  • So many of us aspire to own a home close to the water, and it doesn’t get any closer than this! Inspired by the incredible float homes of British Columbia, this house boat in Auckland, New Zealand is sure to impress.
Perfectly fitting into a 12 meter marina berth, this floating home (affectionally named Blue Turtle) is wonderfully designed to be open, spacious and fully featured despite its compact size. The home has two bedrooms, a spacious bathroom and enjoys a wonderful open plan kitchen, dining and living space upstairs, all with wrap around decks for amazing indoor / outdoor living.
Located so close to Auckland City, this house boat has panoramic views across the marina and over towards the city beyond. For Olivia and Ryan, it’s a home which enables them to live a dream lifestyle, close to town and yet in a place where they can feel as though they are on permanent holiday.
Enjoy the tour of this wonderful home on the water.

Lol! Yeah, yeah, I get it!! However, I live on a boat with my husband and we made sure that we chose a small marina and one where we can dock on the end where we aren’t SURROUNDED by a bunch of other boats cuz that’s even worse than living in a damn city to me!!! I don’t want to be sitting on my toilet and look out the porthole only to see somebody else staring back at me while they’re brushing their teeth in their head (bathroom!)!!!! SERIOUSLY!!! LOOK AT HOW CLOSE THOSE BOATS ARE!!! There’s absolutely NO privacy!!! Instead, where we are, on the end of our dock, there are 2 empty spaces between us and our closest neighbor and all open water on the other side. It’s PERFECT! I couldn’t do it like these people are all squished together like that!!! To me, it seems to defeat the entire purpose of living on a boat!

@@usriyeni2022 - Comparison: The $500,000 AUS converts to $358,000 US. The monthly berth costs of about $1,050 AUS would be $752 US. The purchase cost of my condo in Seattle was $412,000 (952sf) and the current association dues are $796 per month. My understanding is that a condo/apartment in Auckland that was similar in size and views to the houseboat would be at least $1,000,000 AUS plus weekly/monthly costs.

This feels like a normal house even though it's on the water. It's adorable. I love that you don't have to climb to get into any of the bedrooms. I could totally do this if I ever decide to give up house living, lol. I also think the storage hatches are very clever. I think the tiny homes on land should utilize this feature. You could make a false bottom on the floor level to create them.

And to think that when I was a child, living in houseboats on the rivers near my home in the Pacific Northwest was the option for the poorer members of the community. As a kid, I always thought I'd rather live on the water rather than living in a big home on top of a hill. I guess me and my less wealthy neighbors were trend setters, 60 years early.

Affordable means different things to different people. Even regular homes that are considered affordable for some are not for others. What others consider tiny, someone else might not. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but these are things that are not a “one size fits all.” My place is 1500 square feet, which might be considered small for some, but it’s a perfect space for my bf and I. A 3,000 square foot house feels huge to me, and I grew up in a house that was roughly 8,000 square feet. “Tiny” to me is anything less than 700 square feet. “Tiny” to you might be anything less than 400 square feet, and so on.

Had to go back and look! There it is! Lol. I have always thought I'd love to live on a houseboat. This one doesnt have the cozy ambience I enjoy, but it's good that there is something for everyone. I like smaller and closer spaces, but this is great for those who feel the need for more room and something more like a normal space. That's got to be the priciest "tiny" home I think I've ever seen... but then it isn't really "tiny." Glad you are including options for everyone- from on-land submarines to tree houses to boathouses!

Wow! She's absolutely beautiful. But Gracious! There's a Massive amount of Real estate on her cabin top to install an amazing solar systm. They would be able to harness all the power they'd ever need and save on their ele costs. Best part is there's no mast therefore, no shading. Same with a rain catchment system area.
Imho, they really only lack/could do with a grill on the deck just off the galley. Perfection!
I'm presuming because she's only been in it a short time, she's not addressed these other things. That and the fact that she's already put a crap-tonne of $$$$$$ into her home thus far. This was delightful! Thanks Bryce!
    Btw:
Any chance you can hook back up with them in the future? It'd be nice to see what changes/refits are done.
