  • Bed sores are preventable injuries that plague our long-term care system. Also called pressure sores or decubitus ulcers, bed sores are painful wounds that develop due to unrelieved pressure.
If your loved one developed a bed sore inside a nursing home or a hospital, it is likely that this injury could have been prevented. Bed sores are prevented through offloading pressure. And offloading pressure is easy. An aide simply comes to the patient’s bedside and rolls the patient from side to the other. If a patient is unable reposition themselves in bed, offloading pressure is the legal responsibility of the nursing home or hospital where they reside. If a patient is immobile, the law requires that nurses come and reposition the patient every 2 hours in bed, and every 30 minutes in a wheelchair. Failure to reposition the immobilized patient will result in bed sores. This is obvious patient neglect.
