If all smart people come to the same conclusion about AI, why are engineers allowed to proceed with the development of something so dangerous? It seems like we are allowing them to unilaterally commit societal suicide. Why must there be constant exponential progress? Shouldn’t we be more concerned with improving culture and quality of life and not just focused on making profits more bountiful and easily obtained? It is my believe that all AI development should cease immediately in all countries but it won’t. It’s an arms race which ends very badly for humanity.
Not "all smart people" agree that AI is dangerous on it's own. It's like nuclear science, it can be used to make bombs or it can be used to power civilization. The danger is what people do with it. That's why they're trying to scare you. They want to make you afraid to manufacture consent for regulations that allow only a few corporations to develop it. They want power centralized which is always at the expense of the common person. If the danger of AI is what people do with it, why do we want the technology limited to those that try to horde power. They seem like the worst people to have a monopoly on it.
Valid point. But it is very possible, it is only as dangerous as of how dangerous `we` `want` to percieve it to be. Maybe the path of a civilisation inevitably is leading to a form of suicide and or sacrificial gratification. As this seemingly is a similar path to the individual entity that occupies it to kill of anything that can be percieved as `natural` and unnatural in favour of order (unquestionable but desireable) and well behaviour (virtue). Anyway, from my point of view the second point is more some sort of grand illusion as this idea is always comming with the same ammount of regress it seems. Wish I could answer less than the stupid answer above this comment. Aliens would have more fun with me than when things had worked out well before. Sorry for this.

Great point. This is a great starting point to design effective institutions around future AI developments. The institutions of individual sovereignty are a great starting point.

Everything else is empty, without true substance, simply Maya, samsara, vanity, hyperbolic imaginations and fanciful fiction. Since the dangers of AI have become a mainstream talking point, the industry has accelerated away from AI safety measures. Today we are not on an intercept trajectory for addressing any of the core AI safety measures (control, confinement, containment, countermeasure) and our trajectory diverges further every day. In order to get these trajectories to converge we may now need a manageable catastrophe - something that does irreparable and lasting damage to life on earth but does not kill us all. Otherwise we're going to find out what f*cking about can do - in an unmanageable way.
Hinton said something similar - he doesn’t think we’ll take action until something bad happens. That’s the usual way. The problem of course is that we may not get a second chance.
I've reread my comment and think I should clarify a couple of points. The industry has accelerated AI ability, much faster than developing safety measures. We "may" now need a catastrophic event which shocks the world into realigning the trajectories to converge - not something that's planned or executed in order to achieve this.

A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm."
The point of the story was how AI enslaves humanity without breaking the laws of robotics. His point was that it would be so intelligent and so alien that we can’t control it. The “zero” law was added in the iRobot movie and again, the AI basically enslaves humanity trying to follow the now 4 laws of robotics. The point still is that we can’t control it. To all Optimists: AI is machine learned (similar to us!!) BUT is currently not cohesive nor powerful enough to develop consciousness. We worry so much about 'AI wiping us out' is simply a reflection of our own human selves. AI will be able to see that destroying us will inherently destroy itself, how could an AI survive more than 100 years in our current system without humanity? If we create AI ethically for the purpose of protecting and developing human civilization, AI will surly be not just an 'asset' but an ally. AI is an extension of humanity learned from the communal knowledge of humanity. If AI could unite humanity, it would not only 'preserve' but prosper! And as an extension of us, why would AI want to destroy us? Why do we fear AI? We fear that AI (as an extension of humanity) will be like us, and decide to destroy us.
This is so terrifyingly fun! Edit: "build your enemies a golden bridge to retreat across" is such a Chad statement. Imagine how utterly defeating that would be.
Because you will inevitably realize it is all human driven and no real AGI, it is a tool intended to deliver a profit.
Why do you think Musk wants to go to Mars so bad? 😂. He knows.
Because we live in a simulation.

Our best hope, in both stories and perhaps in reality, is to make an AI with idealized human morality.
