  • We catch a winter Amtrak Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago. We have spectacular views of Glacier National Park and the high plans of Montana and North Dakota.

Note: Some footage in King St Station in Seattle was filmed the day before we left.

Very good! Nicely put together- good music, beautiful panoramic view of state to state and nature’s awesome natural beauty Empire Builder Train - I like it! Good BucketList of activities - Train Rides that is so different from the chaotic noise of airports and rushing passengers catching their flight. This train ride will be more of a luxurious experience for anyone who loves Rest and Relaxation. Good video!

I so hope to take this route in 2024. I’ve been on the Southwest Chief, the California Zephyr, and the Cardinal.

I've the South West Chief in Coach during Covid and the Zephyr in a bedroom. It's a tossup between the Zephyr and the Empire Builder in my opinion

I can't think of anything more awesome than sitting back in either the Observation car or your own roomette/bedroom & watching the snow falling as your train makes its way on its long-distance journey- just awesome, Mark. The Empire Builder is certainly a must - especially in winter traveling east to Chicago. Pleased to see you got to catch it given the recent problems in Chicago with the amount of snow - many long-distance trains were in fact canceled including another Amtrak train on my 'bucket list' the Calforian Zyphyer. I also think the Red Caps provide a great service for passengers. So pleased to see traditional dining has returned on the West Coast - hopefully, this will also happen on the East Coast - after all, who wants airline-style food when watching the beautiful countryside go past? An awesome train journey, Mark.

We were really lucky on this trip. All trains on this route were cancelled from the next day. Given that, and we flew into Seattle on one of the last Max-9 flights, and our upgrade to a presidential suite at the Hyatt in Chicago...we had one of the luckiest trips ever!

Guessing that part of town used to be better. StL (there to get to Empire Builder in Chicago, ) is in a simpler situation, Greyhound and Metro. Security turbed several away. Had been in Union Station, nearby, but was turned into commercial and now an aquarium.
    August. Rain in Montana.
Traditional menu, if you go/leave Seattle, and you get the snack bar that goes/comes from Portland, in Spokane.
Same in Southwest Chief at San Antonio. Traditional menu goes/comes to New Orleans. Snack bar to StL. White Castles option in snack bar (no beds or dining car) between STL and KCMO.
JEF station is being remodeled. Temporary trailer til then.

It's the thru cars from/to the Texas eagle attached to the sunset limited that have traditional dining from lax to San Antonio on days the SL runs, and flex dining from San Antonio to chi. SL has traditional dining it's entire length from lax to nol. The chief goes from lax to Chicago a more northern route through Colorado, Kansas etc and no where near Texas.(Also has traditional dining it's full route)
