@@FrezzyYT Should be not that hard. There are PCB's available for a Gameboy Zero. You could easily hack that up to the gbc buttons. A GBA SP is more logical to put inside a GB DMG because of the backlight/Frontlight

why not just remove the game link cable port? and solder a new on - off switch so that u dont have to modify the case? or new location for link cable ?
Just drop a GBC or GBP dpad in there, you can also change the oscillator for the correct one. Only real issue is the aspect ratio and missing sound channels in some games, both of which are acceptable compromises for the price and the backlight.
I was just thinking this! I’ve asked on aliexpress…. The dpad and the start select are different… tons of different shells too…. But the guys have told me they don’t fit obviously…. But the modded ones for sale are awesome

The branding can be changed with stickers and new custom screen lens, if you're a real stickler for having the Game Boy name on your device, but that's a bit silly if you ask me. A far more interesting mod would be sticking a GBA SP into a GB Color shell or similar form factor.
I would've tried unwelding the ports/ knobs from both, and wired the originals to the gb boy board and glued them inside to the case so you wouldn't have had to cut out the sides as much as you did.
If you had gone with an opaque shell, some of these flaws could have been fixed with a bit of filling putty, and a coat of paint. To fix the A and B button positions, you could go with some simple double-sided copper clad board, and solder down a couple of strips to reposition the button contacts. It would have added a couple of millimeters to the height of the buttons, but that could be fixed with some light filing on the button caps, I think. As for the built in flash cart, you might even be able to mount that in a gameboy cartridge. The contacts migh match up, well enough. I mean, I don't see why they wouldn't, why the little PCB there would be doing more than a Chinese multi-cart would.

And result was kinda obvious from the get go, if screen difference didn't make it obvious, you just needed to compare port and thumbwheel position between two to see that it wouldn't end well. So instead of one original GBC and one decent knockoff you ended up with one that is worse than either of two by themselves. And I wouldn't call GB Boy Colour cheaply made, I have few, they're not really far off from original gameboy quality. Apart from screen ratio (LCD image quality is not terrible, it's great, especially when compared with unlit screen), another "problem" is different dpad and that AFAIK it doesn't actually have IR on the board, only window in case, but no hardware behind it. Everything else is on spot, even link cable works and you can play multiplayer games even with real GBC. I tried with F-1 Race of which I have two carts. Also, these are not new, I bought mine about three years ago and they weren't new then. Additionally I didn't noticed "bunch of different ones", only GB Boy (this is remake of original GameBoy, but not backlit), GB Boy Colour and GB Boy Colour variant that looks like GBA SP. Unless you count all those crappy x in 1 handheld consoles which are actually handheld NES in a chip consoles.

Yep, they use the same case. They’re typically semi-transparent looking. But they fit both Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. Of course there are some special games that don’t fit like Pokemon Pinball, Game Boy Camera, etc. Hope your son enjoys it!
Could even be possible to replace the memory chip with an microsd reader. Or with a USB stick (with the port replaced with a smaller connecter located somewhere else in the system.)
No, it uses a very different connection and driver. But in my next tutorial I'll be showing how to do the AGS-101 backlit GameBoy Color mod. It's still not easy, but it's much easier than it used to be now.
Anthony Sullender Definitely not possible. The GB Boy screen is backlit and comes from a cellphone or a similar sort of device. Requires very different driver board and code to run it.
Unfortunately it's not that simple. But BennVenn makes a no solder ribbon now that lets you connect an AGS-101 screen directly to the CGB circuit board.

I have a GB Boy Colour in my hands right now, and I'd rather have cheap Chinese plastic than the mess this turned out to be. Somebody had to try it to let other people learn from this mistake though. I gotta say though, cool intro.

Hello! I use 30 gauge Kynar wire. Yes you can fit an original D Pad on a GB Boy (I have another video about this). And no I think the battery cover is different.

It's just for fun :) Also, installing a backlit screen is MUCH easier now. Back when I made this video it was a much more complex process, so this was an experiment to make something simpler. Obviously not a very good end result, though.
The fact that you've just called the best GB/GBC player available terrible isn't the best thing to do. The gaming community loves the GB Boy Colour due to it costing £25 and being so much better than any alternative for playing older games. It also has the word Colour spelt correctly as it's the proper English spelling. GB Boy Colour + EDGB = Best Emulator for old school games. No need to destroy original consoles by modding them with rubbish backlights which actually look terrible.
Mod very bad, you destroy a clone that the minor is well built to have an original GBC with the casing shatters, without being able to assemble the screws and that does not fit the screen ratio.
I cringed the whole time while you took a POS $20 GBC repro and then destroyed a $20 original shell to cram it inside it in the worst way possible. Just buy a frickin back lit screen 🤦

Its not possible. Unless you 3d print a design for the gbc into a dmg, its not possible
I think the closest that has been done is the "Game Boy Color mode only" version of the Game Boy Advance in an original Game Boy.

I would of just changed the d-pad and the membrane's . I have a Blue GB Boy Colour and there is nothing wrong with the plastic shell case.

Removing the rom chip takes all the fun away.... It just plays carts now like a normal GB..... No point in this re shell now.
