- Elgar: Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 85 at the Closing Concert of the Queen Elisabeth Cello Competition 2017 in BOZAR, Brussels.
Santiago Cañón - Valencia: Cello
Muhai Tang: Conductor
Antwerp Symphony Orchestra
I decided to listen to this performance again today as I was wishing I could have heard Santiago playing this live several times in Germany last week and this week in Wales. What an incredible artist! He has it all and for me there is no greater cellist anywhere in the world right now.
Sir Edward Elgar would say: how fine!! A Colombian cellist playing my cello concerto with such a perfection!!! Congratulations to my "paisano" Cañón Valencia... Very proud of him!!!
His technique in both bow and fingering arm is perfect, it's so aesthetically pleasing to watch him play! Ridiculously talented.
Sergio Martinez I tottally agree
@@briancello_ :/ well he is talented
@@briancello_ there's a difference between talent and skill. this guy has both
I agree I think he is one of the best technically speaking
He started his studies at the age of 4. He's a prodigy.
Once in a generation talent right here. Among the greats with so much time to only get better!

Fantastic performance, Santiago. Supremely elegant, clean and restrained but not lacking feeling. So much better than the big box of sobs on a pin interpretations (not going to mention names) that are far too prevalent these days, I hear music, not self-indulgence and ego Bravo.
That was among the best Elgar Cello Concerto performances I have heard!
Beautiful interpretation, Congratulations!. Orgullo Colombiano!
like everything you do with the cello AMAZING
Along with Du Pre's version this of cellist Cañón is really extraordinare. Congratulations!!
21:53 I love these last notes...perfect tempo and perfect character... this episode, in my opinion, set a high standard in the performance of this piece...
So wonderful to have this great performance of a great concerto! And so wonderful to have so many great young cellists!
Que alegría que tremendo talento sea colombiano. Mi mayor admiración a este chelista tan increíble. Bravo!
Verdadero placer escuchar este concierto . Solista , director y orquesta se complementan .
If you saw this guy play Bach live, it is the most beautiful thing. It puts the beauty of Kristy Turlington to shame...
Wonderful. As other people have said, not a mushy self-indulgent rendering of this very special piece, but a strong and sensitive interpretation. Bravo!
(Was it just me, or could his chair be heard creaking during the quieter moments? Especially during the 1st movement... 🤔😳)
Beautiful performance. What a future this young man has with all this talent. This piece is new to me and I'm in awe of it, especially knowing a bit of the story of its creation at the end of World War I... certainly a painful moment with so much death and destruction... as though humans had gone insane. In other words, not that different from right now!
So beautiful

Que orgullo ver a éste hombre
I haven't had goosebumps since I heard Du Pre. Santiago is a great talent! 👏👏👏
Bellísima interpretación. De acuerdo con algunos, revive la pasión de Du pre. Felicitaciones Santiago
this is marvelous, applause, genius!
Получил огромное удовольствие от просмотра! Благодарю!
very facile in the last movement, slippery passagework, well done!
Volvió a la vida la "legendaria" Jacqueline du pre
Excelente interpretación :')
Exactly!!!!
Beautiful music as always
Qué bonito concierto! Excelente solista!!!
Браво,исполнено просто блестяще!
Vaya maquina
wonderful performance ; so nice balanced & dynamic ! Congrats !
El solista tiene excelente técnica , sonido limpio y muy expresivo
Қарақалпаққа кел Сантиаго😊
The Hilary Hann of cello
The Santiago Cañón Valencia of cello*
Same
He has quite a different style and technique, I wouldn't really compare him to any other string instrument player. He is literally setting up his own standard of technical mastery.
Very good comment and I will add that Hilary is the Santiago of Violin...the other way around. very interesting way of aproach the instrument...no comments at all only good things...amazingly talented and committed musician responsible and dedicated to search always for improvement
More like the Santiago Canon Valencia of Cello because you cannot compare.
Bravooo 👋👋👋
Magnifique ! Merci pour le partage Santiago.
Wonderful!
Congratulations! Ursula
Delightful**********
Te acabo de descubrir y me encantas.
a little wd40 on that chair might help - or as my father says "just put some olive oil" - or maybe the stage technician could check the chair beforehand? my goodness - blocking that creaking out whilst playing = difficult!!!!!! Anyway Santiago nails it as usual
Hey! What an amazing performance! What exercises did you work to have this incredible left hand?
Matteo decades of practice should do it ;)
Answer.... "Uhh.... all of them..."
@@maxlunifeld4403 Santiago is a gifted talented musician and he is not even in his 30´s and also has an amazing instrument...that helps a lot
@@mattg6262Just pay attention to his left hand how is bended backwards
