  • r beny is the alias of Austin Cairns, a Bay Area producer who used to play in industrial post-rock bands and took up modular synthesis after become frustrated with the guitar. As he explored his instrument, he started a TH-cam channel to document his journey and has released several albums under the alias.
    In this video, r beny records a serene 12-minute ambient tracks using his Eurorack modular system, Novation Summit polysynth and Tasty Chips GR-1 granular synthesiser. You can find his music on Bandcamp and buy his latest release Seafoam & Dust, a collection of his first four LPs, via the dauw label.

    Patch notes/signal flow notes: Sound sources are Novation Summit, Tasty Chips GR-1, and Mutable Instruments Rings. Summit is also sending MIDI data to the Squarp Hermod, which is sending MIDI to GR-1 and CV to Rings inside the eurorack. The sound sources are routed to the A&H mixer where I'm using the sends/alt outs to send to fx/sound modifiers. Sound modifiers are Ciat Lonbarde Cocoquantus (the wooden box) running through Elektron Analog Heat, Oto Bam, the Eurorack case, and a Marantz PMD-420 cassette recorder. The eurorack patch is pretty simple/nothing special. It's just set up to send the input signal to the various effects/loopers I have in the rack (Mutable Instruments Clouds, Strymon Magneto, Make Noise Morphagene, Tasty Chips ECR-1. Modulation from Mutable Instruments Tides, Stages, and Marbles (can't remember if I used all of them).

      moveable hermod box is still a huge idea. Austin, could you explain a bit more detail about the oto + heat + marantz combo? i'mean what does what: i can hear pulsating, compressed distorsion top layer, tape-ish wow & flutter. I'm sooo curious how does this sound without the end process

    • @rbeny
      @rbeny 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@iamyankchannel so the oto, heat, marantz combo are running in parallel into their own channels on the mixer, as opposed to in a series. that way I could send one effect to another via the sends if I wanted to. the oto provides reverb. it's pretty subtle here, I mostly just use it to enhance the stereo field a bit. I love that it can be so transparent. the heat is actually only hooked up to the cocoquantus (the wooden box). it's being used to filter/shape the sound of the coco a bit. the cocoquantus can be a bit unruly and noisy. usually I put heat at the end of the entire single chain (after the mixer), but didn't here as this setup is a little more unconventional for me (usually stick to just one or two instruments at a time).
      for the marantz, I'm essentially treating it as an effect. it allows you to monitor the tape as it's being recorded to, so if you use a crinkly, beat-up old tape loop, you get that lovely cassette loop effect in real-time on the input (as opposed to being limited to looping). that might be a lot of the wow&flutter and dropouts and tape sounds you hear here. I pretty much run the summit and gr-1 through the marantz the entire time.

      Do you use the usb out from the Zed mixer into the computer for recording or do you have it routed to an audio interface?

    As the twelve minutes passed I began to feel lonely, more lonely than I have ever felt before, yearning for the person that could no longer walk through the door, the person I once saw in my dreams and who I hoped I would grow old with. Now there are no dreams of them, no fantastical visions of the lives we dreamed of, now they only exist in memories are warping like tape in the sun.
    Thank you r Beny for this beautiful piece

    I really wish I could get into ambient modular music like this. When I first heard r beny it was like hearing what my mind thought up this whole time and I never was able to produce. Then I found out how expensive this is. Plus r beny is extremely talented, trying to get into this and expecting to get anything like this out of it is just foolish.

    Not sure why this is called 'patch notes' which would suggest some annotation or at least indication of the process. I love r beny and the piece is brilliant of course, and it might be impossible to describe the work flow, but then Fact should give it a different title.

    Can someone break down the gear he is using? I'm interested especially in the modular rack. Thanks! Great music!

    • @doctormoc
      @doctormoc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The top row is mostly Mutable Instruments (3 x Rings, Stages, Marbles, Clouds). Bottom row is ER-301, Make Noise Morphagene, Strymon Magneto, and some kind of norns thing maybe. Little box on top of eurorack case is a Squarp sequencer. The range of possibilities with that gear is practically limitless, it's very difficult to say what's going on other than 'complex sound sources and effects under complex modulation' :)

    How does one learn the modular synths? Someone who has absolutely ZERO synth experience or knowledge of terminology whatsoever. Absolute RAW scratch. Lol. Should that person start off on software such as Ableton or Renoise?

    • @ScottofOakland
      @ScottofOakland 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There's a free modular software called VCV Rack that has the basics of modular synthesis and is a great way to get started!

    • @OIP_1
      @OIP_1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      dada402 vcv rack! however if you don’t have experience with synths already i’d suggest looking up some tutorials to get an idea of how the signal flow works. the mutable modules tend to combine a few building blocks in one, might be easier to learn with basic analog style voices first

    • @TheMrJjjaaammmeeesss
      @TheMrJjjaaammmeeesss 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Search 'learning modular' it's a great channel of tutorials by a great teacher.

    • @YTNUKLR
      @YTNUKLR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely VCV! I am one who knew zero, bought a lot of expensive modules, did nothing with them. Got into vcv, sold a ton of my modular hardware and learned more for basically free in vcv. Still into hardware modules, more than ever in fact, but I can juice them for more now that I get it. Also, if you want to have a matrix router and multiple quadrature LFOs modulating a bank of Plaits & Clouds, you can [Audible Instruments package-free]. Musical ideas that involve buying $2000 worth of modules you can just patch up. Polyphonic? No problem! Super inspiring and in many ways encourages you to do crazy crazy stuff. Once you see what you can do in VCV, make a decision *then* what you want to get for hardware, how much the computer is integrated into your workflow, etc. The only thing you buy is a keystep. maybe a valhalla Vintage verb plugin.
