  • In this video I demonstrate the 4 crunchy amp models with a “flat” even tone configuration, the default tone configuration and my own custom configuration for each amp with both a strat and a les Paul on 3 pick up positions each. The goal is to give the viewer a sense of the differences between the four amps, two of which are based on Marshall amps and two of which are based on Fender amps. But I assure you they have very different sounds! Enjoy!

There can be big differences based on guitars and your pickups, as we all know. That’s why I find these vids so interesting. Illustrates it very well. With my Epiphone Les Paul Classic, I find I have to cut the bass a lot, cut the mids a little, and up the treble a little. That seems to be a good starting point for me dialing in a good tone.

Clear differences from when you just swap guitars. This is basically the reason why some guitars just sound good with certain amps. A strat will sounds great through a fender or marshal amp in the neck position but when you go to the bridge pickup you’ll notice big difference between that single coil Strat and humbucker in the LP. A lot more break with a humbucker but If you dial that volume back a little it will clean up and your overall tone will have more clarity. To compensate you might have to boost your treble on the amp with an LP. My spark arrived a few days and it’s definitely a blast to play.

Beantown Twanger 100%! Same reason that LPs tend to have more sustain. Thanks for your thoughts! Next time I’ll customize the tone based on the LP!

I think this video demonstrates how difficult it is to get a rich, edge-of-breakup tone on a modeler when using a Les Paul. High gain metal tones are a lot easier.

Tanks for your videos Andy. JOC how have you set the tone/volume controls on your guitars?

I’m getting the feeling that you will enjoy the Spark much more if you own a Strat. With a Les Paul only some of the amps sound ok and most only with the bridge pickup.

That may be my fault. I create these configurations with my Strat, but then I use the same settings with my Les Paul (to show how different they sound with different guitars). I should probably do a better job communicating that. Maybe next time I will create the custom configuration using the LP. The strat will likely sound pretty weak with those settings. Thank you for noticing the difference and mentioning it though!
