  • Anyone between the ages of 25 and 45 has some sort of deep and intimate life experiences around the 3rd Gen 4runner, and here we have the keynote example. SR5 Package? Check! 4x4? Check Well over 250k miles? Check yeah! I'm a huge fan of Toyotas and part and parcel to Toyota ownership is casually absorbing huge mileage without issue. I'm a huge fan of this truck and PUMPED to see what it will do over @carsandbids here: carsandbids.com/auctions/3oyz...

    I have the same truck. 2002 doesn't have a diff lock that's the transfer case lock button on the dash. It has the multi mode transfer case which gives you 4hi unlocked which is similar to all wheel drive and can be used on any surface at any speed. 4 hi locked, and 4 low locked are for offroad only.

    I got a 2002 limited. Been in the family since brand new and has 230k on the clock. All weve done are regular oil changes, spark plugs and a timing belt change. Runs like day one. I’m thankful to have it as a first car, but I wish it had 4wd.

    I have a 98 Limited. It was a one owner as well. Not as nice on the exterior as this one, the interior is immaculate. I changed the timing belt and fuel pump, new tires, new rotors and brakes. New u joints on drive shaft.Engine is clean. I plan to get it painted. I’m confident I’ll get an additional 20 years out of it.

      I have a 2002 with approximately 189,000 miles. Just curious what maintenance you have done to keep it on the road that long. I'd love to get mine to that many miles someday.

      I'm guessing he never responded because his 3rd gen didn't require anything more than regular maintenance to achieve 473k miles.

      Just did regular maintenance and preventive maintenance, plus I take really good care of it!

    The body style is just perfect they would bring it back and smaller. The early sr5 look good. Now all truck have that boxy square husky look only the grill are diffrent and they are selling this rubbish for 60-70 thousand. You can but a fixer up house and rent it out for that price.

    9:14 Not likely to have a Rear Diff Lock. (the button would say RR DIFF LOCK) I believe 2000 was the last year to offer that. That's probably a Center Differential Lock (not as desirable, imo), which you only want to engage on dirt or snow or mud, not hard dry surfaces. However, you can push the 4WD button at any time to engage 4Hi mode. Need to stop and be in neutral to push the lever forward into 4Lo tho.

    Saw one about this year in town today. That thing will be going long after the lady that was driving it will be interested. I would probably be on the 4th transmission by then. I've seen that engine with over 600,000 miles.

    Back in the day Toyota made so many silvers ones, almost none of the other colors

    It's a shame how expensive these trucks have gotten. I kinda want one, but man the prices!

    7:19 Something's wrong, or odd, with those timing belt numbers. Why would you do a timing belt at 160K if it had been done at 145K? The job at 145K must have f'd up or something?

    • @dand33911
      @dand33911 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's a 2002...
      Guessing. The first timing belt at 145k was done under 10 years of age. Was driven alot when it was new. Then the truck sat.
      Those belts are like tires. They crack and dry rot over time. It's probably a 10 year OR 100,000 mile replacement item.
      Or the water pump went, did the timing belt at the same time.

      Just FYI if you're looking into these 3rd gens.
      #1 highly recommended. I daily a mint 98 sr5 V6 4x4 5 speed with 257k miles. Tighter than my 2018 Jeep Wrangler going down the road.
      #2. Timing belts on the 3.4 V6 engines are what's known as "non interference." Meaning if one let's go and snaps, it is not by default a catastrophic engine failure.
      It is also not an overly complex replacement job, and an entire OEM kit with pulleys and water pump is currently $400 on ebay.

      @@dand33911 Your 98 sounds nice, probably has the locking rear differential, like my 99 Tacoma. I picked up an '01 4Runner a year go, about 265K now. However, they did not offer the locking REAR diff for '01 & '02. It has a center locking differential, but that's not as good (in my opinion) if you end up in that situation where a front and rear wheel are both spinning, and you're stuck, until you can rock back and forth and bounce out. Its timing belt was done about 50k ago, so I may not ever have to deal with it, unless it breaks, doh!

    • @dand33911

      @terebrate
      There's a couple of shorts of it on my channel. Came from Washington state, 0 rust anywhere. I love it.
      The only thing it doesn't have is the locking rear diff. I'd like to get one, but I believe they are a different gear ratio and a much bigger job than a simple center section swap.
      Your 01 has the good cupholders, the 98 sucks. That is a swap worth doing!

    Something about the seat foam supplier for Tundras and 4Runner/GX/Land Cruisers.l, even Tacoma. Tundra is the only truck that has miserable Seat foam. Even a 2021 at 22000 miles, the cloth driver seat already shows sagging. Owners of Tundras cannot all be fat Americans!
