Wonderful! I loved the freedom of your physical movement during the "fun" themes. Your passion, tenderness and firm left hand, excellent fingerings and bow control with the mature understanding of Elgar's ideas. A treat. Thanks for posting. The camerawork of the video, excellent audio and directing of the cameras was first rate.. I'm also a cellist and now a retired television producer/director of 43 years.

Little bit of fun fact on Elgar to give you a new perspective on this piece: he was a very tormented soul. He was always out of place, he was a Catholic in a Protestant dominant England of the late 1800s from a poor family married to someone very rich. This piece was his last piece and his last statement on this world and the melody is what he wanted to be remembered by. Amazing interpretation by Johannes Moser. truly a master!

I think one reason for that was to get the C string to start vibrating as quickly as possible?
In Bach's cello suite no. 3 Prelude in the opening phrase the first open string C2 needs such a pluck, and the reason being the need to get the C string to start ringing quickly.
I don't know if that applies here

Elgar had struggled to rise from his lower middle class background (and a Catholic in Protestant England)to become the voice of empire. His music embodies the majesty and nobility of that great image, to be heard time and again in his great “nobilamente” themes. But the carnage of World War I showed that nobility to have feet of clay. So the cello concerto, his last major work though he lived another 14 years, is a farewell elegy to a world that not only had gone, but that perhaps had had a hollow heart. All that sorrow, with great reserve, us expressed in this masterpiece.

The modern companion to this Elgar classic is the haunting concerto for the same instrument from another
British composer, the late George Lloyd. I was privileged to be part of the first public UK concert performance
of this fine work here in London. A CD recording from the US company Albany Records by the eponymous US
symphony orhestra and their gifted soloist is available. Well worth exploring by any lover of the cello..
