Port Jefferson Ferry - Convenient, but run down and shabby

  • The Port Jeff Ferry runs between Bridgeport Connecticut and Port Jefferson on Long Island. It is a vehicle ferry with space for around 120 vehicles and 1,000 passengers. It could be described as quaint. Shabby is another word for it.

    The funny thing is the ferry that these ones replaced which are allot older are in better shape now than the new ones.

    You should try to visit Washington state, there's a bunch of islands that you can only get to by ferry. Similar experience but the destination, like Orca's Island, are very nice. Seems they all use boats that are really old. Reminds me of the Star Ferry in Hong Kong.

    Only one ferry has instant access to the elevator which is the MV Park City

    the rows of vehicles boarding the ferry is based on sizes. This helps organize and boarding process

      Oh, I guess that’s why a truck/trailer combo goes first. Makes sense.

    The only weird thing about these ferries is the shape of them because of how the elevator shaft is that big long box sticking out the back of it and the way they designed the interior of the vessels is kind of odd

      Maybe those elevators were retrofitted?

    • @Bombiedude.
      @Bombiedude. 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well it is possible that they were added at a later time and the original ones are actually inside but completelly locked off

    Well even though it is run down it gets the job done which is the good thing

      If the job is to make a ship move across the water, yeah it gets the job done.

    I use that ferry every time I go to CT from LI. Cuts my driving time literally in more than half. If I were to drive there it'd be almost 3 hours. Take the ferry, and I'm only driving for about an hour, while the ferry trip is about an hour and a half if I'm remembering correctly. So travel time is still the same, but I'm not driving as much. It's not that I mind driving, it's just I hate driving more than 3 hours nonstop. Anything more than that and I would want to take a train, ferry, plane etc.

      It’s a great time saver between Eastern LI and CT @Mike Uchman. I just wish it wasn’t so run down

      @@TravelwithMark Yeah the ferries are getting old and run down. I think the newest of the Port Jeff ferries is the Grand Republic that was built in 2003. There was another Grand Republic, but it was older and sold to another company before the newer one was built. I remember having personally ridden the Park City and the PT Barnum. Haven't been on the newer Grand Republic yet that I remember, but I THINK I've been on the older one before it was sold.

      @@Mikey109105 seems like they made a bunch of makeshift changes for Covid. Maybe over time they’ll spruce them up a bit. It’s all functional and everything, just feels very unloved

      @@TravelwithMark I hope so, they used to be very nice before they let them start looking run down.

      @@TravelwithMark I have taken both the BP/PJ and NL/OP ferries many, many times. I disagree that taking the ferry is a great time saver during off-peak traffic times. Considering that you need to wait on the dock to board and then wait a little to disembark, the whole process approaches two hours. During peak times, then, yes. It also costs at least double what it costs to drive around, so it is a luxury that you pay a premium for. Of course, it also depends on where you live. I live in central Long Island, but if you live out East on the North Fork, and you're traveling to Massachusetts or RI, then the NL/OP ferry is definitely the way to go. In my experience, the appeal of the ferry is that it is a relaxing experience that bypasses the worst part of the Long Island/Connecticut trip. If you're willing to pay double to reduce the stress of the trip, or you want to save money by enduring the traffic and crappy roads, then that's the motivation for the choice.

    Can I still board the ferry without a car?

    • @TravelwithMark
      @TravelwithMark  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, you board through the terminal building onto a gangway at the side.
