    Hi! I'm a bit under the weather and I've been binge watching your videos. I just wanted to say that I think you're wonderful! I love that you leave the mistakes (learning experiences) in the video. I was watching one yesterday when you stopped and grabbed another scissor for a different fabric and it made me giggle because you sounded just like my mom and her different scissors for her different materials. I've come to a few conclusions while watching your videos.
    1. I'm thoroughly disappointed that we don't wear hats here in the U.S.
    2. I adore you and your crafting skills. I really love how you show the different household items that you can use while getting started so beginners don't have to spend a fortune.
    3. You've made being sick a little easier. I've had a lot of fun watching the videos and I do hope you keep going!
    A big thank you from Georgia, USA!

    I think that was great. I can see the urge to go and buy all sorts of things but am restraining myself as you have shown that quite a few household things can be used to block on and I think I am going to try with the placemats to start with to see how I get on. I will buy some neutral coloured Petersham because in my experiments using wire and heavy fusible interface, I think the edges of the brim etc are where you can really mess up so I will make one from those straw placemats (or two) and see how it turns out as I think you can manipulate those things pretty easily. I will let you know though!

      Yes do keep in touch with how things go, it is best as you mention, to use products that are easily found, and not too expensive when starting out. It gives a feel for the art of hat making

    Really informative video. I'm wanting to make an early 1920s wide brim style hat and I was a little overwhelmed with all the options. But you set out all the different fabrics nice and clearly. Any tips for DIY blocks for making one off wide brim hats.

    • @SHMillinery
      @SHMillinery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hiya, if you want to do a brim, but best suggestion is to look for a large shallow platter or bowl (any type) in either charity or thrift shops, or other peoples cupboards :) Any shallow bowl upside down will work if it is roughly the size you want

    Wow thanks for the lovely video! My husband and I do Edwardian costuming and love hats :) We have gone and taken classes from our local milliner but there has always been a bit of a gap in trying to figure out what I would need to prepare to make my own from here. This talk was great! The block bit especially. So does it matter if say I have a huge head? is a 22" block still the best one? or should we get one based on our head size?

    • @SHMillinery
      @SHMillinery  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. If you are making the hats just for yourselves, then get them in your head size. If you are making them for others then an average size is better, as you can make a block bigger (tutorial on this coming soon) but you can't make smaller. Hope this helps 😀

    I wonder if you could help. I suspect my question might be daft, but here goes. I bought a pillbox hat block from Hat Blocks Direct. Approximately half an inch from the bottom, there is a deep ridge that stretches around the block. Could you tell me what this is for? I have had my first attempt at buckram and I.... Oh, you don't want to know 😂. If you could explain the ridge and how you cover with it, I would be ever so grateful 🎉

    • @SHMillinery
      @SHMillinery  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @kerryhorwitz4093 the ridge is a string groove. When blocking it allows you to tie the string around tightly without it slipping. Buckram doesn't work well blocked in one piece for some shapes. I make a pillbox here with Buckram th-cam.com/video/FRb2tx6SmFo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=oEFUd5csHnV45QKU.

    How can one enlarge a crown block?

    • @SHMillinery
      @SHMillinery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only way to make it bigger is to block a felt or paper(toyo) or straw hood over it, till you get the size you want, then cover it, and block your main materials on top
