    *Note that despite the Derwent inktense being ink based, they do resemble other watercolor pencils enough to be featured here (in my humble opinion and experience)*
    See how they compare to watercolor pencils Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer in this video : th-cam.com/video/aJUgo_Zc-XQ/w-d-xo.html

      Of course since they are a water based medium. Plus they work so similar to other watercolor pencils.

      @@renmuffett yes, and with this video I'll remember to be extra clear about it in the future as not everyone knows, plus now considering comparing water soluble pencils vs watercolor pencils with Caran d'Ache who has both. Also I just realized that in my country, the only term we use is "water soluble", for both types. The line can be so blurry in fact!

    That's how I started with watercolour.
    I had a few children's colouring and some good coloured pencils for kids. Then I bought Koh-I-Noor's Mondeluz and Derwent's Watercolour Collection 12 (3 watercolour pencils, 3 Inktense pencils and 3 Inktense blocks here) and started to work with them and at this point I drew what came to my mind - no tutorials and no references. Looked quite awful in my opinion but it was a good experience. And then I decided to buy White Nights watercolor and oh my it was a starter.
    That was 2,5 years ago and it was like a lightbulb moment that I can do anything else apart from reading and watching some TV shows and films. So now I also do cross stitching, play ukulele, sometimes do some crafts and ocassionally crochet - and it all started with watercolour pencils!😊

    I love this video. I know Inktense is ink, pretty sure most people do, but most people who use watercolor pencils already know that too. Anyway, I'd like to add that if you want to add layers and make it a better watercolor experience, even use actual paint in some areas, you can use clear gesso to add weight and tooth to the paper. Keep the coats thin and even, and make sure it's ABSOLUTELY DRY between coats and before coloring (blow dryers are your friends). You can sand it down lightly to even it out.
    Just a little tip if you want to add a lot of layers, especially with watercolor pencils rather than Inktense, because the bottom layers with watercolor pencils are activated when you wet them again, meaning you need more water. It also expands your choice of art because you can use it on the cheaper paper and still be able to use wet media.

    • @paintingandchocolate
      @paintingandchocolate  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Maureen, it sounds like there is a lot more to experiment with on coloring books! I've heard about the gesso trick but never tried it before (yet).

    • @pixiecolors
      @pixiecolors ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@paintingandchocolate try it! I use Art Basics clear gesso and lately I've been using Winsor and Newton Artists' Acrylic clear gesso. It's basically an acrylic medium that preps the substrate to give it weight and tooth. Acrylic painters have been using it forever on canvas but watercolorists have discovered it! 😆
      There's also watercolor ground, which will turn literally any substrate into a watercolor substrate. But it's not clear so it won't work for this. It's pretty amazing though.

    • @rozitasheilarahim8016
      @rozitasheilarahim8016 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pixiecolors Sorry to barge in. What you said interest me about using clear gesso. Other than using watercolour, I'm using lots of watercolour pencils for my painting too. After a few layers of wetting the coloured pencils, it's quite hard to layered it again and that's not even pressing pencils hard on paper. I always used hot press Archer paper for watercolour pencil. Thank you for your suggestion of using gesso. I will try it on my next painting. God bless you. 😇🤗

    • @pixiecolors
      @pixiecolors ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rozitasheilarahim8016 the gesso gives more texture, so not so much like hot press but cold press. I've never put it on hot press paper and I'm not sure if that's what you mean, it's an acrylic medium that adds texture and weight. I would suggest for watercolor pencils that you use cold press paper. It does eat up more pencil, but I usually use them for detail, and use regular paint for washes and glazes, as well as layering. Hope that's helpful.

    This is a great technique! I always wanted to learn watercolour painting, but it seemed so out of reach... I can draw, but it takes me so long that I figured I might never get to use the colours. This technique opens up a world of possibilities, because most people have already learned to use coloured pencils. Also, you have so much more control over the colours because you can apply the colour to the paper and then blend after. I have zero aspiration to become a watercolour artist, my goal is to design knitting patterns, but exploring other mediums is such a great way to expand your creativity and confidence. I will definitely give this a try.

For the background it makes sense to have some texture but I kind of freeze up when I'm about to attempt making it a smooth finish. I'll definitely check out the playlist! Also, I specifically bought the inktense because they look like watercolor but don't lift and are more vibrant than WCP and when you're using adult coloring books the less water the better. Great video & piece!

    Inktense is my FAVORITE way of doing backgrounds in coloring books that can handle the water. Because you don’t need a ton of water to activate them. PRO TIP: If you have a book/paper that you want to use Inktense or any water activated/soluble medium but are afraid the water won’t hold up well- try blending with a colorless blender alcohol marker! This works especially well with Inktense pencils. I would practice a bit first, try it out on a scrap piece of paper or a page from the back of the book that you won’t use. Experiment with it and don’t be afraid to layer more colors on top of each other, just make sure the first layer dries first. Use Inktense and blend with colorless blender marker and once it dries try painting something on top of it with acrylic paint. Like for a background you could do dark blues and purple Inktense and blended out kinda messily and then splatter some white acrylic paint on for stars. Make streaks of metallic watercolor over it for a space mist. Inktense are excellent and since they’re “supposed” to be permanent once they fully dry (in my experience they’re not fully permanent- they will always at least leave a stain but they all can be lifted at least a little bit with a dry paper towel) so you can layer all kinds of fun stuff over it. They make the best backgrounds for coloring pages or your own art. They work great in Kerby Rosanes books with an alcohol blender marker, Hanna Karlzon and Maria Trolle etc. have fun!

    Everybody's art is different. Everyone interprets colors, shapes through their eyes. Van Gogh interpreted colors and shapes differently. This is why its called art. Art is manifesting what you see and making it a reality. If I wanted a realistic picture I would take a picture on a camera. This is why art will last forever. Its time tested and unique and one of those things and gifts in life that can't really be explained. You have to experience it. Anyway, beautiful work.

    Work in layers. Do one light layer and blend colrs. Activate ink with a damp brush, cleaning brush between areas or colors. Let dry. Do next layer. When coloring is done, do hilights and other areas.
    You gave me a great deal of tips and procedures in the tutorial. Again, thank you.

    Your work is lovely and I like that you are interested in realism in watercolor. Its hard to find many here that are. I gave my intense pencils to my daughter since I learned that most of the pencils in my set were not very light fast. Some the lowest! Lightfastness is important to me since I've been a professional portrait watercolor artist for so long. I was teaching for a while also. Inktense is not classified as watercolor but the other watercolor pencils are. My daughter is more into ink art so she was thrilled! I'm retired now from commissions but still paint for family as gifts and lightfastness still matters for that. But for journaling I'm not picky. You are doing lovely work!

    • @paintingandchocolate
      @paintingandchocolate  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Renee, thank you so much for your lovely comment. It sounds awesome both you and your daughter create! Great point about lightfastness. I myself am not personally picky about it because I create mostly for experimenting and TH-cam, classes etc. As soon as I paint large scale for my house, for sure I'll check onto it so paintings don't fade. Lightfastness. Another good watercolor pencil/water soluble pencil topic idea for a video 👍

    Just love my Derwent inktense pencils
    Only discovered them going to replace my Derwent water colours pencils that got stolen .
    The inktense have a nice creamy but not to soft lead that is highly pigmented .
    I have never liked the Derwent water colour pencils that much as they are chalky to use and need more colour laided down .
    These are next level.
    If you are still using the old derwent water colours , just go to your art supplie and ask to compair the diffance between the both, they wont mind as they sell them individually for about $4 each.
    Im blown away by the amout of pigment in these.

      You're welcome! In some books with very thick paper markers will work but since they can come through the other side in a way watercolor pencils can't I'd be more cautious (they're already wet when pencils aren't).
