A quick correction: The original Gameboy models actually _were_ wider than they were tall. The resolution is 160x144. The GB Boy stretches it out to a 4:3 aspect ratio.
You can set the palette used by the GB Boy Colour (just like on the original hardware), when playing original non-colour cartridges, by pressing the D-Pad and buttons during the bootup. Several palettes are available. More details here : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy_Color
You missed that there were two other colours available for the shell of this unit! Take a look at the side of the box it came in. From the clip passing by quickly, it looked like there was a pink unit available.
Out of interest, does that Not For Resale version of Mario Power Tennis play in some sort of demo mode, or is it literally the same as the retail game just with a different label?
These this are weird, some are shaped like an Gameboy Advance SP, some are designed to be like a Gameboy Color, some have built in games, some don't. It's interesting.
Those old Gameboy games probably aren't so much worn out as just dirty in the connector. They're fairly easy to clean if you dip a q-tip in rubbing alcohol and squeeze out excess, and scrub it back and forth across the connector in the cartridge.
Love your show, Just subbed. I like how you cover every aspect of the product. By the end of it I feel like iv owned it and know everything about it. Every Ep is like getting a new gift to enjoy for a moment. Your good at what you do, Keep up the good work :)
+Will Camick Thanks! I do try to go over every detail both because those mundane little things are interesting to me and I'm sure they're interesting to viewers like you. Thanks again for watching!
+Skate6788 Yep! I did it years ago and thought it would be an improvement but it's actually worse! It doesn't feel as solid and the d-pad is completely different and awful!
Hey man, I’ve been. Fan of yours for quite a while now and while I absolutely love your investigative stuff, and damn it’s really good (and funny) , I kind of wish you were still collecting strange devices. There are so many out there now I’m sure it would drive any sand person crazy trying to keep up with but I hope you do a few of these type videos once in a while still. Thanks for all the great content.
I think this may be a kind of rare version of the GB Boy Colour that was replicating the Game Boy Color. The differences being that this one looks like a GBA SP, doesn’t have built in games, has a rechargeable battery, and a brightness slider.
Thanks! I have more hardware to review but a lot of it will have to wait for my schedule to free up in the coming months. I got good stuff on the way though!
StopDrop&Retro The colours are messed up because the console attempts to colour games a different way to the old Gameboy Color, so it looks really weird.
All i want is a backlit GBA with bigger screen. Horizontal layout, not vertical. And zero latency, Android is not conductive to low-latency emulation. That ghosting BTW, that's cute, that's very much akin to Sharp CSTN displays, perhaps Sharp PNLC. You remember how original GBA worked, it had a passive colour matrix STN display which would retain and slowly fade the image over many, many seconds when you turned off the power, but was actually rather swift when actively driven. Well half of it was at any given time, because it was actually interlaced.
+Siana Gearz I wanted a back lit original GBA but I hear the screen parts are no longer sold. I hear the Revo K101 is a good alternative though. You should look into it!
Good review! I own one of these and the GBC version and I have to say I like the GB Boy Colour in the GBC form factor better. Both are certainly worth owning, but the controls feel way better on the GBC version, not to mention the built-in games.
+Michael Thompson Thanks! I'm surprised to hear the controls are better on the GBC version. I've seen at least one person do a d-pad swap with an original GBC.
Wow, that's a different shape of the GB Boy Colour I usually see, the ones that I mostly see are the ones that look alot like a Game Boy Color not a GBA SP.
PsykohGames yh but the GB boy colour has backlit, I think the GB boy colour sp is shit because u can only play GBC games which would stick out, the only reason y people would consider this over the GB boy colour is because of the rechargeable battery
+buffaloj0e Thanks! Yeah, I agree, but I just wanted to explain how my channel works to those who kept asking for the review in the past. And it helps those who request stuff in the future to understand that if I'm not interested in something it's nothing personal, I just don't think it'll make a good video for everyone. Thanks for watching and thanks your compliment!
Another product from AliExpress I see. Trying getting use to the game cartridge sticking out cause Game Boy and Game Boy Color games are the only thing that works with this.
+Prometheus Darkstar Thanks for noticing that! Do you think slowing down the footage a tiny bit could help emphasize that it's old footage or should I leave it alone?
Wow I only saw the version of the Game Boy Color that looks the same like the other one but it says color and the color words actually have color and it's good but both of them look cool
I first tout that the graphics in supermarioland were similar to that of supermariobros2,but when skipping from gameboy to supergameboy, it turns out that the graphics are more similare or even more simple then supermariobros, haha lol,
The GB Boy Colour with the normal gameboy form factor is the better device - bought one several months back. Mine doesn't have any games built in, however. Full size GB carts sticking out on your model is just a deal breaker for me. The d-pad and buttons are the only nitpick I have about it - they aren't as good as the original Gameboy buttons, but they work well enough for me. Batteries last forever using 4 x NiMH rechargeable AA's, and the backlit screen is sweet. Weird thing is that when I bought mine (with the normal GB form factor), it was $27 or something on AliExpress - today they're $81 on there! At $27 it was a steal - probably one of the best items I bought in 2015 (especially coupled with the Gameboy Everdrive). I don't know who will buy it at $81, though. The model you reviewed here is going for $42 on there today - better price, but I just don't like that cartridge sticking out.
+Who Who Yeah, I should have shown more. I later got the Mega Man GB game and it looks really good on it! It surprised me, it even looks better than on an authentic GB Color.
I for one love this thing. I mainly play original GB/GBC games and the "tongue" doesn't bother me... I guess I don't care about "form factor", all I want to do is play the things, not dress them for a pageant! Lol.
It's ironic that I've never seen this version of the GB Boy Colour. After having taken the standard GB Boy Colour apart, I can see why your SP Version doesn't have the games built in. It's actually sad to me to see though.
Yeah, I haven't seen any of the SP GB Boy clones with the games built in. I wish it did because then you wouldn't have the cart sticking out all the time.
StopDrop&Retro The built in games on the standard GB boy colour are on what is basically a flash cart, soldered onto the primary PCB inside the housing, and in the cart slot is a metal pin that when you insert a cartridge bridges the connection, allowing you to play your cartridge instead of the built in games. TLDR: There's. flash cart inside the console, and you can only play the built in games if you don't Putin your own game cart. Also, all the built in games are arcade style primarily, and one you shut off the system, the save is instantly gone, there is no score saving even. I am waiting on an overdrive PCB, going to see if I can replace the built in cart with that instead, then I can load whatever games, and have them save!!
Shame it's not GBA compatible. But hey, at least it's got a backlight. Also, I absolutely love how they use the British spelling of Colour which is quite funny considering Hong Kong hasn't been British controlled since 1999. I wonder why the Chinese used the Commonwealth spelling while the Japanese used the American spelling of Color? It's just a shame it had neither built in games or a way of ripping ROMs from the cartridges, saving them and playing them without the cartridge in there... I mean, yeah, Nintendo's not going to be pleased but when did China ever give a shit about that?
The Gameboy sp is one of the worst form factors of all time. Clamshells are shit unless the lid flips all the way around and become a grip. The original GBA is the most ergonomic system they have ever made.
Nice! I might have to pick up one of those everdrives, let me know how it turns out! Also- make sure to play the Mega Man games on the GB Boy the stretched out scree actually works REALLY well with those games!
A quick correction: The original Gameboy models actually _were_ wider than they were tall. The resolution is 160x144. The GB Boy stretches it out to a 4:3 aspect ratio.
10:54 face reveal tho
Found your video on reddit. Good stuff!
look who`s here =)
nice cuckmment
Of course you would be in a Game Boy video....
Weird, my GB boy color has a fake Gameboy color case. It had an option
for built in games, I had one of each, one with, and one without.
You can set the palette used by the GB Boy Colour (just like on the original hardware), when playing original non-colour cartridges, by pressing the D-Pad and buttons during the bootup. Several palettes are available.

+Michael Quattrocchi THANKS!!! I totally forgot about that feature!!
Hi, what is the exact size of the LCD (total size and game-only-part size) in mm ? Thanks in advance, great review !
Thank you! I just measured it, the screen is 48mm wide and 35mm tall.
Also, why would the gameboy need a microphone jack?
Where can you get these GB Colours?
i know this is unrelated but does the kirbys dreamland 2 cartridge use a game battery?
Another reason to get this one is that it uses a rechargeable battery while the other gb boy uses two AA batterys
True. If only they would fix the aspect ratio these could be really nice handhelds.
Forward to 5 min. Before that it's opening a cardboard box and explaining why he made a video
KaWouter ikr.. just so annoying to listen to him rant about...
yoginc nobody cares
Nigga that's the best part
Not all heroes where capes ,garcias
You missed that there were two other colours available for the shell of this unit! Take a look at the side of the box it came in. From the clip passing by quickly, it looked like there was a pink unit available.
+Rocky1138 Yeah, the seller only had Silver and Blue, not Pink.
the SP GB boy colour is £15, the GB boy colour is £25 which one shall I get?
17:29 for face reveal
Out of interest, does that Not For Resale version of Mario Power Tennis play in some sort of demo mode, or is it literally the same as the retail game just with a different label?
so why did his Gameboy sp have no identifying information?
Is it only the built in games on GB boys that run faster or do the games from carts run fast too?
I've been binge watching all your videos and boy am i so happy i did. you make great videos man
+NolanRyan992 Thanks! I've got some great hardware reviews coming up this year!
These this are weird, some are shaped like an Gameboy Advance SP, some are designed to be like a Gameboy Color, some have built in games, some don't. It's interesting.
Where did you get yours? I can't find the clear green one ANYwhere.
+Jake Lee On the side of the box it only shows blue, silver, black and pink. I got it off Ali-Express and the seller only had blue and silver
hey i watched a couple of your videos, and you have a talent i subed
Thanks! I'm working on more stuff!
StopDrop&Retro go on wish you find psp knock off there
Im so Glad I subscribed to you channel man, nice stuff you bring in....
Thanks! More obscure handhelds on the way!
What type of power adaptor does it use
do you know the Open Pandora ?
Does that retail unit play games other than Mario Tennis?
Those old Gameboy games probably aren't so much worn out as just dirty in the connector. They're fairly easy to clean if you dip a q-tip in rubbing alcohol and squeeze out excess, and scrub it back and forth across the connector in the cartridge.

Your content is unique and seeing different reviews on these products has entertained me, sub obtained.
Thanks! I have more hardware to review but a lot of it will have to wait for my schedule to free up in the coming months. I got good stuff on the way though!
StopDrop&Retro The colours are messed up because the console attempts to colour games a different way to the old Gameboy Color, so it looks really weird.
2 questions. How much was it (including shipping) Where did you get it? (website if you have it)
+Steven Manchester It was $30, shipping was free from AliExpress
@4:12, @4:37, @7:07, @8:57, @11:03, @12:25, @18:29, @19:27, @19:57, @20:17, @20:36, @20:42, @21:53, @22:18, @22:28, @22:42, @22:45, @23:01, & @24:28 ADVANCE ADVANCE!! Game boy ADVANCE SP, & @8:51 & @8:59 it's EARphoneS/HEADphoneS/audio-out jack, not microphone

+Siana Gearz I wanted a back lit original GBA but I hear the screen parts are no longer sold. I hear the Revo K101 is a good alternative though. You should look into it!
7:10 You look like David Schwimmer in the reflection off the screen ...or is that something a stocker would say?! 😅
The builtin games are an odd second cart soldered on internally, probably isn't enough space in this model
FACE REVEAL @ 7:11 !!! I KNEW YOU WEREN'T A ROBOT! YOU LIED TO ME!!!
uhhhh.. this is the skin of a human I killed to deceive you! My robot deception module is unbeatable!
StopDrop&Retro can i have my skin back yet?
Hes inspector gadget
Oh..... so your a terminator?
He's not a robot YET, but with your funding, he can be in every household!
+StopDrop&Retro What I found is that it needs to be broken in with a few good sessions.
I've got 2 of the GBC version both were like that for me.
@@stridermt2k Same. I have a few now (gotta get all them colors) and I use them almost daily for a quick tetris fix or whatever.
there are two GB BOY COLOUR models. one like the GBC and one like the GBA sp
the GBC-like model has the free games and the GBA SP -like model does not
some GBC-like ones do, some don't, you have to be careful
Where can I buy this
Go onto Aliexpress and look up GB Boy
From wich store you bought it? I am gonna Get 1 too
could you review the GPS XD?
if you buy one for me, then sure!
StopDrop&Retro LOL, just got mine in the mail yesterday. Have you heard of it?
StopDrop&Retro oops, just realized my typo. it's GPD XD
17:35 Oh hey, it's Mackey
Hey! It's one of the few 3D games on Gameboy/Gameboy Colour!
lets design it exclusively for z80 game boy/color games put it in a sp shell but have the same cut out cartridge slot
+David Brailsford I wish they had made it so GB carts could go all the way in! It would be a perfect device for me then!
i am in love with your channel lmao
Wow, that's a different shape of the GB Boy Colour I usually see, the ones that I mostly see are the ones that look alot like a Game Boy Color not a GBA SP.
Wow Psykoh, really roasted the GBC there.
PsykohGames yh but the GB boy colour has backlit, I think the GB boy colour sp is shit because u can only play GBC games which would stick out, the only reason y people would consider this over the GB boy colour is because of the rechargeable battery
This is the first time I've ever found out this one has a prequel.
I don't think you have to explain or justify what you do and don't review, the quality of the content speaks for itself, keep up the good work.
Aliexpress
Thanks
Another product from AliExpress I see. Trying getting use to the game cartridge sticking out cause Game Boy and Game Boy Color games are the only thing that works with this.
I was so annoyed you didn't take of the plastic around the screen lol
I love the sepia color you use for your flashbacks.
+Prometheus Darkstar Thanks for noticing that! Do you think slowing down the footage a tiny bit could help emphasize that it's old footage or should I leave it alone?
+StopDrop&Retro Yeah that might work nicely!
I think I'll try it in the future and see if it's not too distracting. Thanks!
Oh know I seen your face! lol love these videos!
how much is it
They go for about $25-30 last I checked. You can still find them on Aliexpress

That kiosk is so cool
Wow I only saw the version of the Game Boy Color that looks the same like the other one but it says color and the color words actually have color and it's good but both of them look cool
Considering there are no shoulder buttons I'm surprised you thought that maybe this played gba games
+Joe Digger eh, the slot was there so why not try it, if it worked that would be one hell of an interesting point!
I first tout that the graphics in supermarioland were similar to that of supermariobros2,but when skipping from gameboy to supergameboy, it turns out that the graphics are more similare or even more simple then supermariobros, haha lol,
Who else was hoping the buttons would be blue on the silver one
Headphone jack?
Adrian Castravete no iPhone 7 vibes here 😂 it has one and works good, imo better than the gba
Adrian Castravete the genuine SP from Nintendo did not have one, this is actually just a Gameboy colour in a SP form factor
lol the instructions were just Xeroxed on a piece of paper.
The GB Boy Colour with the normal gameboy form factor is the better device - bought one several months back. Mine doesn't have any games built in, however. +Michael Quattrocchi Agreed, the GBC shaped one is great. Swap the dpad out for a GB Pocket one though!
The Gucci model is like 30$ on eBay
Gbc*
Inflation is a bitch
Nice I had a silver GBA SP.. got it just to play doom on lol. Wish I'd hung on to it!
i wanted to see more of that crispy screen
+Who Who Yeah, I should have shown more. I later got the Mega Man GB game and it looks really good on it! It surprised me, it even looks better than on an authentic GB Color.
is there like a clone gb sp??
yes both types, they have an sd slot too, play nes roms and mp3's retrogametech reviewed them both.
my gb boy colour that looks like a gameboy color has no built in games
+MrJ0mmy I hear some didn't have the built in games, I think there might have been different versions.
You will make a review on a fake Gba console????? :D
+Branche Moi Ça That's what we're all about!!
really enjoying your content
The video starts at 05:00
10:53 Nice goatee bruh
+FriendofSonic haha, yeah you guys are getting spoiled with the amount of face reveals now that I'm reviewing so many devices with shiny screens!
lucky no batterys! Looks great!
Game Boy Boy Colour SP! what a long name.
This is one in the original GBC form and with the built-in games: th-cam.com/video/DBHSM1fJ7x4/w-d-xo.html
somebody send him a whetstone.
It's because you got the sp version you need the original
There is another Gb boy coulor based off the actauale game boy color
Does this play GBA??
no
If you have bad eyes this is a LOT better than the real thing. My fave handheld game is Tetris DX
Review the pxp3
Since gb boys run 20% faster, you should use em in a speed run
holy shit. I never thought of that!
GB Boy Colour like a clam sticking the tongue out.
But I am getting one of those two tomorrow or the next day not tomorrow maybe
I for one love this thing. I mainly play original GB/GBC games and the "tongue" doesn't bother me... I guess I don't care about "form factor", all I want to do is play the things, not dress them for a pageant! Lol.
begins at 4:05
To me, the better option would be an XPERIA Play.
It's ironic that I've never seen this version of the GB Boy Colour.
After having taken the standard GB Boy Colour apart, I can see why your SP Version doesn't have the games built in.
It's actually sad to me to see though.

Shame it's not GBA compatible.
But hey, at least it's got a backlight.

That's a fake GBC. Why's it shaped like a Gameboy SP? I grew up in the gameboy era and that's definitely not a gameboy color.
+CURTIS CONYER Just watch the video! They mad another one before this that did look like a regular GBC but it seems they don't make it anymore.
it sure has coloUrs
+Alexas Murauskas hahahaha
It's just like a sp system
The GB BOY Colour ehich looks like the Game Boy Color is way better.
Yeah these systems are complete shit. Support the real systems like a champion! Thanks for the video bro.

The Gameboy sp is one of the worst form factors of all time. Clamshells are shit unless the lid flips all the way around and become a grip. The original GBA is the most ergonomic system they have ever made.
gf
game fing or girl friend
Sooo.. GB Boy Color=Gameboy Boy Color
That device is a complete waste of time... why??
Why would you play on a device that is so awkward to hold due to the position of the cartridge jutting out...
😂
Just bought this with an everdrive for it
Nice! I might have to pick up one of those everdrives, let me know how it turns out! Also- make sure to play the Mega Man games on the GB Boy the stretched out scree actually works REALLY well with those games!
+StopDrop&Retro I have the gb boy colour (gameboy pocket size) and the Everdrive works perfectly.
The gameboy is in English because there isn't a word that means Gameboy without a literal translation
You damaged your table :O
+Alan Cavazos haha, this table takes a beating. I'll keep using it even if it's only standing on three legs. That should make unboxings exciting!
