Patch Notes: Ela Minus

- Ela Minus is a musician from Bogotá, Colombia who exclusively uses hardware synthesizers to perform, write and record her techno-inspired pop songs.
Her love affair with synths doesn’t stop at music-making: she studied synthesis and learned how to design and build instruments for herself, which led her to work at boutique New York synth company, Critter & Guitari.
Earlier this year, Ela signed to Domino Records, which releases her debut album Acts of Rebellion next month. In advance of its release, Ela has filmed an experimental set for our Patch Notes series at her studio in Bogotá.
“I recently moved and my studio is not set up yet so I just took my live setup out of the case and onto a table for this,” she says. “I used exactly what I use live except for the Juno 60 and the Septavox. I wanted to play my songs but make something a bit different; so I did not sing and just played around using some of the sequences of the songs and improvised a bit with them.”
Acts of Rebellion is released on October 23.

As an engineer I can tell you that tape is standard equipment
Look on any large mixing consoles being used and there will be some, some desks even have areas to right on with rub off pens :)

So nice to see the artists expressions, even though I hardly understand what they are doing. But it is indeed a performance and not just launching some loops. I love this type of gradual smooth transitions.

Awesome! Had me dancing round the kitchen! Some flashbacks to old-school Yello and Art of Noise near the beginning. And then it transitions to something much more modern. Love it!

I'd been watching something else in the background for inspiration as I set out a pedalboard and then went back to reading my book, TH-cam carried on. I sat hearing this on headphones for a while not knowing what it was then picking up the vibe decided I should take a look. Glad I did. Good to see hardware making a comeback. A much more stable way to work without the fear of software glitches and for shear tactical response. Also a darn sight more interesting to watch than DAW presentations. A bugger to lug around but still... Pink sticky tapes rules! Keep it up! Feeling the groove here in London.

This is one of my favorite performances by ela minus. Wish I had the chance to see them in person. Its interesting between this and the kexp version you can hear so many of the textures in these peices. I like this one for the reverb and the clarity for the high end. The kexp version really exemplifies the dark side of this worl show cased in the original mixes, but there is just something about live performances that are really unique.

I love seeing all the notes and hieroglyphs she's added in red tape to help setup and breakdown her equipment. Often times when I experience art that moves me I enjoy letting my mind drift and imagine the moments before and after the actual focal points or performance.
Also she makes the clap on that Rytm sound great with some smart trig locks. Schnoice.
Man or female, anybody who can play live music with so many devices in this way is a genius, talent, finger artist, superhero.
