I met John Boyd over twenty years ago when I was in London. We were doing a Princess Diana exhibit here in the US for charity. We met with Diana's designers to get insight into her clothing, hats etc. John Boyd was the sweetest man. He sat and talked with us about Diana, how shy, young and innocent she was when he first started doing hats for her. I really enjoyed my visit with him and cherish the picture I have with him outside of his shop. Good memories.

This was so nostalgic for me as my late mother, who worked so hard for my sisters and I, was a milliner here in Cape Town, South Africa in the late 50's, 60's and early 70's. The owner of the hat shop was a Miss Rieck and the shop was called Marlene's. I remember as a young child been taken to see where she worked. There was a clear distinction between the show room and the work room across the passage. When you went into the work room of Sarah's shop it was all so familiar, with the blocks and the haberdashery drawers. I could almost smell the steam from blocking felt hats. Sadly my Mom died at age 53. I must admit I shed a few tears today watching this video on Mother's Day but it is good to know that millinery is still going strong. Thank you.

Never having been trained in Millinery ( I design and sew clothing as well as do embroidery and knitting) I have always wanted to try using a block and having a go. However a few years ago I was going to a 40's themed wedding and a hat was obligatory. I combed the charity shops to no avail, none of the styles were right or the colours ( my dress was duck egg blue and brown, made from a vintage pattern and 1940's cloth) . One day in desperation I picked up a straw hat for 50p that had the right shape of crown but the brim was the wrong colour. I chopped off the brim and bound the raw edge., then using pheasant feathers found in my garden along with felt flowers I trimmed the hat and it turned out perfectly. I checked photos from the era to make sure I had the style right. So many people commented on my outfit . My idea of heaven would be to work for a while in a shop like John Boyd and I am very envious of you getting to go there and interview Sarah Marshall.x

You looked so lovely in your green little hat interviewing Ms. Marshall. I'm a newspaperman's daughter and I learnt a lot from my father about how to interview and making reports. From me you get an A+ for this report. I at least enjoyed the video immensely. I loved all the hats she put on you and you looked great, even in the really fluffy one. My favorite on you were that green little number. I don't know if you can rent hat blocks, but if can maybe you could 🙃and make a very similar one for your own studio😊. I still have my mothers hats from the 50s and 60s. I wish I could find someone who would appreciate them. Sadly, many women especially in the US no longer care how they look. today's look is all about looking sexy and powerful. Sexy and powerful are an oxymoron. Looking like you care about your appearance and are worthy of respect is what gains you power as a woman. As they say,s__ sells, but if you can't be respectable and respected you have a very short shelflife.

Hello! Great question! I don't think there is a single specific museum, but sometimes these hats will be donated to various fashion museums around the UK. A lot of Queen Elizabeth 2 hats are probably looked after by the "Royal Collection Trust". We also have the "Victoria & Albert" museum, "Fashion Museum Bath", "Historic Royal Palaces" and other institutions where items get donated and collected.
