      The 223/556 will leave a small sent. More like a crater. Won't deform the shape of the steel but will take a small chip out. For 25 dollars I think it would be worth it to use as a 233 target. Won't last forever though.

    Well 1/4 inch AR500 is really rated for handguns, there a chart out there that lists what thickness of AR500 you need for what caliber. I have seen 3/4 inch AR500 that was rated for 50 caliber but you have to fire at the target at the correct distance so it has slowed down enough before impact. Still a great video it helps folks understand what is going on.

    At about the 2 min mark, you were talking about safe shooting at steel. My experience, is if it is a lead core with a copper jacket, straight on to the target steel at 25 feet is more than enough to be safe, especially with the target suspended like you have it from above. the impact will cause the target to move away from the direction of energy (you) and cause the fragmentation to go into the ground. Yes there will be spall going upward, but that will simply rain don from gravity.
    I have shot 10's of thousands of rounds of jacketed lead, (standard ball stuff) at steel and never have I encountered any issues with stuff flying back at me. Disclaimer; my set up was similar, but I used a "Sheppard's hook" to hold the target. In my minds eye, that is so similar to hanging it with rope, but more durable.

    This was actually about the integrity of the 1/4 in 500 walmart plate. I feel it stood up rather well. A few dents don't hurt. Still would last quite a number of hits over time. Just a nice simple target. Can of spray paint makes it like new again.

  • @Breezio69

    I know this will get lost in the comments but if you want to hang a plate that wont swing badly when you're shooting it. Get a semi truck mud flap and cut it in strips as wide as your steel targets. Bolt the targets to the mud flap and then screw the mud flap into your stand (I use cheap 2x4 saw horses). Works like a charm and can get hit with thousands of misses before they even look like there are holes in it.

    The rifle rounds making dents in this target, has NOTHING to do with it being from Walmart. lol It's simply too thin, for high velocity cartridges. 1/4" AR500 pretty much ends at pistol rounds. 3/8" AR 500 is fine for non-magnum rifle rounds, 50 yards, and out. Buy the 1/2" AR500 for anything "closer", or anything above 2,900 fps. For those of you that shoot AR 15's, 3/8" ar500 steel is the bare MINIMUM, from 50 yards(55g fmj, 16" bbl). Hope this helps with any confusion...

      120 years of developing the optimal bullet for the velocity, and no real need to compromise design to handle wide variances in velocity at impact. Same with the 45-70, a bit of arc, and no scorcher, but what a wallop on target.

      Ralph Reagan The 30-30 has probably taken more deer in north america than any other cartridge. It is a fantastic caliber for thick woods where shots are rarely over 100 yards. It gets trash talked because everything is now marketed towards magnum calibers and the newest latest and greatest. The old cartridges that are still around are still here for a reason. They work!

    Earlier this month at the Indiana State Cowboy Shoot, there were birds that kept trying to perch on top of the steel targets on the rifle range. Spalling from a 45-70 cut one of the birds in half. That was at somewhere around 300 yards. A 45 Colt managed to do a bit more damage... But that was on a direct hit at 100 yards. Splat.

      I use wd40 as a solvent, motor oil as an oil, and high heat bearing grease for rails/bolts. Cheap, extremely effective, and all my guns work... very well actually... thinner lubricants like rem oil (cleaner only, do NOT use as a primary lube, wears too fast and evaporates) and Hoppes just runs and doesn't stay where you need it to. Any grease will work, but for ars there is a lot of heat so bearing grease I’ve found to work best. And any rail, because it stays in place. Motor oil is plentiful and inexpensive, and is thicker so it doesn’t run as bad and doesn’t evaporate. Just my two cents

    I actually bought this same one on accident instead of the 3/8ths. ( Shooting .223 / 5.56 ) Honestly i know you aren't supposed to shoot 1/4th with rifles but at 100-110 yards it has held up for over 4 outings to the rock pits. The only time it gets damaged is if you hit the very edge of it. Obviously it will wear faster than the 3/8ths but i think it is okay for an accidental one time purchase

    • @mrvolts9262

    It is fun to watch you have fun! Need to get a 300 Win Mag and break the bank (again). You should get with Patreon so folks can help support your channel. You could count me in. Please don't go the business route become commercial and lose your independence. There are very few gun channels left who aren't beholding to a company, an organization, or a manufacturer just like a bunch of politicians. Most of the big guys aren't worth watching anymore because they are all trying to sell you something. I like and would support your channel because it is honest. Try to stay that way because fame can become a very slippery slope.

  • @HunterMarshall10
    @HunterMarshall10 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shooting steel is all about fps and ft/lbs of energy at the time of impact. That's pretty much what the directions on the package outline. 30-30's, 12 ga slugs, 450 bushmaster...Yes they all use heavy bullets but they are traveling much slower than ,magnum rifles and therefore do not penetrate the steel. To use magnum cartridges like the 300 win mag you just have to shoot from a far enough distance that the bullet velocity and energy on impact are within what is outlined in the target specs. Good video, I think the Wal-mart AR 500 steel looks to be pretty durable.
