  • Jig fishing for bass is truly one of the best ways to catch your personal best and a jig might be the most versatile lure on the planet. So lets talk about 3 jig tips you need to master!
    LURES MENTIONED:
    Bitsy Bug Jig - www.sportsmans...
Zoom Super Junk Jr - www.sportsmans...
If you have been fishing for bass, you have probably heard of a jig or jig and pig. This is an old school lure that still produces big bass every single year.
Not only is it a great lure for catching big bass, but you can also catch bass on it in a number of different situations. From clear deep water to shallow dirty water.
One thing that I have noticed is that there is a lot of folks out there that struggle to gain confidence in a jig, so this video is geared to helping people understand a jig and gain confidence in fishing it.
    I hope it helps you!

WOW...amazing. I also heard, like any technique, to be a better at jig fishing, go out on the water and ONLY THROW jigs the whole time, even if fish aren't caught it helps getting more comfortable fishing them. The color and trailer advice is PERFECTY to know, thanks.

Bro that explains me perfectly. I’ve never caught a fish on a jig. I have no idea what to do with a jig. ZERO confidence on it. Maybe cuz I fish ponds with a lot of grass and vegetation.

The only way to get better with a lure is use it. Example say you fish from March until November which is 9 months. 1. Pick 2 lures you struggle with. 2. Figure out the amount of time you plan to fish say it's for 2 hours use a swim jig 1 hour, then a football head jig for 1 hour. 3. Use the swim jig 1 hour use the timer on your phone. Bring just 2 rods tie the swim jig an football head. 4. You can drag a football head on the bottom. Let it sit 3 to 5 second gently tap handle a few times. 6. Alternate how long to pause you may luck out with 5 seconds or maybe 3. 7 you figure out how to retrieve an work a lure go by temperature an current watch for birds boils an bait. 8 if there's no birds or boils Eddie's a gentle swirl in the midpoint current. If it's hot use a slower or moderate retrieve with longer pauses start with 7 seconds to 8 seconds. 9. Yoyo the football head a 3 parts yoyo. Start at 9 o'clock position slightly raise rod tip pause 1 to 2 seconds then a slight raise again after 1 to 2 second pause as you yoyo lure then end yoyo retrieve at no higher than 10 o'clock. You can do the same with a swim jig. Try yo-yo technique after a few seconds moderate retrieve depending on how far you cast it out if u cast a short distance moderate retrieve for 6 seconds with a subtle jerk to the rod giving a darting action. Pause let it sink to the bottom stay in 1 spot pause then tap the handle of the rod. Stay in that spot say if 5 second pause got no feed back try 3 seconds. Then try the 3 parts yoyo technique at 9 o'clock let fall 1 second raise rod tip again let sink 1 second then finally raise rod tip up to 10 o'clock position. Try this at least 3 to 5 times if no luck try retrieve fast or slow 6 seconds. Pause let it fall 2 to 3 seconds then continue retrieve back to you. Mix up retrieve an pauses

I love fishing jigs. My recommendation is a booyah finance ball head style jig. I don’t like pointy style heads or football style because I feel like they dig in grass too much. My favorite trailer is a yum Christie craw. 3 reasons: cheap, durable, and color choice. Thanks 👍

Completely agree with this video. I couldn't get bit on Flippin jigs when I first started. What helped me gain confidence was using a 1/4oz swim jig. Casting it up shallow, hopping it a couple times then swimming it back. Was all downhill after that.

Old guy at my church said the same about fishing one lure all the time. Get acquainted with it, learn it and master it. It's your tool. Same goes for any lure he said. Stick with it for a whole season. Don't give yourself any other option and watch what happens. The itsy is fantastic.. Too often the big jig on the shelves catches me more than the bass.

I am new to jig fishing but definitely like it I often get frustrated when I fish it for a long time and don’t get bit. Also another issue is the hook set with a jig I have got a lot of bites but they come off especially the smaller bass I have caught a few 3 and 4 lb bass because I guess they are bigger and swallow it on the fist bite. What would be your advice to me? Thanks again and this is definitely one of my favorite videos of yours. I really appreciate the information you provide.

Color can be a big issue. Just yesterday I was fishing with a green pumpkin for a hour or so, I cut it off and tied on a black&blue and got bit on the second cast and caught 10 bass in about 45 minutes. Hop it, drag it, swim it you just gotta go down the list till you find what they’ll bite. Good luck 👍🏻

Great video. Quick, detailed, & couldn't agree more with the points. Also think the Itsy Bitsy or Bitsy Mini or whatever they are calling the smaller size now should probably be every anglers first jig. It's a versatile head shape, readily available in most stores, low cost, and gets bit.
I was blessed to be taught to fish a jig by some of the literal best and the first thing they taught me was give yourself no option... Go out with a rod and a pocket full of jigs and just commit & never stop making adjustments till it clicks. When it clicks... Repeat. All the time you spent making the adjustments then becomes your testing data and knowledge from which to draw the improvements and tweaks you will need to take what works for you and apply it to all the other jig shapes, formats, & situations.

Don't agree, this is totally not true. I've caught more fish on a plastic worm than I ever have on a jig! A worm is just as good if not better because it's so simple. This is why I hate so many of these bass videos about tackle, too many lies, misconceptions and bs. Fishing is simple, you don't need all of that complicated garbage!! Look at a jig, really take a hard look at it. What do you know of, in fresh water, that looks like a jig. Nothing!! Why should I bother using a jig when other things work every time I them in the water.

Try letting your jig lay still once you cast it and slowly drag your jig. I use this method in the winter and catch base. It will also work year round when the bite is tough. It's called slow roll.

I have been fishing for nearly half a century, I have yet to catch a bass on a jig. I tried and tried, at $5 a pop losing 5 a trip I gave up....for awhile. This year I figured I quit basically because of the cost and started looking around. I make my own soft plastics and I make $1k worth of plastics with about $100 and put those thoughts into jigs. Last week I went looking for supplies to make my own, I spent $140 and got the supplies to make 140 jigs. Seriously! If the cost is just annoying MAKE YOUR OWN! So much cheaper and this year I can lose as many as I want :D I just need to wait until the 30 inch thick ice melts.

Bitsy bugs should be in EVERY smallmouth bass fisherman's arsenal. Try fishing one with a TUBE as the trailer in the river for smallmouth! THIS ABSOLUTELY MURDERS.
I like to use a black and blue, or green pumpkin jig paired with a smoke/purple fleck bitsy tube, bps tender tube, or dry creek outfitters 3 ½" creek tube. My theory is it looks like a molting crayfish, which smallies absolutely CANNOT resist.

If you can fish a plastic worm then you can fish a jig. No diff, and just like fishing a plastic worm you have to watch your line and if you see it move, even without feeling anything, set the hook INSTANTLY!!!! ...And learn how to know the diff between the 'tell-tale' feel of a Bass vs.a twig, rock, ect. plus you won't be getting hung-up hardly ever by setting the hook into a log a gnarly brush pile or rock piles / rip-rap ect.
    Good luck!

I agree but would like to add one thing. When fishing faster moving lures such as a crank bait, have a jig ready & if you catch or miss a fish, stop, grab that jig & fish that area out. In tournaments, that’s usually where my bigger fish come from. You are 100% right, you have to have confidence which comes from using it. In my younger days, I spent $$ on colors before I considered style, size & action where color should be the last thing.
Oh, one other thing to add: If your are has a lot of wood & down trees, football heads are not ideal. The head get wedged in the Y’s or forks in branches etc…

You’ll need to explain where and what time of the season for jig fishing to better in hence your video presentation.

The best way to catch bass it seems.. is to have a boat and the wild expensive gear behind this dude in the video lol. As a shore angler… it’s hard out here

A jig is the only lure you need all year long. Period. I've even got my 11 y.o son catching on them

About 4 weeks ago I started leaning into learning jigs, swimming and pitching. It’s been a ton of fun!

I like what you're doing here and have watched hours and hours of your videos. And then I saw you using Live scope. What a shame :/

Almost everyone uses them tho I don’t but I use a small jon boat with just a trolling motor but once I pay my truck off I believe I’m going to buy a new bass boat and I will have it on it I know it takes some of the skill out of it but it will save a lot of wasted time but it dosent guarantee the fish will bite

I can confirm.. you won't learn a bait unless you fish it ALOT! And once you get it down, you'll pick it up often because it works.
Keeping it in your hand... great info for any bait you really want to master!

Set the hook a little harder guiy, you didn't quite rip the fish's lip off.

Just started fishing a few weeks ago, and this video has been super helpful. I picked one up, when I assembled my tackle box, but this has given me a reason to be excited to cast it out. Gave this channel a sub too. Looking forward to more. Thanks boss

I just started fishing a few weeks ago too. I've gone here and there in the past, but I didn't know half of what the heck is going on at the end of my line.
I'm trying to learn some different setups on my line.
Bobber, split shot, hook with worm is getting me small blue gill near the shore if I spot them ahead of time.
I have a small mino with a split shot. I get bites, but it gets caught up in weeds a lot.
I just got a few frogs to try out and some plastic worms that have 2 weedless hooks already on them.
Today I ordered a pack of jigs with some trails.
Hopefully some of those things start getting me more bites and I can start getting a better sense of what makes fish attack and how to hook them.
      Good luck out there.

I have more confidence fishing a jig than anything else. My go to is Talon BillyMac Jig or Talon Yuugyo Swim Jigs. When I first started bass fishing I had the fever and went crazy with color selection lol. As time went on I realized that I was only using those 3 colors. Especially a white or white/chartreuse swim jig. Something about that color just gets bit here in Southeast Texas. These videos that you have put out are top notch and very informative. Could definitely save the next guy or gal with the fever some money if they take in this information.
