    So, this is my first ever Marshall Amp. When I purchased it, I was on a very limited budget and the price point for this Amp was right on point.
    Yes, it (technically) has four channels but there's a trick to getting this to work properly.
    1. You have to ditch the 2-button footswitch that comes with the amp and either get the PEDL-91016 (which is next to impossible to find!) or get a budget MIDI controller. I use the TECH-21 MIDI Mongoose with the Rocktron 7-Pin MIDI Cable.
    2. Tweak the MASTER Volumes in such a manner that you can control all (4) channel levels with relative ease.
    The "Classic Gain" Channel RED is much louder than the GREEN. So I did this:
    ** Classic Gain Channel GREEN - Assign this to MASTER 1
    ** Classic Gain Channel RED - Assign this to MASTER 2
    Tweak this channels' volumes FIRST. Get both the GREEN (MASTER 1) and RED (MASTER 2) the same volume
    across Classic Gain Green and Red.
    The "Ultra Gain" Channel GREEN and RED are just about the same Volume.
    **Assign BOTH GREEN and RED to MASTER 1
    (or MASTER 2, really doesn't matter)
    Now that the "Classic Gain" is tweaked - and both GREEN and RED on the "Ultra Gain" Channel are assigned...
    Use MASTER 1 and MASTER 2 to adjust volume levels on the "Classic Gain" channels.
    Use the Channel Volume on the "Ultra Gain" channel to adjust volume levels for both GREEN and RED here.
    It's not 100% Perfect, but I find that the Amp is very much gig'able with this configuration.
    Give it a shot!!!

    I have checked a lot of demos but you gave justice to the clean aspects of this amp as well the crunch channel.
    Thank you very much ❤️.

    Have just bought DSL40 CR Cream Levant as a return with a nice discount, full guarantee, not a slightest signs of use (can´t imagine why anyone bought it, gave it a run a bit and returned to the shop). Long story short: bought PEDL 91016 (remembers your last master volume choice for each channel), instead of a pile of "mouse traps" I use BOSS ME80 and I´m in bluesrock/hardrock heaven...great sound on all 4 channels, simple setting, the pedalboard simple as 1-st grade class calculus, great vintage look of the Cream Levant version...last but not least thanks Andy for your perfectly helpful review...

    I bought this amp a few months ago. I love the amp. It has a LOT of low end. I think I'm going to get a AC30 soon as more suitable pedal platform. Might run the Marshall and Vox in Stereo. On the DSL40CR I found it helps a lot to run the time based effects (Reverb, Delay, Phaser, etc) through the FX Loop on the back to by pass the pre-amp tubes. Running time based effects with a lot of overdrive through the front end gets muddy. (I play mostly Gibson LPs)

    • @alwaysandy_
      @alwaysandy_  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Always run those types of effects in the loop. AC30 + DSL = bad ass stereo rig. 💥

    I've had many a Marshall amp in my day. I just got this one today and DUDE!! Its very awesome and takes pedals in the front end very well. Although if youre not really pedal person youll do almost any kind of music, from gospel clean to metallica metal without any pedals at all. BUT... add a EH Metal Muff and youre in pure Pantera heaven!!!!! I got the cream tolex one. Not only does it play and sound awesome but it looks very retro 80s too. Just for reference Im playing a '94 Gibson LP Standard with the original 498 in the bridge. But I ditched the 490 in the neck for a 57 Classic. All I can say is W O W ! ! !

    Thanks for a very thorough demo and review. My only humble request would be when you have it on clean settings to still play hard like you do on the crunch and gain settings. Seems like you backed off on the attitude and attack when clean so couldn't really tell if it still had a little break-up and bark to it. Again, thanks for really taking the time to put it through its paces!

WOW! Super warm and sustain! .....The cab I'm rereferring to is a vintage Fender 4 x 12 8 ohm cab....sounds fantastic! This IS a great combo amp I would recommend any guitarist to snatch! 40 Marshall watts can keep up with just about any bass amp out there.....I have a vintage Hartke stack (two 4 x 10 XL cabs/ Hartke 5000 head), and an Ampeg SVT Monster.....This Marshall DSL40/20 is way cool!

      @@Rau1S I had a Katana 50, mark 1 and I loved it. Got it second hand for 200 CAD. Katanas are great. But the marshal is also great, a lot of versatility, and tons of Marshall gain, and it’s more expensive. I don’t care for all the settings on the settings on the Katana to dial in a specific tone, but the Katana does make a good pedal platform. Hard choice, but for me the Marshal wins. Play both and see which one you like, and what fits your budget

    I own the 40 and the 20 . For stage I use the 20 because it’s a lot lighter and I’ve spent to much of my lumping equip around. The 40 comes with my favorite high gain celestian , the v series . The 20 came with a 70/80 turd speaker . I swapped for some heritage series and it made the amp get up and walk . It now sounds equal to the 40 in tone just isn’t as loud. These are the stage and practice amps of choice for me

    Hey Andy! Found your channel earlier this week and want to say thanks for your videos and knowledge. Great channel! Glad to find someone who breaks the amp down like you do.
    If you have time, I'd like to get your opinion on digital pedals on this amp and trying to get best tone. I have the same DSL40 amp and using Fender Tele and Gibson Les Paul Classic with it. EQ knobs on your amp in this video and mine are actually near the same. Unlike your great sound, my tone is just a bit to high pitched and bit to grumbly in low end. No matter how I try, I can't get that out without losing other areas of range. To me it seems like around 150hz and then that upper 2-5k range. So I added in a Line 6 Pod 500x board using 4 cable method. No preamp of course on the Pod 500. I did have to boost the output of Pod as it dropped signal a few db when put in.
    My chain is Red Compression (30% sustain, 85% output).
    Then into the amp.
    Loop back into Pod into Studio EQ. (Eq gives 2 selectable ranges with option to leave at 0, 12oclock, pull to -11 or boost to +11.) I have Lo fq 150hz pulled way out to -9 and does nearly nothing and Hi fq at 3k pulled out -5 and pretty much same as lows, very little help. Going to change this around in the mean time to graphic eq or parametric and see if it helps.
    Next area is where I could really use your help. I can dump the other stuff if needed and just focus on these effects...
    Analog flanger comes next (digital but made to sound analog) with speed at 0.6 hz, depth 30%, fdbk 40%, manual 60%, mix 80%.
    Then delay (trying my best to get it to sound like yours here) with time at 225ms, fdbk 50% (noon), bass 47%, treble 43%, mix 25%.
    Reverb is next. Spring reverb. Decay 50% (noon), predelay 63ms, tone 60%, mix 46%.
    Final is volume pedal.
    Then it heads back into amp of course to I assume power amps and out speakers.
    I can move, change, delete, etc anything in this chain. It doesn't sound bad it just doesn't sound good. There's just something not quite right. If you see anything wrong and don't mind giving some help, advice and/or info it would be dearly appreciated. In the mean time going to keep browsing your channel and see what all I can did into.
    Thanks again!

      Did you ever solve the issue? I kinda have the same problem, just sounds muddy and not the typical ballsy marshall tone

    • @tt01388
      @tt01388 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @bobbyblue2632 yes and no. I never found anyone to help with it. This was years ago so my memory is a little foggy on it at the moment. I ended up finding the issue was in the main amp though not the preamp. First thing I did was replace all the tubes. I went very expensive on those and got the gold "somethings"... can't recall the name but they're common and easy to find. I can look it up for you if you like. But after that I started bypassing the preamp and hearing the main amp. Once my ear figured out that sound I tweaked the pre and post into I got as good as I could. The rest I put eq, compression and effects in on my line 6. Long short I finally got a very good sound. But it took to much work. These amps could have been excellent but imo Marshall dropped the ball. They're mass produced and quality control sucks. I had to reinforce my box already where it was breaking down and the foot pedal switch failed at the amp. Not the pedal. All in warranty and Marshall wouldn't stand behind it. I haven't touched the amp in about a year now. All I can say is replace tubes and toy with it. I can help out where I can. May take me a few days to get back with you. If you don't get me after a week or so try me again. I stay so busy I'll see messages sometimes and forget.

    I've been watching reviews and setup suggestions for weeks. Finally ran across your channel and your reviews and suggestions are the best I've seen by far!!!! Question-With the #2 crunch chl being a bit louder than the #1 clean, how would you propose using master #2 as the lead boast? Is it an either/or option? I noticed you didn't demo the clean in the other video when master#2 as the lead so it made me wonder. Thanks again!! Great stuff!

    • @alwaysandy_
      @alwaysandy_  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Origins are great. More of a plexi and pedal platform from what I’ve heard. The DSL is great and I’ll likely keep it a long while. For me it’s about the versatility of the channels and not needing a gain pedal on the pedalboard. And the tones are good enough to get it gone for live stuff. But in regular use the DSL sits dusty. Covid came. It’s a live use amp. TH-U from Overloud is soooo good and gives me all the amps all the cabs etc it’s hard to bother with mic’ing up an amp. Cheers!

    Bought it and same day brought it back. Included footswitch is useless due to delay in sound when switching channels. Also at high gain levels at high volumes the thing squeals. Its a good amp at low volumes to practice at home 1 channel at a time thats it. At best its a great clean players amp or blues maybe acdc and thats it. For 1150.00cad you could get so much more like a half decent cab and head with more giging versitility.

    Andy, thanks for the great review. I'm potentially interested in this amp. I've had a Marshall Code 50 for a bit. I bought that more so for experimentation and unfortunately, I've had more issues with it than what it's worth. How's this amp handle power chords, the bottom end, and that nature? I'd hate to invest in more gear just to experience some of the limitations i have with the Code. Thanks man.

    Ah, yes, 1oclock on the gain is nice on this ol’ girl
    Yeah I don’t agree that the master volume gives you any gains in the tone dept. I tried it after I saw someone say it, didn’t sound any different even when I tried to rattle my neighbors bowels.

    Can anyone help me decide if I should buy one of these mainly for home use with occasional gigging thrown in? I've watched tons of video's about it already but can't seem to find a definitive answer the the question of how good the tone is at low volume (bedroom level/whatever you wanna call it). I don't want to use an attenuator and will be running straight into it with maybe just a Boss sd-1 as a little spice too. Thanks in advance to anyone with good advice

      Marshall makes a 6 button of some sort, but I'd just pick any midi pedal or loop switcher that sends midi channel changes etc. Behringer makes a popular and not pricey midi foot pedal. Good luck! Cheers!

    The problem with this amp is: Without this amp some can't play to begin with & without the help of the Marshall you are dead in the water. You are bound to this amp. Not good. They have you brainwashed with ease of dialing distortion and sustain. Help us lord!!! What happens if it dies? Oh no!!! Any amp should suffice, well almost any. Rhythm & Lead heavy or not has to be the combination and not bound to one amp...

    • @LynJimi
      @LynJimi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh and playing with 5 other musicians on stage is not about 1 player with tons of distortion. yuk ....horrible and sometimes can thrown out of a club for noise, what happened to dance music rhythm and kewl funkie stuff. FENDER here i come..bye bye

    • @alwaysandy_

      Agreed, quality concerns are legit. Mine is of the newer lot and the one I have seems so far to be ok - after swapping in new JJ power tubes of course. I’m NOT a Marshall guy, this my first full Marshall amp. Had a power amp I liked for years. All the same in the last five years I’ve had a Traynor fail and a Bogner fail, both very solid amps. So I dove into this one eyes open, and always have a back up for unproven gear. 👍🤘⚡️ Cheers mate!
