    I'm so old I remember walking past Jacqueline when she was in her wheelchair, in Marylebone, where i believe she lived. What an honour to inhabit the planet at the same time as her.

      +Greg Mason You think you're old! When I was sixteen and living with my parents in Manchester, UK, our Dad got tickets for me and himself for the 1965 Halle Orchestra performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto - Conductor Sir John Barbirolli, cello soloist Jacqueline Du Pre. Pretty amazing! We had no reason at the time to think it was a particularly important performance. But I'll never forget it, or Ms Du Pre. It introduced me to a lifelong love of classical music.

    Elgar would be proud, dazzling performance by Jacqueline du pre, unequaled yet by any one since, even legendary YoYo ma playing the same cello she performed on. Sorry Yo yo, l love your performance too.

    What a gorgeous tone, what stunning (yet perfectly utilitarian) virtuosity...
    It's no wonder that Ms. du Pre pretty much owned this piece after this recording.
    From Wikipedia:
    "On hearing her recording, Mstislav Rostropovich is said to have removed the work from his own repertoire.
    In an interview, on being asked why the Elgar concerto was not in his standard repertoire, Rostropovich said 'My pupil, Jacqueline du Pré, played it much better than I.' "
    So there.
    The onset of her debilitating illness ultimately took her off the concert stage, and then took her life, but her recordings, especially this one, are monuments to her prodigious talent and her expressive humanity.
    Interesting bits of trivia about the concerto, also courtesy of Wikipedia:
    "The concerto had a disastrous premiere, at the opening concert of the London Symphony Orchestra's 1919-20 season on 27 October 1919.
    Apart from the concerto, which the composer conducted, the rest of the programme was conducted by Albert Coates, who overran his rehearsal time at the expense of Elgar's.
    Lady Elgar wrote, 'that brutal selfish ill-mannered bounder ... that brute Coates went on rehearsing.'
    The critic of The Observer, Ernest Newman, wrote, 'There have been rumours about during the week of inadequate
    rehearsal. Whatever the explanation, the sad fact remains that never, in all probability, has so great an orchestra made so lamentable an exhibition of itself.' "
    (and)
    "Barbirolli (the conductor here) himself had an association with the concerto from its first days: he was a member of the cello section of the orchestra at its 1919 premiere..."
    The "disastrous" premiere.
    Well, all accounts were certainly settled, and all debts paid, with this recording.
    Afterthought:
    This marvelous, contemplative, elegaic piece was written by the same composer who provided (unbeknownst to him) the soundtrack for innumerable commencements and graduation ceremonies, "Pomp and Circumstance."

    The Elgar Concerto seems like an encapsulation of her tragically short life and career. The Elgar WAS Jacqueline du Pré, and in her hands it seemed as if the piece had been written for her and her alone. I cannot hear any other version of this great work without comparing it to Jackie's.

    • @speedrhino
      @speedrhino 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +James Vaughan Well the concerto itself was actually written as a memory of World War 1 and the horrors it brought to the world. He wrote it as a sad reminder of what war could bring.

    • @JamesVaughan

      Michael Nolan It is also an elegy for his wife, who had recently died.

      +James Vaughan Lady Elgar died a year after the cello concerto was composed so this is not possible. I suppose it's possible that he dedicated it to her memory after her death but I don't know any more about this.

    • @JamesVaughan
      @JamesVaughan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Edward Gold You are right. I stand corrected. Just consulted Michael Kennedy's 'The Life of Elgar', and the Cello Concerto was composed in 1919 (with its premiere the same year), and Lady Caroline Alice Elgar died in 1920. Quoting the Kennedy biography: the cello was '…just the instrument to convey the loneliness, disillusion and sense of belonging to a dying era that underlies much of the music of the concerto….' I must have read somewhere that the Cello Concerto later became for Elgar a kind of elegy for his departed wife, and that must have been the source of my somewhat inaccurate statement.

Nevertheless, I'll take huge pleasure from his performance and I'm looking forward to it immensely!

    my great grandfather James whitehead from lancashire was known for playing this, do you know of him?

      Hi Tiger Spills The Wine. My Whitehead and Jackson ancestors were all from Lancs and at least one of my cousins from there loves classical music, as I do. So James might be an ancestor. I've done a lot of ancestry research and I seem to recall that my great granddad may have had a relative named James but I know nothing about him.

      haha so interesting. James Whitehead was a famous cello player who played in the london symphonny orchestra and he was also a soloist, eventually setteling down with the Adelaide symphony orchestra is adelaide, where I'm from.
      I'm Jimi Whitehead by the way

      @@peterwhitehead2858 I was born and bred in Adelaide and James Whitehead was my cello teacher for a year or so in my early teens. He was much liked. I was an indifferent student and never did enough practice, but James was always tolerant and good-humoured. Now in my dotage I wish he'd been a tyrant and forced me to take the instrument seriously ...
