To all my new PS5 fellow pirates, welcome to the Sea of Thieves. Just know that you will sink often at first, but that's part of the fun! Learn from your mistakes, and eventually, you'll be sinking ships more than Davey Jones himself. Don't worry about the "grind." The game has plenty of content now to keep pretty much every type of player occupied. Just pick your favorite activities, whether that be PVP, PVE, or something else, and have fun. The gold and rep will come naturally. Being a Pirate Legend is nice and all but it's not what it used to be. Now it's more of a rite of passage than this accolade to be aspired to. So just have fun, tuck on a enemy ship, raid some skeleton forts, the game has a lot to offer.
The PvP is by far the best part of the game, being able to battle in hourglass or clear a server under a reaper emissary is the most fun you can have, especially after already achieving PL & maxing out the companies🤝
Shame a lot of reviewers arent touching on the PVP or naval combat, the latter being one of, if not the games biggest mechanical strengths IMO. As someone who has played SoT since its launch in 2018, I can say while combat and many other systems do have a low learning curve and appear basic at first glance, once that switches from PVE to PVP, the learning curve and skill ceiling of this game sky rockets, theres so much to learn and tactics to master - that goes for land and naval combat too. The excitement of engaging with other players, that being as friend or foe, or somewhere in between, is what keeps this game fun to return to over and over.
I agree, I just started yesterday and decided to do a PvP round just to see what it was like, I got hard carried by the Ghost Fleet that my opponent happened to spawn next to lol.
Its a cool game but i’m not enjoying it how i thought i would. Thats because of mainly 3 reasons. 1) things get repetitive. Every time u start a new session or get shot down by other players, you rause your emissary to level it up again and do the same activities all over again. 2) toxic people let you sink far too often. When i’m making a fortress, chilling at the outpost, some random kiddo will just make sink my ship that has no crew and no loot on it. Soo you need to do everything again, gather resources and level up emissary flag (again repetitive). Also, our duo ALWAYS faces ships of 3 or 4 people. Wtf is that. How are you supposed to compete. Every encounter is a secure sink for us.. 3) but the biggest problem for me is, that there is no real objective. The first day i was super hyped because i had the objective in mind to safe for money to buy my ship. After i bought it? No objective. Who cares if i have 400k gold or 5 million.. i can just buy cosmetics with it and i’m just using 1 or 2 sets anyway.. idk. Not the thing i expected from the game. After a session of 2 hours i get completely bored fron it and dont touch it again the whole day. The next day i’m hyped again to seal the sees, but again because of this 3 reasons after 2 hours it gets boring again
The thing is, if People don't like PvP, there is always the option for Safer Seas, where you can't encounter any other Player Crews. Before Safer Seas there was a minor "Code" (not Rule) that new Spawns or Swabbies wont get attacked, some Players still live by this Rule but I can absolutely understand any1 who doesnt. Sometimes you want the Supplies, sometimes you want Commendations, many Reasons to sink *anyone*, PLUS in the end it's a Sandbox Game, you don't even NEED a reason to sink anyone. "Sandbox" would also explain why you dont like the Gameplay Loop (1) and feel like you have no real objective (3) D: I understand you and anyone who doesn't like that, sandbox is not for everyone. Best Tip I could give is to try SoT with a "I log in, set sail, then I wait and see what happens" mindset, there are limited "achievable" things, and those that are, are cosmetic by nature
@@madhatt0r819 dont get me wrong, i like pvp, but its not balanced without an anctual matchmaking based on skills or crew members. Fair enough. I apologize for assuming.
I hate to say it but Skulls & Bones is a pretty looking game - the cartoon aesthetic wastes the graphic capabilities of modern consoles (it was originally developed when processor was far more restricted)
No one cares about pretty graphics. There’s so much about this game that makes it 100x better than skull and bones. It’s funner to play, has more in depth gameplay, more interesting lore, more aesthetically pleasing ambience and world, has more to do, role playing capabilities, and endless always to play. Skull and bones is a glorified arcade game. I’ve played more interesting games in Chuck E Cheese
@@brendanlove9739 EDIT “Not everyone cares about pretty graphics…”. As for game play - this is a personal taste and not everyone has to like the same thing - this is no WRONG taste just different taste. All opinions are valid, except those that universal sweeping statements that start either “EVERYONE’ or “NO-ONE” - if universal statements were true, then the games I liked would be the same that you liked etc.
@@SighManP I suppose so, but still, I think that having graphics be your end all reason to like a game is a little shallow. Trust me, I love good graphics in games, but it’s a secondary for me. And sometime these games that focus on art more than realism look better because of it. I would never want sea of thieves to be realistic. The whole vibe of the game is more about playing up the caricature of pirates and living out a pirate fantasy rather than playing as a realistic pirate. Also the graphics being this artsy and simplistic means they have more resources for more important things, like actual content. If the game had amazing, realistic graphics then we’d still be stuck in the days when there wasn’t anything to do in the game because all of the game’s resources would be going to the graphics. Hell, even then the water physics look absolutely incredible, better than any other game I’ve ever played. I just can’t realistically see a reason that a person would like Skull and Bonds over Sea of Thieves. Maybe if it was what it was originally intended, which was basically Assassins creed Black Flag but without the assassins. That game would be cool. But that’s not what we got. Instead, we got World of Warships 1700s Edition, which is just not interesting to a lot of people. Could you give some more in depth reasons why you think Skull and Bones is better? There’s got to be more to it than just graphics. Have you ever even tried Sea of Thieves?
@@brendanlove9739 👍 Totally true that I haven’t tried Sea of Thieves yet (Note that I will happily try it), However I did play Skull & Bones for the 3 days of the free Beta and thoroughly enjoyed it BUT in my opinion, I didn’t think the gameplay of S&B was worth the full price (it’s certainly not a AAA game). My original comment though was that I preferred the LOOK of S&B as it used more of the graphic capability of the PS5. Having played computer games since 1981 (I’m old), I tired of the cartoon look many decades ago. I appreciate though other folks enjoy that look but it’s not to my taste. I will not dispute that the gameplay of Sea of Thieves MIGHT be better than S&B but that too is a personal taste. I remember a pirate game from 40 years ago called Plunder which S&B’s gameplay pleasantly reminded me of. Also I 100% agree that S&B was original rumoured to be a far different (better?) game but of course that never arrived.
@@SighManP In that case I definitely highly recommend you give it a shot. It’s understandable to get tired of that look. Overall, I’m pretty sure that the graphics are inspired by those older games These are the same people that made Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong. And there’s Monkey Island stuff that got added earlier last year which you can tell heavily inspired a lot of the aesthetics. I can see why at first glance it could be written off, but overall SoT is one of the most pleasing to the eyes games to play. And if you’re not a fan of the look, after dipping your toes into it you understand why it’s the way it is. Everything clicks and then the rest is history. The main allure of the game is just how free you are to go do what you want. There are no mission objectives (unless you play the tall tales, but even those have really loose guidelines.) Everyone always talks about how they want to play a “sandbox” game. This game is the closest I’ve ever seen a game actually be an open sandbox. You can search for treasure, hunt skeletons, ghosts, or sea monsters, or other pirates if you want to pvp. You can attack forts, solve mysteries, shoot yourself out of cannons, do those tall tales I mentioned, some of which are based on Pirates of the Caribbean and have characters like Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones in it, go fishing, or just sail the ocean at your heart’s content, which is really fun because controlling the ship is really immersive. You have to manually, steer the ship, aim the sails into the wind and put them up and down, weight the anchor, repair the ship with planks of wood, load the cannons , all while looking out for skeletons and sea monsters or rival pirates wanting to take your loot. It is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Alright, I’m hopping off my soap box now lol

It’s almost necessary although you can join a crew with randoms which is nice.

Gameplay and graphics make it look like it's intended for pubescent children
