    This man is well educated about the breed. it's amazing that he mentioned the necessity for proper training and joining a reputable dog club. One night my shep was laying at the end of the couch and when I moved my foot he growled at me. That was the only time that I ever had to yell and discipline him and he never did it again. I used to let him get away with getting on the couch with me so what this man is saying is absolutely true. It's very important to train them as a puppy. grooming is extremely important because without proper grooming they will shed all the time. You have to brush them everyday and take care of the undercoat. A proper diet with nutritious food and the right kind of food is absolutely essential. That's for any breed.
    They are the sweetest most loyal dog that I've ever had. Socializing with other people and other dogs is very important. I would go to Australia to buy a German Shepherd from this man

    Great video that describes the german Shepherd as he is without hiding the points of interest. We only have german shepherds with a straight back and therefore not with such a deliberately malformed raised slanted back. They are great guard dogs. But also cuddly dogs for us and also for our grandchildren.

    I love this man's attitude towards GSDs. And I learned from this video of some mistakes I made early with my two wonderful dogs. Thanks to this video, I won't make them again. For the record, my female had rear leg surgery for inflamed ligaments on both sides at three years of age. Big $$$, not that $$$ was ever a consideration. I think she's okay now, but I think my mistake was exercising her too much and too early. Thanks for posting this video!

    I rescued an oldet female and have no regrets whatever. Marvelous watch dog, good with cats, appears more fetocious than she is. Walked 3x per day. Andvplay, oh yes play. I am disabled in a chair and had reservations about her high emergy, but geyting an older dog proved a big plus, i love my Cheyenne.

      Mark Henry I am seriously considering getting a rescue dog rather than getting a puppy (for many reasons). What type of dog did you get and roughly how old was she? How easy was it for her to bond with a new owner?

    • @Skippy19812
      @Skippy19812 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Paul A Rescue dogs are awesome. If you're an experienced dog owner then I'd say go for it as it can be incredibly rewarding.
      Bonding can take time depending on the breed, individual dog and life experience. My German Shepherd had problems bonding because she came from an abusive home. I had to visit her several times at the rescue centre and spend lots of time with her before I could bring her home with me. We've now been together 13 years and I think it's safe to say she is a one man dog.
      You may get lucky and the dog takes to you straight away, or you may have to spend time with it before you can officially adopt. It just depends on the dog.

    ALL breeds are like this. They will take advantage of softness or being spoiled and it causes problems later on. Dogs need a leader, someone to treat them well with love but have rules to live by too.

    Some great advice here. I've been around German Shepherds for 30 years and they make fantastic family dogs. I wouldn't advise them as a first dog though, since they can be a handful if you don't know what you're doing.
    If you've got the experience forget puppies and get one from a rescue centre. I got my current Shepherd from a rescue centre and it's the best thing I've ever done.

    I have a dog that has many breeds, i don't know the word for it in english. But i know for a fact from her previous owner she has 33-50% GSD in her. The rest is guesswork, but her guesses were lapland dog, springerspaniel and golden retriever.
    She's a wonderful dog. A bit noisy and a bit of a coward, but she has a big heart and a trusty, joyful and loving look in her eyes.
    She's a rescue dog, and i wouldn't change her for anything, even when she has a few issues. She's afraid of other dogs, i don't know what happened to her in her previous home, but i try to socialize her with other dogs from behind a fence. I walk her 3-4 times a day and i've gotten a lot healthier myself because of all the walks/runs 😊
    I've taught her to pull me on a skateboard so she definitely gets some hardcore running in aswell 😂

    My little girl dog was a thrill of life for me. She weighed about 110 pounds when she was 9 years old. But, she was my baby. Very intelligent, hope in any afterlife I get the brains of a dog. Her only down fall was arthritis, and she struggle thru life, until her end at 9 1/2 years old. I cried and cried when she was put down. But, I had to be merciful for her. She gave me a great life from her, and I had to be strong enough to NOT let her suffer. I gave her meds the vet said she needed for her arthritis, but, eventually the disease got to her spine, and she cried from the pain. That just killed me, and I , well. , you know.

      I personaly think this is the best breed but I am biased I grew up with one from when I was about six until was seventeen and she was the best dog. We rescued her. When I was really little I use to dress her up in clothes and put bows and clips in her fur and she loved the attention. I remember when i was younger i fell off my bike and I screamed. Our German Shepherd was in the back of our yard ( We had about four acres) and my dad said that Honey ( That was her name) was in an all out sprint to get to me. My neighbor ran to help me but he stopped when he saw our dog run to me. He backed off and she just stood there looking at him. She did not attack or bite him at all. She never attacked or bit anyone. He is right these dogs need training but any dog needs training. Our dog got along with other dogs and cats. I miss her.

    Q: Through breeding have the hind legs in recent german shepherds bent over time? Is this one of the characteristics that differ between certain lineages of the breed around the world?

      I'm no expert...and that's a really detailed question. I'd suggest you check out the "breed standards" on the UK and American Kennel Club Websites. They have summaries of what all breeds are supposed to look like etc

    my shepherd came from his mother being a showing while the father was from a working line, a big breeder in Iowa took great care of him. He is still young (14 weeks) he'll have to climb up the stairs once in awhile (4 to 6 times a day) what would u recommend to help his hips grow strong, but still able to go up and down the stairs.

    ok, so i just love too many different kinds of breeds. I love G. Sheps, huskies, airedales, bearded collie, border collies....oh. This is going to be a tough decision. I have owned huskies and Gerbian Shepskies for 18 years. Its hard to switch breeds when you become so in love, but i see how wonderful the others are.....i need to live on a farm where i can have many

    PLEASE READ..points missed...because people in this video are not addressing the very prominent risk of your shephard ending up in rescue...and a list of mistakes i made...think carefully before getting one in an all female household..their guarding tendencies can go into overdrive with softer energies. i dismissed this but now see its true. careful of over correction-they are actually sensitive. very owner orientated shadow dog..make sure you work really hard on building up time alone..or separation anxiety can be horrendous. fear is the german shephards worst enemy..massive amount of socialization needed..i thought id done everything..then first time it saw a colourful large kid cart for a bike he pelted up to it growling and didnt listen. can be overly anxious so always remain calm in front of them, if you cry you might find they start shaking..they need strong consistent behaviour from you..never sometimes correct sometimes ignore or be inconsistent-they need the security of knowing where they stand and how you will behave. dont dont dont backyard breed those below..very bad and even worse for a german shephard who can have health issues..there are far too many in rescue already. also if you have existing dogs or will be getting more in the future..bear in mind this breed will seek to guard your other dogs too..mine was super friendly until i got another 2 rescues who needed confidence..my shep then actively guarded them when out and about against any dogs or people as they were nervous and he automatically stepped in which makes off lead walks very very tricky.your other dogs learn this too then hide while he clears the path! just bear this in mind. last point..and i absolutely stand by this 100%...sheps NEED role models..best is to have a role model for your german shephard at home..a nice steady dog lacking any fear will act as a calming influence. i wish id have gotten a retriever or so first - having a protective but nervy barrel of fluff turned into a giant one who is a different dog when around a very chilled steady dog..and you will see my point. this was WITH going to every class going and bringing him up right..i still have a dog not many would take on. x but i adore him! oh and forget crowded environments..sheps can be so guardy they cant even poop without turning around at every noise of a leaf blowing 200 metres away..and if the doorbell goes..well tolerant neighbours are a must-they are hugely loud dogs. however guarding he acts though he is actually soft as butter..but other people do not know that and you will see people cross the street..jump backwards and allsorts.. and let NO ONE allow him to jump up..once he is huge it is a huge issue for the owner when on walks.

      What you have described is not what a true well trained and socialized GSD is like. I have owned this breed for 33 years. I also compete and title in SchH. And also certify them in SAR and Therapy. I also foster. I have never ever went through what you have. My daughter and Son in Law are on the Canine Unit and they have GSDs, neither are like yours, and they also have a Dane and Mastiff. GSDs are one of the easiest breeds to train.

    • @enjoy5566
      @enjoy5566 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mona B ur full of shit. "easiest???" that's bullshit. They're hard. Ur a great trainer...we get it. But for the avg joe, they're a lot of work. They can be well trained, but they're a lot of work and the work will be paid off. Saying shit is easy just shows how out of touch u are and how disrespectful u r to the dogs.

    • @monab1392
      @monab1392 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm full of shit? Haha that is so freaking funny. I see you have absolutely no clue about the breed. I am far from disrespectful of the dogs. You have no clue

    • @enjoy5566
      @enjoy5566 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mona B My "clue" is that I love dogs so much I know my limitations. I train them from puppy, but I also bring them to dog trainers. I train them for 4 , 5, 6 years. I don't think GSD are "easy". By saying that, I know u are a troll and never had any GSD...maybe some bullshit breed like pit bulls. GSDs smell, need grooming, need training like fuck. But I love them till death because they are like kids, always requiring to be trained and given new stimulus. Go disrespect pits. Leave the $2000 GSDs to real dog lovers!

    1:54 I love the point he just made about how people choose the puppy that comes running up to you. Its so dumb. The dog does not choose the person, the person always chooses the dog. You have to check there personalities.

I miss her. Rest in Peace Honeybear: 1999(ish)-2011.

    I like them because they are great company. They like to play. And they must have their shots. And they have to have their hair brushed. Their coat has to be shiny. Short hairs are great. Training is a must.

      Do you think it is okay to leave a German shepherd dog for 8 hrs at home? Just asking because I am getting a GSD soon and my parents work for 8 hrs and I go to High school for 8 hrs too so we don't really have any other options I guess so I was hoping you can help me or answer my question or tell me what I should do in this situation and just in case you're wondering I am 16.
