 💰🙂🍁
True, but paying off the mortgage by the time you retire makes your outflows quite low, which is a very secure feeling and lowers stress a lot. Now we spend the $2000 per month on travel which is way more fun, but optional should money get tight.
Thank you so much, I enjoy your videos each week and we are planning a trip to Portugal next year in May.
Glad you like them! we hope you enjoy Portugal 🇵🇹 Jennifer we love visiting there have a great weekend Cheers 🍁🙂🍷
Good advice. So here we are now preparing for our yearly winter snow birds escape to Portugal. When will we hear about your next stay in Portugal?
Thank you JP, we will be in Portugal this winter 🇵🇹
Another awesome and very wise advices, I also bought my car using cash and no more monthly payments...!!! Many Thanks Norm & Tina. Have a wonderful weekend.
Glad you enjoyed it Terry have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍁🙂🍻
My back of envelope calculation is that in Canada so long you contribute to RRSP on a consistent basis throughout entire working life, there is really nothing to worry about financially for retirement. After retirement, considering there is no more RRSP and CPP to contribute, there actually could be more money in the pocket to spend than during working time.
Thanks for sharing funny how that be ! Cheers 💰🍁🙂
Lovely necklace and pendant Tina. I’ve been snacking and preparing my body for winter. Have to be careful not to overdo it
Thank you Vic have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍷🍁🙂🍻
I’m a lifelong penny-pincher and have a hard time spending money. Especially in today’s economy. But lately I’ve decided to splurge on a few items while I can still afford it. I’m even thinking of replacing my 30 y/o couch since I watch so many TH-cam videos on it. I won’t be buying a $20K cruise though!
We think a new couch 🛋 is a great idea we did that about a year ago Michael Cheers 🙂🛋🍻

That’s wonderful Teresa. so glad you are enjoying some great things and yes we need to put ourselves first and treat us Cheers 🍷🙂🍁

Thanks and I enjoy your channel!

could you do a video on the differences between a financial advisor and an estate planner
Hello Murray, We are not qualified to comment on this, even though it's a good question. Thank you.
Hard to freely spend when stocks and bonds seem to be going down with no end in sight. People generally feel richer when the markets are doing well.
True but although our stocks are down we are still getting great dividends which adds up Barry together with government pensions Cheers 💰🍁🙂☕️
That sounds great Susan and you can now look forward to great “Joy” in your life Cheers 🍷🍁🙂

I am just wondering if the cruise you took to Iceland recently ended up costing you more than you had expected? Looking at the fine print it seems the price they charge does not even include?gratuities and sometimes other charges we were charged!
Ours included everything Mary 🚢 🙂

I found the books more enjoyable and realistic.
Agreed it’s nice that it is filmed in Canada 🇨🇦 , enjoy your weekend Ken Cheers 🙂🍁🇨🇦
Thanks for sharing Mary 🍁
I totally agree
BUT
Retirement is most a mind thing.
I am always thinking, retiring before 60, how long do I have
to enjoy live.
We are with you on having experiences your list sounds amazing Cheers 🍁🙂🍻
Hello from Saskatoon, Bernie my wife and I watch you on the regular. Thank you for all your wisdom. I ( Dennis) am confused. I went to service Canada website to get my ETIAS forms. It states there that it isn't being invoked until 2025. I went for forms because of your January 2024 update. Has the date been bumped back? Cheers
Yes it has been bumped! In fact it has been bumped multiple times in the past. We felt this 2024 they would do it, that’s why we made the video, then they bumped it…….probably because of our video 😂😂
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it Gregory have a great weekend Cheers 🍁🙂

I will have social security which I'm taking at 65 a little early and a small pension . I'm in my healthy years and want to travel and be a nomad for awhile. Im not sure what will be my home base moving forward, that's my story haha, I always wanted to go to Portugal and want to stay a few months where do you recommend staying. Thank you Carol
If you want winter stays in Portugal look at the Algarve, if it’s in summer look at the Silver Coast
my husband is 12 years younger than me .
Good luck!
If you don't drink champagne your kids will.😂😂😂🥂🍾
