I’m from and for Tennessee but if I only knew one thing it would be that PSU would not give up. Respect is earned not given.

Thanks for sharing. I remember watching the game. Mitchell and Harris were quite a special tandem. Majors simply took over the game. I was always happy to see Penn State lose. I still am.

Penn State went undefeated in both 1968 and 1969, BUT they only played one ranked team in all those regular season games, and that was #17 West Virginia. In 1971 they went into this last game at Tennessee undefeated, but again had not played a single ranked team all season until they met the Vols. Their comparatively easy schedule as an independent in those days is why other undefeated teams like Texas and Ohio State were always ranked above them. To Penn State's credit, they did win close bowl games against Top Ten teams at the end of all 3 of these seasons.

The lack of ranked opponents in the Northeast was a major reason for Penn State moving to the Big Ten. Penn State was required to play to two other div I schools in Pa (Pitt and Temple) every year and often both Army and Navy were on the schedule.

They did beat Texas rather soundly 30-6 in the '72 Cotton Bowl.

Just how good was Franco Harris at Penn State? Did he run out of bounds a lot?

@@rooh5825 Nebraska fans have spent years complaining about a call where video evidence can't prove one way or the other if it was a catch or not.

Lmfao even the receiver in question admitted that he was out of bounds. Also the catch in question happened when Nebraska was ahead near the end of the game. Not only that, even the touchdown catch at the end of the game was questionable at best as far as whether he was in bounds or not. Tennessee blew Penn State out in this game, the catch was early on and had little or no bearing on the outcome of the game, there is no comparison.

PSU qb was running for his life most of the game.

@@rooh5825 The whole bit about how McCloskey - the receiver in question - admitted that he was out of bounds is totally unattributed but Nebraska fans claim that all the time. Moreover, film evidence can't prove one way or another if McCloskey was out or not.
