  • I walk through the village of Port Jefferson located in Suffolk County, Long Island, NY. This quiet little village is known for its ferry to Bridgeport, Connecticut and its shipbuilding industry. There are many different stores and restaurants all along the busy areas of Main Street, East Main Street, and Broadway.

I live in Smithtown and I worked at the Port jeff yact club during the summer. I’m in high school. Port Jeff may seem quiet during a weekday. But if you go on a friday or saturday night it is packed with people everywhere.

I lived on Long Island (Ronkonkoma) in 2002 for a few months. I remember going to Port Jefferson a couple of times and it was a lot of fun. I remember going to a place called Port Jazz and they had a cool jazz group with all kinds of instruments playing that night. Good times.

Guy that said you can't film the ferry doesn't know what he is talking about. Your 1st amendment gives you the right to film anything you can see with your eyes. If the ferry guy doesn't like that he can hide the PUBLIC ferry.

You are allowed to record anything you can see from a public space, doesn’t matter if it’s a boat, police station or government facility. First amendment, and Supreme Court has ruled on it! So record what you want to, no expectation of privacy in public.

Lived in Port Jeff during my 7th grade year (early '80s). This tour brings back a lot of memories. Stores may have changed many times over in the last 35+ years but structures remain like a snapshot in time. Wish you would have circled back around and hit Main St between East Main and Broadway. Spent many hours at a little mall there that had an arcade and record store. Can't imagine it's still around.

They cannot tell you not to film it unless there are signs that explicitly says private property, at which point you can only film with the permission of the owner. The marina and docks for the ferries are all public property as far as I am aware, so they cannot legally tell you no filming. Even the police would tell you you can film all you want because it's not private property. Also, that horn you heard sounds like the fire department. Some fire departments used to blow their horn once at noon daily. I guess Port Jeff still does. But then you said it's 10:30 so it had only been about 20 minutes so not sure whey the horn went off that early.

I live on Long Island and have come away from Port Jeff many times thinking that this place has to be one of the most boring places on the face of the earth. Plus, all of those Harley owners that plug up the streets parked and primping on weekends and fill the town’s ears with unnecessary engine noise is an added bonus if you like your boredom with a scoop of annoyance. The reason people think it could be a nice place to go is because of it’s harbor. The view is quite nice indeed, but the town itself (for the last 30 years) is a snooze fest for visitors. A few restaurants are ok (nothing you need to travel there for), there are not many shops to spend time in. Rather than shops and “walking town” businesses there are many non-public offices on the street with closed doors (real estate, accountants, etc.) and places like rinky dink salons, barbers and spas that are more for residents than visitors. This is that kind of place. Like Huntington, but even more boring than Huntington.
