Before this V8 was a Rover engine, it was a Buick engine, and still retains the BOP bellhousing pattern for transmissions. Transplanting a 5.7 Olds diesel...rebuilt with ARP studs and fasteners and NO torque to yield "stretch" bolts to insure reliability... would make a cheap but efficient powerplant ideal for a 4x4.

You only need shims if they're out (my TVR engine has no shims under the pedestals), but you're right he didn't check them. It's one of those weird ones. It's not "correct" to ignore it, but a lot of people do, and get away with it. Also the official engine manual from Rover doesn't mention even checking the preload, and if you use shims to do it rather than fitting (expensive) adjustable pushrods, you will never get all 16 right anyway.

How does fitting something to increase flow improve performance on an engine with a worn cam which by virtue of low lift and shorter duration is not flowing sufficiently in the first place? it won't make a bit of difference and would almost certainly cause bogging and pooling in the manifold. Anyway that 2 barrel Holley is enough for that low compression 3.5 litre, with the less than ideal ports these heads have, not to mention that that Edelbrock manifold and the factory bog iron exhaust manifolds are dire, I would be more concerned with getting the fundamentals correct first. I ran a 390 4 barrel with vac secondaries on a 3.9 litre,10.1:1 cr RV8 with big valve heads, cam, manifolds etc. For years,it was more than adequate.
