How to tune a Rover SD1's V8 engine reasonably well enough given imperfect circumstances

  • With the battery charging light still on when the car starts, my thoughts turned to a low engine speed. I'd tuned the V8 in the summer after fixing the the FASD plus other minor work (e.g. fuel filter, timing, cleaning vacuum ports and so on) and it was fine, if ticking over a little on the slow side. Unfortunately, I didn't really make much of a difference but if you're interested in how such a car is tuned, here's a video.
Oh - and without giving away the ending, I have made some really good progress since but if you have any tips, they would still be welcome!
Edit: uploaded a second time to correct the orientation of one of the segments

Of course, playing it back, I see that the engine timing should be done at 600rpm, which means fiddling with the carbs. I'll have another go once I've sorted sorted a few more bits and pieces out.

Thank you very much for showing this. I am about to bring my 84 VDP out af storage and start it for the first time in 29 years. It has the same setup with the two Strombergs and FASD. The last thing I am a little nervous about . Kind regards from Denmark.

It works very well as an auto choke and I can’t fathom why people replace the carbs to do away with it. I may make a video on taking the FASD apart as I had to do this on mine as it was stuck open. I suspect that this had happened because the coolant hoses were on the wrong ports and leaked into the spring and plunger. Once the spring was replaced, it worked a treat.
Happy to advise if you need help.

@@stevesrover A video on taking the FASD apart would be nice, since information on this is sparse. Are spareparts available?

@@poulgammelgaard8868 Rimmer Bros sell a gasket but complete units aren't available. Mine was rebuilt using a spare that was sold on eBay (with a set of Strombergs!). The spare was frozen solid but I just needed the spring and plunger.

Hi there! is it possible to find workshop manual for this engine somewhere online? I've got myself v8 stripped out from JBA kitcar, and want to revive it near future. I've already rebuilt carbs so there is some work to do with engine itself, i assume, before first startup attempts. Thanks in advance!

I don't know about online. I have a workshop manual for my car and they come up on eBay from time to time. I guess any car that had a Rover V8 in it might do, although knowing where the engine came from would help choose the right manual.
Other TH-camrs such as Nitrosilvia and Church House Classics have many videos on the RV8.

Thank you for making this. Should be helpful when doing the engine on my Vanden Plas. I love the colour of your dashboard, is that original? Also where on earth did you get that brilliant multimeter?!

Glad it was helpful and there would be more of these videos coming! What's your carb setup as I know a lot now about the engine, the Strombergs and the FASD especially. And I've helped out a mate with the later SUs with stepper motors.
Yes, the blue dash is completely original and it's funny because when I bought the car, I kind of wished it was a more modern colour but as the years have gone on it, I've grown to really appreciate a blue interior - perhaps even love it. It feels so right for the car! Cars really need seats like the SD1. They are so comfy.
The multimeter came from Amazon. It's pretty good and well made, I must say. I like the big magnet on the back, which sticks to the car and it comes with many different probes and alligator clips. There is one function that it can't do, although that escapes me right now (measure resistance or amperage or something). I think it's do with parasitic drains, where the device has to be placed in the circuit itself. Anyway, I have another multimeter for that!

@@stevesrover Thanks Steve, my car is an '86 Vanden Plas so it has the somewhat tempremental Lucas EFi system. I am still on the lookout for a workshop manual that covers this specifically. Interestingly my car was owned by my neighbour who left it outside my house for six years (due to ill health) until it was eventually towed by the council. I rescued it from the scrap auction and will be restoring it on my channel over the next few months. It's one of the last cars built and is in Zircon Blue. There's a photo on my channel homepage.

Good work on rescuing the car! They are quite special, in my view. I find mine is pretty reliable, with only one breakdown in five years, but it's important to work on anything suspect before it becomes a problem. I find my subsequent tinkering and taking time figuring out what to do causes me to have to use my sensible car.
Workshop manuals come up on eBay from time to time and will include everything you need to know about the EFi. It'll also include all of the other models but that's not a bad thing.

@@Rust_in_Time the efi is ok but time will not have been kind it's individual components.
