I’ve a 2002 XJR that I bought 22 years ago. Love it.
On the throttle cables, I thought mine were grabbing and was looking to replace, turned out it was grime under the throttle tube. Snap shut lovely now. And as you’ll know, own an XJR for a while you’ll be changing the clutch slave seals.

Thanks buddy, appreciate that insight, hydraulic seals are on the list, they're always worth replacing even if they're not leaking when a bike gets to this age and mileage... just all part of the general consumables refurbishment... am looking forward to this project myself!
I priced a set of tires for my bike recently ($600 ) here in Canada. That's just for the tires, no installation. $100 for an oil change kit and $45 for two spark plugs ! My insurance renewal will be arriving soon and that will be over $1000 ! I might have to come out of retirement and get a part time job at this rate !
I know mate, they keep us poor, but they keep us sane aye !

Great idea for a project, maintenance throughout the bike to get it back to a mechanically as new condition. I always enjoy the maintenance videos, especially brakes. Good on you both Delboy and Penny for sharing your wisdom and experience and considerable time in making and editing these videos.
btw the vacuum cleaner joke made me smile as Vacuum cleaners are another of my interests. I have a SEBO BS360, Numatic NRV240-11 and a Leifheit Regulus push sweeper and I often use one to clean the other :)

Last year I bought a TDM 900 from 2003. I wanted to flip it so in the winter I did all big maintenance, which I all learned from you by watching your video's. As this was my first bike I did myself. I will follow this serie to see if I missed something and if I did all correctly.
Btw, after the bike was finished I really loved this bike and I still own it. I can't sell it. Now I'm making memories with the bike together with my daughter of 8. See is really enjoying the rides with her old man.

Awesome awesome awesome Del. Will be watching this with wide eyes, have always wanted an XJR1300. I have though two FJ1200s and 1 x frame up rebuild FJ1100 in the shed. I guess these might be considered the Father, Grandfather🧐 models to the XJR. Brilliant design and longevity.

As you probably remember I first found your channel looking for tips to help with the basic maintenance of my bike at the time and to this day those basic maintenance tips and tricks videos are still my favorites (though I did quite enjoy the 'rants,' ride videos, and the round-tables with Mr Dyson too)! Hi Allen, thank you so much for that affirmation that this direction of the new chapter is the right one.. I think sometimes we do have to return to our roots, to re-boot and remind ourselves where we started and why we do it! Won't be doing any modifications, or changing anything from stock, unless it's a practical upgrade for efficiency and comfort... the style of an XJR is everything it already should be, can't gild the lily! Del, I recently purchased a 2000 year Honda GL1500 Goldwing with very low miles (12k) and I’m taking the same approach as you are with the Yamaha. I have refurbished the brake callipers added fresh brake fluid, changed engine and final drive oils, new air filter and spark plugs etc,etc…. The original tyres where dated 2009 and have been subsequently replaced with new Avon Cobra Chrome items. I have been re-watching your cam belt change video as this is the next (and final) job on my list. Just purchased a pair of Gates T275 replacement belts and will be swapping these over in the next few days. The GL1500 sits very nicely next to my GL1100 and Kawasaki Z1000. I understand that Goldwings are not to everyone’s taste but personally speaking I love them. Only negative with the GL1500 is the amount of plastic bodywork panels to remove to undertake any maintenance tasks, but to be honest, I can forgive the bike for that. Nice thing about the Wing is no chains and sprockets to worry about! Ride safe sir.

I'm in agreement with you, I absolutely love Goldwings and the bodywork thing does become less tiresome as you get used to it, you can even get the back wheel out without dismantling all the bodywork on the back as the whole lot lifts up on the two top hinge bolts as we showed in a video... quick and simple for servicing! Super pumped to see another build of yours coming down the pipeline your channel has become more of a show I watch now, so thankful that you choose to share your experience and knowledge with us and you do it so naturally that I can see this turning into an actual tv show that I would definitely watch, in having said all that where do recommend to buy part, both aftermarket and OEM I know if you did like a 5 minute segment on that we would all greatly appreciate it, for me in particular I’d love some Harley Davidson alternatives as our local dealer although beautiful has absolutely nothing ever in stock

We try not to recommend any single supplier of parts, but instead perhaps mention those we use from time to time, for particular given jobs... generally searching the internet for the best deals!
I am doing the same thing on my 1986 Honda 1100 Shadow, replacing tires, seals and clutch, lines, the guy put 60k miles on it, been pretty rough on it. I just got tires for it, getting ready to pull the wheels off. It's nice having a drive shaft, still solid. Now you showed rear fork play, which made me wonder how this plays. Gonna be fun watching your project. 😊

Awesome project! I totally agree with everything that you aim at. For me as an old bike rebuilding fan I always include fuel lines from jump. And guaranteed valve job because those umbrella seals are going to be a problem in the near future if not already. Also I might look at the air box and boots. Got my 1992 GTR running like brand new when I just believed in the original engineering. Tried the jets and mapping and this and that and in the mountains running like crap. Back to original and sealed airbox the snaps and pops and crackles are consistently the same as well as power regardless of altitude. And that was an expensive lesson. Rock on Dell.
Hi buddy, I think I agree with you there and have learned over many years, that when an engine's running sweet and smooth, just leave it alone and enjoy it... like you, I've dived in all enthusiastic, adjusting and replacing wear and tear items, only to find the bike doesn't run any better... perhaps it's because we feel the need to 'fiddle', or that we just do it because we can!... other than a valve clearance check and a good service, my budget's going to be focused on the clearly worn cycle parts! The only mechanic within 2.5 hours of me won’t work on bikes older than 20 years anymore….

I had a 2009 XJR1300 owned it for 7 years, like this bikes previous owner i used it to commute to work 5 days a week in all weather. It developed an electrical fault and the engine oil was always milky. Must of had it in 4 different garages 2 of them were Yamaha dealer's and none of them were able to fix it. Even had a new starter motor fitted, that changed nothing lol
as for the engine oil they all just put it down to condensation build up in the engine. Oh and the bike jolted forward when put into first gear and engine would cut out. One garage replaced the clutch plates and even that did nothing...
In the end i had to give it up, not something i ever wanted to do really.
Was lucky enough to pick up a brand new Honda CB1100rs back in 2020 before they were discontinued.
Only bought it because it was the closest thing to a Yamaha XJR1300
Really looking forward to watching this project, might give me an insight as to why mine couldnt be saved.
Sorry to hear all that mate, sounds like a right sorry saga and you obviously bought the RS to remind you of it.. I guess commuting in all weathers takes it out of the best of bikes, never does it any good... Thanks for sharing.

When I first came back from Oz in 2005 ( jeez it only seems like a yr ago), I nearly bought new Japanese large bike, my choices in the end were either the Yamaha 1300 like yours or the 1300 Suzuki Bandit,both excellent machines in my opinion. What a sweet ride!! I had a FJ1100 in 1984 and I can still see a lot of commonality between the two bikes. My next project will be something like this - not a concours restoration but a neglected gem that only needs a little attention. I wish we had those 1300's in Canada but we didn't get them. Shame. Can't wait to watch the progress on this one.
Hey buddy, thanks for your input, you're right it was a family bloodline of bikes that started right back in the 70's with the XS1100... truly the end of a legend when they finally discontinued air cooled bikes, damn those emmision regs aye?! I'm hearing repeatedly from our viewers in Canada and USA that you never got the XJR there, which is a true tragedy as they are an absolute staple of the factories and I think, a cornerstone of the motorcycle evolution!
@@Moonfleet41 Ha! Yep...regulations suck all the fun and joy out of motorcycling. There's a number of bikes like your XJR that we never got in Canada and a number of them from Japan - basically the smaller displacement inline 4 400's versions from the big 4. I might actually consider importing something - it's always nice to have something different/special.
Good choice Del. The XJR's sister, FJR has been a popular bike with European police forces. Also powering Legend race cars.

Hi there.. love this new project as a fellow XJR enthousiast. And after watching this video, the tires; I have the same problem on both my bikes (Indian FTR and an XJR 1200) and earlier bikes.. flattened rear (highway)tires but only the rear. How can I prevent that? Or is it less of a problem with touringtires like the Michelin Pilot Road?
Other than keeping your tyre pressures correct at all times, there's not a lot you can do if your mileage is all straight line... you could, perhaps, invest in the dual compound touring tyres at least which have the harder centre area to resist wear in the middle...
Nice timing. 😂 We retired our RP02 last year and tried to sell it. But at 110.000km there is very low response. Its worth so much more, than others are willing to give. Seeing your video just makes me think of keeping it. It is in better shape than yours, has the same mods (oil filter and shocks) and some others. I wonder if you'll get to oil consumption and pump pressure, as this is bothering me a bit. I'll start my own list and wait for your next vid. A word of honest criticism, you did not mention the biggest flaw: the aftermarket single exhaust can. 😂😂😂
Hi there, my word, that's impressive mileage, I've heard many people say they go over 100k, big lazy engines never wear that much! From observation, the headers of the exhaust are possibly a factory set as they have welded joints, not slip joints, and the can is fully baffled... so it works like a standard system plus, of course, saves a lot of weight, if that matters! Glad you're enjoying, plenty more to come.
my 2 first dream bikes when i was young were a Honda Interceptor 500 and an FJR1300. Nice to see the old girl get a second life. Were you considering the carbs and a valve maintenance as well? I'd bet with any amount of age and mileage the needle valves and the valve clearances are both potentially overdue or on the verge of needing it. Parts for both are cheap. Just stay away from All Ballz carb rebuild kits. The pilot jets are garbage. Some old fashioned reconditioning is good to get after!
Thanks mate, i mentioned in the vidoe that ill be getting into the motor for a good thorough service, valve clearances are always worth checking, the motor currently runs really sweet, so im not expecting any dramas there.. and thanks for the tip, ill steer clear ont he all balls then. !
@@Moonfleet41 sorry. Missed when you mentioned that about the motor. Another interesting little exercise is to do a compression check before and after the valve maintenance.
My ST1300 at 40,000 km was out of spec on 13 of the 16 valves so it’s always worth checking. If yours hasn’t been done and it’s higher mileage then my bet is the exhaust valves will most likely be tight on clearance.

Man, I like all of these UJMs. XJR1300, GSX1400, CB1300. And damn, big Hondas are still in production in Japan!
Yeah, the CB1100rs had the possibility of being the last great air cooled muscle bike out of all the factories... all the others are gone now.. but sadly they blew it.. strangled the power, made them gutless and denied the one reason for a muscle bike.. Grunt..! shame, so it means the three you mentioned, speciallt the air cooled one, will be the last of the legend.!

How about the brake lines, are they original ones. I'm dubious of the lines on my 2016 tracer. Handbooks say replace after 4 years. I replaced the ones on my fazer with braided ones. I suppose what I'm asking is, does it really need to be done. The brake feel on the fazer is solid but not the same on my tracer with original hoses, it's a bit squishy but they work. What's your take on the brake line upgrade bruv. Take care both of you and it's great to hear P.P again. Be well all.
Hi Ray, that's a natural upgrade these days, I think I'll have to do them, but being squishy isn't a measure of worn out brake hoses, that's just air in the system... inspect them closely in vulnerable areas that get weather, give them a little flex and observe any dry cracks that may be appearing, if you see even one mate, time's up, get some new ones... brakes is not something we can ever stint on, I'm gonna wait till the end of the project and see what money's left!

Fun project! I had an FJR 1300. Not sure if it’s the same engine but they are fast. What about spark plugs, fluids and filter. Not that expensive and I figured you’d do that right off the bat.

Hi Rick, you are thinking on the right lines there... because way back in the day, we were approached by someone from the Discovery Channel who first used to produce Wheeler Dealers before the mainstream Channels picked it up... and asked us to submit some videos for what they called 'The Turbo Hub', so for a short time our early content was actually rubing shoulders with Wheeler Dealers! I think it's something that they wanted to run alongside the car show, but in the end, they didn't pick up on it, which was a shame... but when you consider there's 100 cars on the road for every bike, I guess we'll always be niche! So I wonder. I saw a video on normal sized motorcycles replacing rims and tyres with Mini bike rims and tyres like from a Honda Grom's rims and tyres. What are the chances you might in the future try something like this out... I would love to see it done from go to whoah.... I get it if you aren't interested I just thought I'd suggest it as a different project that could be interesting. I would love to do it to one of my bikes but find myself not knowing how to start.... Hence the idea of asking you lol.
Hi mate, I've never seen such a thing or even heard of it, on balance it sounds a little sketchy to say the least, and quite possibly non-compliant on MOT, I can't imagine how you'd rig up the brakes, and there's the consideration of weight too ... this bike for instance is 1/4 ton and Groms weigh about as much as a bag of chips!... so probably not something I'd do, but an interesting concept all the same!

Im one of your most shocking viewers i have followed you for sometime . I watch and enjoy and this project is ideal getting it back to new. I even bought a tool chest but to my shame I am incapable of doing any maintenance as i fear the bike will be in bits and call someone out. I had a Triumph T100 when i first started watching and now a Kawasaki RS 900. So thank you for doing this i can watch and learn. My father was a good mechanic but unfortunately it skipped a generation when it came to me.
Thanks for sharing your story mate, it's great to hear you've made some tool investments, but a shame you don't get stuck in and enjoy the jobs... you mentioned it skipped a generation, but confirdence isn't inherited, I believe it's grown through practice... so many times we hear guys say they didn't realise it would be so easy... perhaps start with the simple stuff, like fitting a number plate, basic oil change, perhaps swop the air filter and before you know it, you're doing your own servicing! Go for it mate, what have you got to lose!
New project is always exciting, but this one will be more so, kinda back to basics. Love your channel mate.

Thats a long way off yet mate, not sure it's perticularly interesting to talk about money and costs as it all varies so much around the world, different currencies and all that.. but with the bike, i would like to enjoy it for a while once it's done before i decide whether to sell it or not..!

Yes they would indeed mate, I believe the seals are even available, but not sure about the springs themselves... gonna take it one step at a time!

Great video Del, you always remind me to consider the age and mileage, and seeing as I will soon hit 100,000 miles may be time to do the cables. I have experienced worn throttle cable once, and it is simple work to prevent that. Cheers!

Nice!!! theres an XJR1200 drag bike on market place at the moment I saw it racing a few weeks back would be super tempted if I didn't already have to many projects, Will certainly be following as its thanks to your viedos years ago that have helmped me do jobs on my Bandit.

How do you torque down bolts on the camshafts when they have oil on the threads. Before you can reach torque settings the bolts start to slip. Do you just get them to where they feel good? I have had this experience.

Love to see the new project... and to hear a voice from the past! The swing arm movement is scary to see, especially after you rode it home. Was that an issue when you had in buying it? I mean, if you had to trailer it, would it have been a deal breaker?

No I don't think so, I bought the bike as a project and knew it'd need a few things... and in some ways, discovering this is a great telltale that other bearings, although currently 'ok', probably won't have long to live so will be worth replacing also! Great project Del. Im going to watch closely. Im still working on my ‘02 Suzuki Bandit and Ive wondered what Items I should inspect on a 22 year old motorcycle.
I knew it was an XJR under there 💯 great bike and rides superbly, i had one but sold it, maybe in another 20/30 years again lol.

Thanks for sharing a great inspection video. Is that chain movement coming from the chain or the worn swing arm?
Thats in the chain, regardless of the chain loop lifting, in your hand you can feel how much the chain is pulling off the sprocket, and it shouldn't, there is significant wear on the set..!

Im all for stock parts when ever possible. BUT please get the tapered roller bearings for the steering stem. Stay away from the wagon wheel 1800's technology ball and race bike manufacturers used, and may still use, junk. Ive been away for awhile and am looking forward to this project of yours.

Still have the Switchback? Your videos on it helped me decide to look for one. Pick up a 2016 a couple of months ago. I am loving it.
Great to hear you're enjoying your bike, I did trade mine in in the end, I now have a M8 StreetBob, did enjoy the Switchback though, a great all round touring bike without the heavyweight sdrawbacks of a StreetGlide or Road King!
