    So so happy to find you, sir! Female here 57yo. 4 months in the hell with sore throat ear pain in the clavicle problem with the breathing… i felt miserable, until i found you and found your video about sternocleidomastoid muscle, i did not know i have it in my neck:) went to neurologists they gave me anticonvulsants, went to kinesitherapiss , ostheopats…..none mention to me that might problems can come from those muscles… wish you a good health and thank you for sharing this info with us the sufferers

    Wonderful information. A physio I saw years ago also suggested changing the angles to find the tension spots. As a road cyclist doing work on the neck and upper back is very important to keep these areas limber and free of headaches. Thanks. 😊

    your videos are great, just did SCM one, and this one. thank you for explaining slowly, clearly and visually. A "lost art' on youtube. thank you. Have a terrible flare up of TMJ. Dentists in Boston (top school!) keep telling me to grab masseter. But upon a myofascial release massage yesterday, found the total fascia, scalenes, temporlas , lateral pterygoids, SCM, were on fire! OMG< i was only do 'what they told me'. Plus, i did acupuncture in morning with the MF release msg last night, and today for first time, i can move. But now: have bulges in temporalis. Will ckc out other videos, thank you (would love to get rid of the 'chipmunk temporalis bulge'.

    How do I know if it’s a knot or a tumor or something else? I have a lump about the size of my pinky going slight angle north south on my upper trap close to my neck. MRI shows 4 bulging discs 3 partially fused vertebrae with narrowing and straightening of the lodis. It somewhat tender but not super. I’m in pain lots of it. Norcos all day long, no relief, weakness, loss of motion, tingling all four limbs. Etc. Already been referred to surgery but told it could be months just to get a consult. But if it’s just knot …..

    Since the flexion stretch is not recommended, what would be the best way to stretch the cervical extensors then? I know that the flexion stretch helps stretch them but it is not safe to do that stretch itself.

      Good point Andy. The cervical extensors are made up of several different muscles all pointing in different directions. The key is not to do a pure flexion stretch. However if you angle your neck (some side bending + flexion) you will hit the extensors on one side, and then do it again on the other side. Also note that most people want to 'stretch' their muscles because it's easy to do and sometimes gives instant relief, although the pain may come back. For long term results, the BEST exercise is still strengthening. It's not going to give any immediate relief, but over several weeks, it's always been able to give superior results from stretching alone. The best is a combination of both, but strengthening is the better way to go. Hope that helps.

    What a strange advice. In Yoga, you have Sarvangasana, Halasana and the whole thread of exercises where the head is stretched in exactly that position you claim undesirable.
    I personally often feel the need to stretch in that way.
