    • @ItsTrainBoy

      That is a hobby knife my brother, but sadly was my only Exacto blade during recording :/
      Personally I’d recommend nail clippers over anything for the job? The way those cut can be varied though so knives end up being simpler if you’re careful haha

    I'm not sure if I've said this before, but seeing these videos makes me like N Scale more and more.
    I always thought it was too small and fragile (jokes on me, of course, since Z Scale is smaller), but those flatbeds look pretty sturdy!

    Yeah, I've just finished a Peco OO LMS Cattle Truck and it's a real shame so few railway modellers build wagon/coach kits these days due to the amount of good r-t-r models turning people away from kit-building. Someone once said that railway modellers are keen to glue together and paint plastic building kits with 4 sides and a roof, but add 4 wheels under it and it suddenly seems impossible.

    • @ItsTrainBoy
      @ItsTrainBoy  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It really is a shame!! I think maybe it's the same with many hobbies though, people are quick to buy rather than build these days. I can’t say I’m much different being a heavy EZ-track user since I hate the process of ballasting, but I do feel like it gives the models more personality when you use yours in the process haha

    I've got a real train question for you. So, I've had a wooden train set for a while and it had a rail car that had what I would call a "cradle" that tilted sideways I would assume to dump something out. Does that type of car exist in real life? And what is that car called?

    • @ItsTrainBoy
      @ItsTrainBoy  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It sounds like a dumping wagon or a dump car!! Also you’re absolutely right homie if they’re what I’m thinking they are that’s exactly what they’d do too. It could also be one of those ore mining wagons? But ultimately those serve the same purpose, here’s some info on some American ones if you’re interested!! :)

    • @thetoycollectorofseville6428
      @thetoycollectorofseville6428 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ItsTrainBoy When I had that set I would always imagine a little baby in that car and I would rock it to sleep, because of the way the cradle moved side to side rather than front to back like a traditional dump truck.

    Ok kinda dumb and obvious question: What the hell IS a bolster wagon? What was their function?

    • @ItsTrainBoy
      @ItsTrainBoy  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It’s pretty much a flat wagon that in this case is paired with another of the same type to haul something long and kinda flatter; that could be wood or rails or a bunch of stuff. They’re the smaller version of the larger ones you’d see on something like Thomas that are single units :)

    "I still don't feel comfortable with a hobby knife", Uh... you're forgetting to brace the part with your thumb... Its kinda like whittling. You may also want a couple of heavier duty utility knives that have a good grip (dont forget to keep your knives razor sharp, it makes them safer). After learning how to use a knife, you should now have far fewer accidents, the knife should cut more cleanly and smoothly. I've been using hobby knives since the age of five and learned somethings the easy way, some the hard way.

    • @ItsTrainBoy
      @ItsTrainBoy  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      It’s highly disturbing that a parent would allow a 5 year old even near an exacto knife? That’s not the hard way that’s kinda just recklessness.
      I also sadly found that technique didn’t really help much here since there’s not room to brace the knife with the thumb; I use that more with larger surfaces when the flush isn’t as close to the body. Anyone who uses a model knife should have a level of discomfort for basic safety in my opinion haha, gloves can be a help if they’re rated for such too. I found the issue more in the blade as the one I had was a larger one than a shorter one. If anything model clippers do the job cleanest :)

    • @1471SirFrederickBanbury
      @1471SirFrederickBanbury 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ItsTrainBoy shame that the thumb technique didn’t work for you. My grandfather introduced me to model kits at that age, he was born in 1936, so he was used the old fashioned way of giving a kid a knife and teaching them to whittle at a young age. I only have baldy cut myself once (because it was a dull curved blade on a plastic scalpel handle) but now, as long as I’ve made sure that the knife has been recently stoned and stropped, I left the discomfort behind years ago, but razor saws, I never have trusted those things!
